Poor England slump to second defeat by India in women's T20

A poor all-round performance from England saw India take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 series with a convincing 24-run win at Bristol, reports BBC.com.
England dominated the opening powerplay as India slipped to 31-3 - including Saturday's centurion Smriti Mandhana for 13 - but contributions of 63 apiece from Jemimah Rodrigues and Amanjot Kaur led a brilliant recovery to 181-4.
The pair added 93 for the fourth wicket as England lost control of the middle overs, before Richa Ghosh's unbeaten 32 boosted the innings at the death.
In reply, England's all-too-familiar batting frailties were exposed once again as they failed to recover from an early wobble to 17-3, eventually scrambling to 157-7 after Tammy Beaumont's 54 and a cameo of 35 from Sophie Ecclestone.
Openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley fell in the first two overs and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was caught at mid-on for 13, before Beaumont's counter-attacking knock kept England in the game with 106 needed from the final 10 overs.
But Beaumont's run-out in the 12th over shifted the game back in India's favour and Amy Jones - who added 70 for the fourth wicket with Beaumont - and Alice Capsey both followed shortly after in the 15th, dismissed by the left-arm spin of Shree Charani.
Ecclestone's 23-ball knock ensured England finished with some respectability but with many of the same mistakes repeated from the thrashing at Trent Bridge, the new leadership of Sciver-Brunt and Charlotte Edwards is being put to the test by a rapidly improving India who are building plenty of confidence going into their home 50-over World Cup in the autumn.
England are without Heather Knight's middle-order stability, but the repetitive manner of these defeats are a concern with the World Cup approaching and only three 50-over matches to come beforehand.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur: 'It was a good win for us. It's something special to see.
'We stay positive, see how many runs we can put on the board and see how our bowlers can contribute.
'It's a long time before the T20 World Cup. At the moment our main focus is on this series.'
ScorescColor:> India 181-4 (20 overs): A Kaur 63* (40), Rodrigues 63 (41); Bell 2-17
England 157-7 (20 overs): Beaumont 54 (35); Shree Charani 2-28. India won by 24 runs; lead series 2-0.

Pak coach Hesson stays firm: No Babar in Asia Cup Squad

Shahid Hashmi Pakistan's white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has rejected calls to include Babar Azam in the squad for the upcoming tri-series and Asia Cup, insisting that the former captain still needs to improve key aspects of his game. Sources told Telecom Asia Sport ( that the four-man selection panel — comprising Aaqib Javed, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Aleem Dar — had submitted a list of 20 names to Hesson. The list included Babar, following pressure from former greats such as Wasim Akram. However, under the terms of his contract, Hesson has the final say and the authority to trim the list to 17. He exercised that power by leaving out Babar. The omission was based on recent performances. Both Babar and fellow T20 discard Mohammad Rizwan were closely assessed during the recent three-match ODI series, their first under Hesson's tenure since he took charge in May. Babar scored 50 in one match but managed a duck and nine in the others, while Rizwan's scores of 53, 16 and 0 also failed to impress. According to sources, both batted too slowly, faced too many dot balls and were unable to convince Hesson of their readiness for a T20 comeback. Had they played with more aggression and higher strike rates, their cases for inclusion would have been stronger, insiders suggested. The latest snub effectively rules Babar and Rizwan out of Pakistan's T20 World Cup plans for February 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Hesson was clear in explaining his reasoning: 'There's no doubt Babar's been asked to improve in some areas around taking on spin and in terms of his strike rate. 'Those are things he's working really hard on. But at the moment, the players we have have done exceptionally well.' The coach added that Babar still has the opportunity to showcase his progress elsewhere. 'A player like Babar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and show he's improving in those areas in T20s. He's too good a player not to consider.' Hesson has made it clear since his appointment that selection will be based on form rather than past reputation. For Babar, the numbers tell a worrying story. • In ODIs, he has not scored a century in 29 innings since September 2023, when he made his 19th hundred against Nepal. His career average has dipped from 54 to 36. • In T20Is, his last century came in April 2023. Since then, he has gone 25 innings without a hundred, averaging just 31.5 compared with his career average of 40. For now, Pakistan will move forward without two of its most experienced batters. Hesson has put faith in players currently delivering results, while Babar and Rizwan face the challenge of rediscovering their best form in time to reignite their international careers. (

Former Australia captain and coach Bob Simpson passes away at 89

Agencies Melbourne Former Australia Test captain and coach Bob Simpson has died aged 89, reports BBC Sport. Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs - including 10 centuries - at an average of 46.81. He also took 71 wickets with his leg spin and was renowned as one of the best slip fielders in the game. After initially retiring from playing in 1968, Simpson made an extraordinary comeback as Test captain in 1978 at the age of 41, after several Australian players joined the breakaway World Series Cricket competition. 'Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket, and this is a sad day for anyone fortunate to have watched him play or who benefited from his wisdom,' said Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird. 'As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slip fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach. 'Bob's decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series Cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden generation of Australian cricket.' When Simpson took over as Australia coach in 1986, the side had not won a Test series for three years, but he oversaw a dramatic revival that saw them become one of the best teams of all time. A new-look team captained by Allan Border and featuring the likes of Steve Waugh and David Boon won the 1987 World Cup and secured Test series victories over England and West Indies. In the early 1990s, Simpson oversaw the introduction of players such as Mark Waugh, Shane Warne, Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Glenn McGrath and Ricky Ponting - setting the platform for an era of Australian dominance. After stepping down in 1996, he had short spells coaching Leicestershire, Lancashire and the Netherlands, as well as a consultancy role with India. 'Bob Simpson's extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations,' Australia's prime minister Anthony Albanese wrote on social media. 'As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest of standards for himself and the champions he led. He will be long remembered by the game he loved.'

Thomas Muller gets warm welcome from Whitecaps fans in Vancouver

dpa San Jose, California Former Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller received a warm reception from Vancouver Whitecaps fans as he touched down in Canada on Wednesday evening to begin the next chapter of his career. Müller, 35, was greeted at Vancouver International Airport by representatives of the Musqueam Indian Band, who welcomed him with a traditional drum march and a speech from Chief Wayne Sparrow. The 2014 World Cup winner was not given a contract extension at Bayern this year and left the club for which he won countless titles, including trebles in 2013 and 2020. He now has a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps that runs through the end of 2026. Müller signed his first autographs for supporters in the arrivals hall before heading upstairs to a sports bar, where fans were watching the first leg of the Canadian Championship semi-final against Forge FC. The competition's winner will be crowned Canadian champions. 'I am happy to be here, to be a Whitecap,' Müller told the crowd. 'We wanna create the future, but the game is still running so we have to support the guys.' The match ended 2-2, though Müller had departed in a dark van before the final whistle. The veteran forward is set to face the media for the first time as a Whitecap on Thursday and is expected to train with his new teammates the following day. Club officials expect him to make his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut at home against Houston Dynamo FC on Sunday. The MLS season, already in full swing since February, runs separately from the Canadian Championship, which is an annual tournament. MLS is the top-flight professional soccer league in the US and Canada, though it only features three Canadian sides.
