ABVP protests in Rewa, Harda over Odisha student's suicide

Time of India16-07-2025
Bhopal: Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held protests in various districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Rewa and Harda, over the suicide of Soumyashree Bishi, a student of Fakir Mohan Mahavidyalaya in Balasore, Odisha.
In Rewa, ABVP members gathered at College Square on Tuesday, organised a tribute meeting, and raised slogans demanding justice. In Harda, the protest intensified as ABVP workers burnt an effigy of Sameer Sahu, the head of the department accused of sexually harassing the student, in front of Government Swami Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya.
ABVP's district coordinator in Harda, Sudhan Mankar, told the media that the incident was the result of administrative insensitivity and inaction.
He added that Soumyashree's life could have been saved if timely action had been taken.
Narmadapuram division student leader Lishika was quoted by a section of media saying said Soumyashree had previously lodged a complaint against the HOD for sexual harassment, but the college administration failed to act. Under mental distress, the student ultimately died by suicide on July 13 after being admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Five members of interstate cyber gang held from Delhi

1 2 Prayagraj: Cyber cell police of Prayagraj on Wednesday arrested five members of an interstate gang from Delhi that was allegedly involved in duping gullible people of over Rs 28.62 lakh by putting them under 'digital arrest'. Those arrested were Kaustubh Gupta of Jalaun, Bhanu Saini of Saharanpur, Anurag of Delhi, Shani Jha of Kanpur and Himanshu Kumar of Etawah. Cops also seized seven mobiles, three SUVs, including one Range Rover and one Mercedes Benz, one ATM card, 14 SIMs, one POS machine, and five cheque books from their possession. Five members of the gang were earlier arrested from different parts of the country. Police said the fraudsters contacted the victims under the guise of FedEx International Courier agents and claimed that a parcel going from Mumbai to Iran having drugs has been seized. They further claimed the parcel had their IDs and even terrorists were operating using their IDs. In the next step, a person posing as Crime Branch officer would talk over Skype platform and extort money. During interrogation, fraudsters revealed that they were connected to cyber thugs in countries like Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Thailand etc through Telegram. Their nexus worked in two modes. In the first, cyber thugs sitting in foreign countries contacted people of India through their agents by means like allurements, threats (investment scams, online gaming scams, digital arrest, cheating by using fake WhatsApp DPs of big businessmen/leaders), etc and forced them to get money transferred to the accounts mentioned by them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These 11 Everyday Foods Might Be the Key to Knee Pain Relief Undo In the next mode, agents would lure people from different states of India to earn money and get them to open their current/savings accounts. After taking the account-related documents (cheque book, ATM, internet banking password, etc), they get the OTP forwarder app installed on the phone having a mobile number registered with the concerned bank, due to which the bank OTP received during the transaction reaches the cyber fraudsters sitting in foreign countries directly. After this, they use the mule account in cyber fraud and make transactions in those accounts, giving their commission to the agents sitting in India through USDT (cryptocurrency). To avoid arrest and keep their identity confidential, the accused used techniques like VPN and IP bounce. During investigation, it came to light that these people were connected to many Telegram groups, through which they supplied account numbers to their foreign accomplices.

Puri international airport project has received key approvals, making progress: Min

Bhubaneswar: The ambitious Shree Jagannath International Airport project in Puri is making significant progress with several crucial approvals now in place, Union civil aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday. While the ministry gave 'in-principle' approval to the project on May 6, the expert appraisal committee (EAC) recommended environmental clearance on June 5, with Phase-1 of the airport to have an estimated passenger handling capacity of 4.6 million per annum, the minister's reply revealed. Responding to a question from Rajya Sabha member Subhasish Khuntia, who wanted to know the current status of the proposed airport and other related issues, the minister said. "The phase-1 of the greenfield airport project is designed to handle 4.6 million passengers annually, positioning it as a major aviation hub in eastern India. The development follows the two-stage approval process outlined in the Greenfield Airports Policy, 2008, which includes site clearance and 'in-principle' approval. " State govt, as the project proponent, is responsible for crucial aspects including land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement, funding and securing mandatory environmental clearances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The ministry of defence has already given its no-objection for the project. "The completion timeline depends on various factors such as land acquisition, mandatory clearances and financial closure," Naidu said. He emphasised the project's potential economic impact, citing an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study that shows air connectivity has an economic multiplier effect of 3.25 and an employment multiplier of 6.1. The airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for regional development, boosting tourism, generating employment, and enhancing land values in the surrounding areas. It is anticipated to lead to increased tax revenues and stamp duty collections for the state govt. The project's strategic location in Puri, a major pilgrimage centre, is expected to significantly boost religious tourism and facilitate easier access for international visitors to Jagannath Temple.
