Motivational event organiser linked to immoral acts summoned by Mais before in 2022
The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director, Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, said a former participant of the group's programme lodged a report in 2022, raising concerns regarding the inappropriate modules that the organiser used in the programme.
"The organiser was called in by the hearing panel under the Mais Aqidah Control Committee and was instructed to revise several modules to ensure compliance with Islamic principles,' he said in a statement on Saturday (July 12).
Shahzihan said that Jais did not receive any report about the alleged immoral activities during one of the group's sessions at a convention centre in September last year, which went viral on social media.
However, he said that the department will summon several individuals on Tuesday (July 15) to assist in the investigation and will work closely with the police.
He said Jais will conduct an investigation under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 (false doctrine), on suspicion that a ceremony or act related to Islam had taken place which is contrary to Islamic law.
"Jais views such matters seriously and will take all necessary measures to prevent and counter any activity that goes against Islamic law and ethical values, which are rejected by all levels of society in Selangor and the country at large,' he said.
He also urged the public with information on the programme to contact Jais Enforcement Management Division via its hotline at 1800-88-2424 or to visit the Jais office directly.- Bernama

Harsher punishment needed for those convicted of corruption, says Jerlun MP
KUALA LUMPUR: Jerlun MP Datuk Abd Ghani Ahmad (PN) has advocated for harsher penalties for those convicted of corruption, suggesting maximum jail terms, hefty fines, and asset forfeiture as deterrents. Abd Ghani emphasised that corruption is strictly prohibited in Islam and should be addressed firmly. "It is not enough to simply issue stern warnings. In many cases, action taken has been limited to disciplinary measures or suspensions," he stated during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Aug 6). During his speech, Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) asked whether Abd Ghani supported adopting stricter punishments for corruption, similar to those in countries like China, where the death penalty can be imposed. In response, Abd Ghani expressed support for severe punishments but insisted they must comply with the existing legal framework. "I support heavier penalties, but they must follow our country's laws," he said. He also urged the government to revive the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 amendment Bill - better known as RUU 355 - which had been approved by Cabinet under the previous Perikatan Nasional government but was not tabled in Parliament due to its dissolution in October 2022. "I urge that the remaining technical work be continued so the Bill can be reintroduced in this House," he said. PAS president and Marang MP Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang first proposed the RUU 355 amendment as a private member's Bill in 1996. The Bill seeks to expand the jurisdiction of Syariah Courts beyond the current limits of RM5,000 fines, three years' imprisonment, or six strokes of the cane, aligning it more closely with Syariah law, excluding the death penalty. However, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar stated that RUU 355 would not be tabled during the third session of the 15th Parliament, and they would proceed with the second reading of the Mufti Bill instead.

Mother files new police report over bruising on Zara Qairina's body
Noraidah KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): The mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir has lodged a fresh police report after recalling possible signs of physical trauma on her daughter's body — nearly three weeks after her tragic death at a school hostel in Papar. Noraidah Lamat filed the report at the Sipitang police station on Sunday, stating she had remembered seeing bruises on Zara's back while preparing her body for burial. Her legal counsel, Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, said the memory was triggered during questioning about the state of Zara's body during the Islamic funeral washing ritual at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I on July 17. 'Our client did not mention this earlier because she had completely forgotten due to her overwhelming grief,' they said in a statement. The lawyers asserted that this new detail warrants a fresh investigation into Zara Qairina's death, despite recent remarks by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who said the police had completed their probe and would submit the investigation papers to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) next week. 'Zara Qairina's grave must be exhumed, and a post-mortem must be carried out to determine the exact cause of death and the possibility of foul play,' the lawyers urged. Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that four police reports have been filed in relation to the case, including the one lodged by Noraidah. He added that the investigation paper is currently undergoing a final review at Bukit Aman before being referred to the AGC. 'Any further action will depend on the AGC once the case file is submitted,' he said. Zara Qairina, a student at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar, was found unconscious around 4am on July 16, believed to have fallen from the third floor of her dormitory. She succumbed to her injuries the next day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital. Her death has sparked widespread concern and debate, especially on social media, with renewed calls for justice and reform in handling student safety and bullying in boarding schools.
