Parktown High cheerleader elated after receiving South African blazer
Jocelyn, and her team, recently came back from Orlando, America, where they competed in the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championships, the official world championships for youth, junior, and senior national cheerleading teams.
'We recently returned from competing at worlds from April 23–25,' said Jocelyn. 'It was an incredible experience. All six South African teams successfully made it to the finals. While not medaling, we did extremely well, and have more work ahead of us for the ICU World Cheerleading Championships in 2027.'

The Grade 10 learner said that when she began the sport in Grade 7, she was drawn to how close the team was, and the strong bond everyone had with each other. 'I loved the idea of being thrown in the air and tumbling across the mat. I love the family I gained through it, and the lessons I learned from it.'

The cheerleader's accolades include: being awarded her provincial Colours in 2023 by the Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association (GMCA), receiving her South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) Colours in 2024 at a provincial competition, and becoming the national and African champions for the high, large, co-ed category, in September 2024, after competing at nationals in Cape Town.
Jocelyn added that receiving her South African blazer was a long time coming, with her journey stemming from her four years in gymnastics, but it wasn't an easy task, with her first trials for the SA team taking place in April 2024. 'Every athlete that was on either team, or in the training programme, trained together for six months, until the second period of trials in October. While training for the national team we all still trained with our actual teams, and continued competing in all the local, provincial, and national competitions that happened along the way. Once the second round of trials was over, the official teams were selected. '
Jocelyn concluded that she wants to continue cheerleading for as long as she can. Participating in competitions for many years to come, and, hopefully, being part of the team that makes history for South Africa with a win.

Joe Schmidt sticks to winning formula as Wallabies eye historic double over Springboks

Valetini's physicality will also be crucial in what could be a wet and muddy affair in the Mother City. 'Corey is a great young kid. He's come in from the Sevens programme, which is something several of the South African speedsters have done,' Schmidt said. 'He's adapting well to the game, and this will be a steep learning curve for him. You want to grow their game and get them comfortable transitioning from Sevens to Fifteens. There's a lot less space to move in, and you must become proficient around the contact area. He has worked hard at that.' According to Schmidt, they expect a fierce aerial battle, and he highlighted that as another strength of Toole's game. He wants to see his side perform better when it comes to competing for high kicks.

Cape Town surfer Paul Sampson secures spot at All-Africa Games
Seye's mission through the African Surfing Confederation has always been about building a platform for African children, not just to surf, but to dream of becoming world champion surfers and respected leaders within their communities. 'It's history in the making, especially considering that this movement is driven by an African leader for African children,' said Shafiek Khan, who has been the surf trainer and mentor to the surfers from the Cape Flats. According to Khan, while this achievement by the African Confederation and Seyer's mission has been nothing short of remarkable, there is significant financial support needed to help the children get the best chance at winning on a global stage, such as the Olympics. Khan met Sampson when he was just five on the beach and before meeting him, Khan met his brother Junaid. Through Khan's surf school, Palama Metzi, Khan used surfing not just as a sport but as a tool to understand children' lives, help them with schooling, provide them with hope and guide them towards brighter futures. 'At one point, we had more than 100 street children in the surf training programme,' said Khan. Khan went further, adopting Paul and Junaid for a few years. 'Today, we are still together and they have grown up from just boys on the beach into professional athletes representing South Africa on the international stage,' Khan said. He has called for South Africa, Africa and global leaders, sports athletes and citizens of the world to step forward to assist in the growth, development and rise of African surfers.
