Thai, Cambodian leaders to meet in Malaysia for ceasefire consultation
Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as the current Asean chair, has invited the Thai leadership to discuss the Thai-Cambodian conflict.
"Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will lead the Thai delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Deputy Defence Minister General Natthaphon Nakpanich, and other senior officials, to attend the consultation at the Prime Minister's Office in Malaysia," he said in a statement today.
He added that it has also been confirmed that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will personally attend the consultation at the invitation of the Asean chair.
Jirayu said the Thai delegation is scheduled to depart from the Royal Thai Air Force base at approximately 10.30am, with the meeting set for 3pm (Malaysian time).
"The purpose of these talks is to listen to proposals that may lead to informed decisions and ultimately restore peace.
"The Thai government remains steadfast in its commitment to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Thailand," he said.
On Friday, Anwar also held separate discussions with both the Thai and Cambodian leaders, urging them to agree to an immediate ceasefire.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who expressed deep concern over the clashes on Friday, likewise urged both sides to agree to an immediate ceasefire and resolve their differences through dialogue.
The border dispute between the two nations escalated on July 25, leading to armed clashes along Cambodia's northern border region.
The latest hostilities have reportedly resulted in over 20 fatalities on the Thai side.
At the same time, Cambodian authorities said that five soldiers and eight civilians have been killed, with thousands displaced on both sides of the border.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been rising since May 28, following a confrontation between soldiers near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which led to the death of a Cambodian soldier.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have long contested an 817km undemarcated stretch of their shared border, which has remained a persistent source of tension and diplomatic strain.

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah reacted with joy over confirmation of continued cooperation between GRS and PH in the coming State election, describing it as a positive step for the State. Its head Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said it is good news for Sabah and the people. 'I thank our Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for upholding the spirit of cooperation between GRS and PH. 'As a PH leader, I welcome such cooperation. Its good news for Sabah,' he said. 'The next step is to discuss seat allocation with PGRS in particular. We will sit down with them. Hopefully, we can iron things out and allocate seats accordingly,' he said. It is understood that the coalition is eyeing around 23 to 25 state seats. Earlier, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah said it would continue its political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. GRS Chairman cum Chief Minister Hajiji said all component parties in GRS had agreed to join forces with PH following discussions. 'We continue the (political) cooperation that stands today between GRS and PH for the coming PRN17,' he said. Hajiji, who is Gagasan Rakyat President, said a formula (on seats distribution) has been worked out between the two ruling coalitions but not yet finalised, as few more things need to be sorted out. The GRS-PH collaboration was born following the last national election when GRS leaders – who were then under Bersatu which was part of Perikatan Nasional – found themselves having to decide whether to be part of the new Federal Unity Government of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, or stay in the opposition led by PN's Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Bersatu election winners soon went under the new GRS grouping. Hajiji said the move was also in line with the strong support GRS received from PH Sabah during the political crisis commonly referred to as the 'Kinabalu Move' aimed at toppling Hajiji in early 2023. Since then, he said, the GRS-PH collaboration brought political stability and progress to Sabah — benefits that justify preserving the alliance. 'Our deepest thanks go to the PH Sabah leaders,' said Hajiji who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President. He also emphasized the importance of GRS as a strong coalition of local parties, striving to fulfil the aspirations of Sabahans who want primarily local-based parties to dominate state politics. 'GRS, born from the grassroots aspirations, will continue to promote mature and inclusive politics by embracing diversity, upholding consensus values and prioritising stability and progress for the state,' he said. 'PBS and Star, each with their own strengths and influence, are among the core contributors to the foundation and resilience of our political home GRS. ‘Respect Labuan sentiment on next top LC choice'

George was commenting on the response of FT Minister in the PM's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Zaliha Mustafa to Beaufort Member of Parliament Datuk Siti Aminah Aching. Siti Aminah had asked in the on-going session of parliament on the delay in the appointment of a Chairman and whether the residency status of a candidate was an issue. The post was last held by Tan Sri Anifah Aman from Sabah who was appointed to the office on a two-year term effective June 19 2023. In March he was also appointed Labuan Senator. His contributions to Labuan as chairman were questioned by some as more was expected of him as the post offered a good emolument and various perks. Anifah's appointment also sparked controversy with many quarters voicing concerns. Allegations emerged over his absence on the island, involvement in programmes and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce spoke of difficulty in meeting him. George hoped this would serve as a lesson and guidance in making a decision. Labuan folks do not want a let-down second time.' The Minister had said several candidates had been identified for the post and it was in the final phase of selection. She added that the post was important as the chairman played a key role in the strategic development developments (Hala Tuju) of the island and must have commitment to serve and address issues. She said as the person selected would be announced soon. Prior to Anifah all previous chairman of the post since 2001 had been local leaders and among them were Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (three terms) Datuk Rozman Isli, Datuk Bashir Alias and Datuk Amir Hussien. The minister said the residential qualification of the Chairman was not an issue as anyone from Sabah or else where could be selected based on merit. In the meantime the term of the seven-member Advisory Council has also expired.
