2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT review: Dancing with the desert dust in Hyundai's new electric off-roader

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT review: Dancing with the desert dust in Hyundai's new electric off-roader

Yahoo19-02-2025

Nowadays, "overlanding" is all the buzz in the car community. What began with kitted-up Toyota 4Runners and Land Rover Defenders spawned a whole slew of watered-down "soft-roaders" that distill the outdoorsy attitude of harder-core off-roaders into more daily-friendly packages, such as the Subaru Outback Wilderness and the Ford Bronco Sport. The claimed intent behind the rise of these adventure-focused models is for them to be used as practical and efficient crossovers during the week and as capable remote camping carriers on weekends.
Fully-electric off-roaders are nothing new, either. Consider the Rivian R1S, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV, and the upcoming Scout Traveler from Volkswagen. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT, however, takes on a more modest approach to electric off-roading, retaining the comfortable daily driver elements of the standard Ioniq 5 but adding a slew of upgrades to make off-road trips much easier–and plenty of fun.Admittedly, the thought of taking a fully electric vehicle on a remote, off-road accessible camping trip is slightly nerve-wracking. I mean, what happens if you don't have the necessary range to get back out of the bush? It's not as if you can bring a few spare jerry cans with you, just to be safe.
To offset these concerns, the Ioniq 5 XRT offers a respectable 259-mile all-electric range, meaning that you'll still need to be conscious about how far off the grid you travel, but it allows for plenty of exploration. I tend to think of the Ioniq 5 XRT as a more modest, real-world-focused alternative to the Ford Mustang Mach E Rally, which seems to be a bit excessive for what it will actually be used for.
What I mean by this is that the Mustang Mach E Rally is very clearly focused on off-road performance rather than adventurous capability. Although it benefits from about the same level of all-electric range, at 265 miles, the Mach E Rally touts figures of 480 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque – much more captivating numbers than the Ioniq 5 XRT's 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, at least on paper.
My issue with the Mach E Rally, however, is that if you're traversing lazily groomed off-road trails, 700 lb-ft of torque is almost entirely unnecessary. Sure, if you're thrashing it around a dirt race course, it's a different story entirely, but how often are buyers really going to be doing this? The Mach E Rally makes its performance intentions even more clear with its inclusion of Brembo brake calipers and a "Rallycross-tuned MagneRide Damping System." The Ioniq 5 XRT, however, gets more realistic, purpose-designed enhancements. The Mach E is slightly more expensive, too, with a starting MSRP of $58,995, compared to the Ioniq 5 XRT's $55,400 MSRP, although the Mach E does offer substantially more power for the money.

The Ioniq 5 XRT's upgrades over the standard model include a 23mm lift in suspension height, chunkier Continental all-terrain tires, exterior protective cladding with a pixelated, urban camo-esque texture that's happy to get bashed to bits by rocks and twigs, and an enhanced rear departure angle thanks to an upwards-angled rear bumper. Aesthetically, the XRT also benefits from steelie-look aluminum wheels and an embossed rear-end XRT logo.
Putting the Ioniq 5 XRT through its paces on an off-road challenge course in Coachella Valley, California, I was thoroughly surprised by the vehicle's ability to take a serious beating. Not only could the crossover handle it well, but its smooth suspension also soaks up every bump and slam, and its supreme build quality shone through without a single creak or squeak permeating my eardrums.
All of that meant that I was as comfortable as can be while driving over properly harsh terrain at much higher speeds than I would ever operate one at if my own name was on the registration.
When the terrain shifted from bumpy and rocky to a smoother, sandy course, I picked up speed with ease thanks to its plentiful 446 lb-ft of torque, set up the XRT-specific terrain mode to "sand", and pretended I was Walter Röhrl piloting an Audi Quattro Group B rally car. Incredibly, the Ioniq 5 XRT was light on its feet and playful, allowing for the occasional tail-swing, but became sticky as glue before things ever got out of hand, without cutting power entirely.Switch to snow mode, and its tires get even stickier. Its wheels refuse to spin at all, even if you try really hard, and its throttle response becomes far more gradual and calculated rather than sudden and abrupt, which prevents it from becoming stuck.
In fact, as hard as every driver tried to get the Ioniq 5 XRT stuck, not one of us found any success in our attempts. Though not quite as monstrously capable off-road as an electric G-Wagon, referring to the Ioniq 5 XRT as a "soft-roader" doesn't quite do its capability enough justice.
Overall, the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT presents an exciting opportunity to add a thrilling adrenaline rush to your next off-road adventure. If you're willing to take on the challenge of bringing a fully electric vehicle on an overland expedition but still require a vehicle that can tackle even the most strenuous daily duties, the Ioniq 5 XRT is a stellar option. Such capability and enjoyability, paired with Hyundai's build quality and the sublime platform that is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in general, is not to be ignored.
Are you a fan of the Ioniq 5 XRT's unique and flamboyant style, or do you prefer the Mustang Mach E Rally's 700 lb-ft of torque? Would you confidently explore tough, remote terrain in the all-electric Ioniq 5 N, or would you insist on a petrol-powered, purpose-built off-roader? This All-American EV Maker Is Charging Germany $3.5 Billion for Access to Its Tech

Rivian is a relatively young American company that builds electric vehicles. A key part of Rivian's business model is to sell its U.S. designed technology to others. In fact, Rivian has entered into a valuable partnership with Germany's Volkswagen. 10 stocks we like better than Rivian Automotive › Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) is a high-tech auto start-up that builds all-electric trucks and delivery vans. It has made a huge amount of progress with its business as it looks to become a sustainably profitable company. That said, it still has a long way to go before it gets to that point -- which is why the $3.5 billion it is charging Germany's Volkswagen for access to its tech is so important. Here's what you need to know. As noted, Rivian is a U.S. automaker focused on electric vehicles, or EVs. It has honed in on a niche within the industry, as it only makes trucks and delivery vehicles, which are basically just a different kind of truck. It has a prominent partnership with Amazon, which has used Rivian trucks to support its expanding delivery efforts. That is basically just a traditional customer relationship since Amazon is simply buying delivery vehicles. Still, the Amazon partnership has been very important. It provided Rivian with a reliable customer for its products at a time when it was just beginning to ramp up its production capabilities. It now has the capacity to produce around 50,000 EVs a year, which means it is running at scale. In fact, the effort in 2024 and 2025 has focused around streamlining production to improve profitability. Its factory produces both consumer vehicles and delivery vehicles, but the Amazon relationship was a huge help. And it highlights one of Rivian's key goals -- selling its products to other companies. In the case of Amazon, that was a more typical customer relationship, but Rivian's aspirations include selling its technology to other companies, too. This is where Germany's Volkswagen comes into the story. It has a long-term partnership with Rivian in which it is providing the upstart company with funding. Volkswagen has pumped cash into Rivian on multiple occasions as Rivian has continued to hit important development milestones. For example, Rivian "unlocked" $1 billion in cash from the German auto giant in the first quarter of 2025. That cash isn't expected to fully hit the balance sheet until the end of June 2025, but it will be an important infusion of funds as Rivian continues to invest in its business. To put a number on how important Volkswagen's capital infusion will be, Rivian burned through around $600 million in cash in 2025's first quarter. While Rivian has around $7 billion in cash on its balance sheet, that pile of money won't last long if it keeps spending like it has been. It needs to have a ready source of additional capital. Volkswagen is happy to provide that cash so long as Rivian keeps advancing its technology and business. Assuming Rivian remains on track, there's another $2.5 billion available from the German car maker. Coupled with expectations for loans of up to $6.6 billion from the U.S. government, Rivian should have ample capital to keep spending on its business for years to come. But the Volkswagen deal isn't just about the cash since Rivian is basically fostering a relationship with a company that could become a core, long-term technology customer as well. To be fair, Volkswagen isn't doing anything out of the kindness of its heart. It likely has high hopes for the technology in which it is investing. But that's the point for Rivian, too. It has high hopes that it develops a customer relationship that will help it become a sustainably profitable, and perhaps even growing, company. And that's all built on Rivian's U.S.-built innovation. The stock isn't risk free, so only more aggressive investors will likely find Rivian attractive. But given the success it has achieved and the partners it has lined up, it looks like this upstart EV company could have a very bright future over the long term. Hemi V8 Returns To 2026 Ram 1500 Lineup Following Consumer Demand

Stellantis brands Dodge and Ram are closely associated with the Hemi V8 engine, but this legendary mill has gradually been phased out in favor of the newer Hurricane twin-turbocharged six-cylinder. Now, not long after we heard that the V8-powered Dodge Charger could return, Ram has confirmed that it's brought back the Hemi V8 for the 2026 Ram 1500 pickup. This news is music to the ears of Dodge truck fans (quite literally), as many are prepared to live with the Hemi's inferior consumption to enjoy its effortless power, unmistakable soundtrack, and the promise of long-term durability. A few of these fans may be disappointed to hear that not every derivative of the 1500 has access to the V8, though, including the two best 1500s you can buy. This backtracking move by Ram is refreshing; we're so used to automakers ignoring the pleas of consumers. Thankfully, just as Volkswagen eliminated its hateful touch-based steering controls and brought back buttons, Ram has done the same with its beloved Hemi. "Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you," said Tim Kuniskis, CEO, Ram brand. "Ram screwed up when we dropped the Hemi - we own it and we fixed it. We're not just bringing back a legendary V8, engine, we're igniting an assertive product plan and expanding freedom of choice in powertrain for our customers." Although the Hurricane six-cylinder engine isn't going anywhere, Kuniskis further went on to say: "We heard loud and clear from consumers: there is no replacement for the iconic Hemi V8. At the end of each month, we count sales to customers, not to statisticians or ideologies." Instead of a conventional engine-mounted alternator, the eTorque system features a belt-driven motor generator unit that operates with a 48-volt battery. This system enables a smoother start/stop system and adds torque to the engine under certain conditions - up to 130 lb-ft on initial throttle tip-in. The Hemi V8 produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, and features cylinder deactivation capability to improve gas mileage. Ram promises a towing capacity of up to 11,470 pounds and a payload of up to 1,750 lbs. The following 2026 Ram 1500 trims can all be optionally equipped with the Hemi V8: Tradesman, Express, Warlock, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, and Rebel. It's a no-cost option on the Limited and Longhorn models, both of which get the 3.0-liter Hurricane high-output engine as standard. The Ram 1500 RHO, the closest thing to a TRX with its numerous off-road modifications, will not be available with the Hemi V8. A V8-powered RHO would have been fantastic, but Ram obviously believes that the 540-hp Hurricane engine is a better choice for this extreme pickup, which excels at high-speed off-roading. The high-end Tungsten, the most luxurious of all 1500s with features like massaging seats, also sticks with the 540-hp I6 and can't be specified with the Hemi. Orders for the V8-powered Ram 1500 are open now, and these models will start arriving at dealerships this summer. Ram's decision to give buyers the choice between a trusted V8 and a more economical six-cylinder turbo is a smart one. This change should further boost the appeal of what is already one of the most comfortable and capable pickups in the full-size segment. It'll also prevent V8 fans from rushing to Ford, as the Blue Oval still offers its best-selling truck with an old-school V8 lump. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
