Morocco falls 1–0 to Kenya in CHAN 2024 Group A match

The Atlas Lions suffered a 1–0 defeat to Kenya in the third round of Group A at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), held on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. Eager to secure all three points, the Moroccan side sought to take control from the outset, stringing together short passes to move closer to the Kenyan penalty area while maintaining strong ball possession. Their early efforts led to a free kick just outside the Kenyan box, resulting in a clear chance to break the deadlock in the 10th minute. National coach Tarik Sektioui was forced into an early substitution when Ayoub Mouloua left the pitch injured and was replaced by Youness El Kaabi in the 23rd minute. The Kenyan players responded with a few attempts that posed little threat to goalkeeper El Mehdi Al Harrar. Meanwhile, the Moroccans kept up the pressure, notably through Anas El Mahraoui in the 37th minute. Against the run of play, Kenya opened the scoring in the 42nd minute through Ryan Ogam, who capitalized on a scramble in front of Al Harrar's goal to slot a loose ball into the left side of the net. The Kenyan side was reduced to ten men after a foul on El Mahraoui prompted referee Vincent Kabore to show Chrispine Erambo a straight red card in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time (45+4'). After the break, Morocco pushed forward in search of an equalizer, with Youssef Mehri coming close in the 46th and 48th minutes. The Kenyans, however, became increasingly dangerous on the counter, threatening to double their lead. Seeking to turn the game around, Sektioui brought on Salaheddine Errahouli for Anas Bach and Oussama Lamlioui for Bouchaib Arrassi in the 61st minute. The changes injected more dynamism into the attack, with Sabir Bougrine (65') and Mohamed Moufid (66') both creating promising opportunities. Despite maintaining constant pressure on Kenya's defense and making repeated incursions into the penalty area, the Atlas Lions were unable to alter the scoreline. With one win from their two games, having sat out the second round, Morocco remains on three points and will face Zambia on Thursday at the same venue.

Achraf Hakimi: «I deserve the Ballon d'Or»

Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi has spoken about his hopes of winning the Ballon d'Or after a spectacular season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In an interview with Canal+ on Saturday, the player discussed a dream that could soon come true. «If I have the chance to win it, I think I deserve it too. After the historic season I've had—there aren't many players who have scored in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final, especially when it's harder as a defender. People think I'm a forward or a midfielder, but no, I play in a back four and I have to think about defending,» he said. Recalling his statistics for the year, Hakimi acknowledged that «they're not those of a normal defender». «I think that when a defender does that, he deserves it more than a forward,» he added. Speaking about his role with the Atlas Lions, Hakimi expressed pride in representing Morocco. «Morocco called me up when I was at Real Madrid's academy; it's my parents' country. I try to attend every call-up, to stay ready for everything, whenever the national team needs me,» he said. For Hakimi, «there are still many matches ahead and we're going to try to be ready for all of them». «It's a dream moment. It's the first time Morocco will host an AFCON. It's going to be magnificent! It's also a goal for me to achieve great things with Morocco. Our aim is to win this AFCON. It's a pressure we'll need to manage well, but we have to take responsibility.» Achraf Hakimi, the right-back for Morocco and PSG, is included for the first time in his career in the 30-player shortlist for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, which will be awarded on September 22. With PSG this year, he won the Champions League, Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions, and was a finalist at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Hakimi Stands Tall: 'Truth Will Come Out' in Rape Probe

Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi has publicly denied rape allegations against him nearly 18 months after the investigation began. Speaking to Canal+, the Moroccan international and 2025 Ballon d'Or nominee insisted on his innocence. 'I'm calm. But being falsely accused is horrible and unfair. I wouldn't wish it on anyone,' said Hakimi, who faces a potential trial over an incident dating back to February 2023 at his Boulogne-Billancourt home. The Nanterre prosecutor has requested Hakimi be tried before the Hauts-de-Seine criminal court, with the charges carrying up to 15 years in prison. However, Hakimi has maintained from the outset that the encounter was consensual and accused the complainant of attempted blackmail. 'I don't blame myself. People who know me understand who I am. I'm focusing on my family and football. I know the truth will come out,' he added. Recent revelations from L'Équipe show troubling messages from the complainant's phone suggesting a possible premeditated intent. The complainant admitted during questioning that she did not clearly express refusal, telling a psychologist: 'We kissed, I wanted it to end, but I didn't really make it clear.' Experts note Hakimi likely had no insight into her internal conflict. Hakimi's lawyer, Me Fanny Colin, criticised the prosecution's position as 'incomprehensible and senseless,' citing contradictions in the complainant's statements revealed by psychological reports. Meanwhile, Hakimi has emerged as a key figure in PSG's remarkable season, which saw the club win Ligue 1, the Champions League, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions. The right-back, who played 63 matches with 13 goals and 15 assists, was named among 30 Ballon d'Or nominees—a first for him. His PSG teammates Ousmane Dembélé, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Juan Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Désiré Doué also feature on the list. Other top contenders include Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah, and Erling Haaland. Tags: Achraf HakimiBallon D'orPSGRape case
