JAIS denies approving controversial marriage motivation programme in 2022

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has denied approving a marriage motivation programme that allegedly featured immoral content in another programme three years ago. Its director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said on Nov 15, 2022, a JAIS-appointed clarification panel had obtained an explanation from the organiser following participants' complaints alleging that there were activities that violated Islamic teachings. He said during the clarification session, the panel was presented with a video used by the organiser, which included a 'self-pleasure' technique for women, allegedly to strengthen marital intimacy. Following this, the panel recommended that several aspects and approaches in the programme be revised or removed if they conflicted with Islamic law. The company was also advised to consult religious authorities or experts to ensure full compliance with Islamic law throughout its programmes. "The organiser was also instructed to include a disclaimer stating that the video (which the panel had instructed to be revised) was intended for use by married couples only," he said. "This advice was given to the organiser as a preventive measure against the inclusion of any content that contravenes Islamic law," he said in a statement on Monday (July 21). Mohd Shahzihan clarified that the disclaimer suggested by the panel did not imply that the programme's entire content or modules had been approved, as the company never submitted the complete module to JAIS following the panel's recommendations to this day. "JAIS is confident that had the company adhered to the recommendations made by the panel in 2022, the alleged incident during the programme held at the IDCC Shah Alam (Ideal Convention Centre Shah Alam) would not have occurred," he said. In line with the decision of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), he said JAIS has been tasked with reviewing and improving guidelines for organising Islamic religious and spiritual programmes by considering various incidents, including this case, that have drawn public criticism. The revised guidelines aim to provide a more comprehensive reference for organisers wishing to hold programmes with spiritual or religious elements in Selangor. "JAIS urges the Muslim community in Selangor to continue playing an active role by providing information and reporting any religious or spiritual programmes with suspicious content to the department. "Accurate information from the public is crucial to help JAIS safeguard the principles and implementation of authentic Islamic teachings in line with the understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah in Selangor," he added. Previously, the company in question issued a statement claiming that its 2022 programme had received JAIS' approval after submitting clarifications to the state's religious authority. On July 12, Mohd Shahzihan confirmed in a statement that JAIS had summoned the organiser of the marriage motivation programme in 2022 following a complaint from a former participant, who alleged that the module used in the programme was inappropriate and unsuitable. - Bernama

Every fatwa in Selangor goes through rigorous process

SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today stressed that every fatwa issued in the state goes through a structured and thorough process. A statement posted on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page said the Sultan also decreed that this diligence involved taking into account views from various parties, particularly from the state Fatwa Committee and syariah law experts. The post also shared the procedures undertaken before a fatwa is issued, stating that each ruling must go through a process of complete data collection, comprehensive information gathering, and a precise understanding of the issue before it is discussed. A 'Muzakarah Pakar' (expert discussion) is then held to thoroughly deliberate on the matter, attended by religious scholars, academics and relevant stakeholders, as well as officers from authorised bodies. "If no firm resolution is reached, a 'Bahthul Masail' (discussion of issues) will be convened. "This is a more focused and smaller-scale discussion aimed at resolving complex matters in greater detail and depth." "Only then will the Fatwa Committee Meeting be held, based on Section 48(2) of the Selangor Islamic Religious Administration Enactment 2003." It said every study is presented during the Fatwa Committee Meeting with scholarly value and includes two-way discussions between researchers and committee members. The 'sighah' (wording) of the fatwa that has been decided by the committee will then be reviewed and harmonised during the Technical Committee for the Harmonisation of Fatwa Meeting. "This sighah will be submitted to the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) Members' Meeting to carefully evaluate the proposed fatwa and make a recommendation to the Sultan of Selangor for gazettement. "If the Sultan of Selangor consents to the gazettement of the fatwa, only then will it be submitted to the state executive council meeting," the post added. The Selangor Royal Office stated that once the fatwa had been submitted, the legal advisor's chamber would review it before it was published in the Selangor government gazette. Earlier, Sultan Sharafuddin, through a posting on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, called on Muslims and the people of Selangor to understand and appreciate the essence of today's Friday sermon titled "Precision in Issuing Fatwas". – Bernama

Shah Alam marriage retreat exposed as bizarre sex ritual cult

WHAT began as a marriage motivation retreat promising empowerment and confidence ended with shocking allegations of rituals, sensual performances, and spiked drinks. Held at a convention centre in Shah Alam last September, the program's final night reportedly took a dark turn. A participant revealed on Facebook that around 50 women gathered in a dimly lit hall, where facilitators known as 'Cleopatra' entered to romantic music before the founder appeared, dressed provocatively and dancing in front of stunned guests. Participants were then offered a homemade drink containing what was claimed to be a mix of 'magic mushrooms' from Bali and chocolate, described as sweet, spicy, and throat-irritating. Within minutes, many allegedly experienced waves of arousal, boldness, and euphoria. The night escalated when female facilitators performed sensual dances, with some engaging in lewd acts among themselves. The program also conducted rituals described as 'spiritual cleansing' and 'rebirth', echoing practices from other faiths, which participants deemed contrary to Islamic teachings. Shockingly, these revelations surfaced after authorities confirmed the organiser had previously been summoned in 2022 by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) over similar concerns. Although instructed to amend modules to comply with Islamic guidelines, no official complaint was received about the recent program until the exposé went viral. JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said an investigation is underway under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment, with several individuals set to be called this week. Public outrage continues to grow as authorities vow stern action against practices violating Islamic law. —July 13, 2025 Main image: Sinar Harian

Shah Alam organiser summoned by MAIS over immoral acts in 2022

SHAH ALAM: The organiser of a marital motivation programme, previously flagged for inappropriate content, has resurfaced in controversy after allegations of immoral activities during a session last year. The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) had summoned the organiser in 2022 following complaints about their modules. Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, director of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), confirmed that a former participant had lodged a report in 2022. The organiser was instructed to revise certain modules to align with Islamic principles. However, no reports were filed regarding the recent viral allegations of misconduct at a convention centre in September last year. Mohd Shahzihan stated that JAIS will summon individuals on Tuesday (July 15) to assist in the investigation. The department is collaborating with the police and will probe the matter under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, which addresses false doctrines. 'JAIS takes such matters seriously and will act against any activity contradicting Islamic law and ethical values,' he said. The public is urged to share information via JAIS' hotline at 1800-88-2424 or by visiting their office. - Bernama

Motivational event organiser linked to immoral acts summoned by Mais before in 2022

SHAH ALAM: The organiser of a marital motivation programme, alleged to have conducted immoral activities during a session at a convention centre here, was summoned by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) three years ago regarding their modules. The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director, Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, said a former participant of the group's programme lodged a report in 2022, raising concerns regarding the inappropriate modules that the organiser used in the programme. "The organiser was called in by the hearing panel under the Mais Aqidah Control Committee and was instructed to revise several modules to ensure compliance with Islamic principles,' he said in a statement on Saturday (July 12). Shahzihan said that Jais did not receive any report about the alleged immoral activities during one of the group's sessions at a convention centre in September last year, which went viral on social media. However, he said that the department will summon several individuals on Tuesday (July 15) to assist in the investigation and will work closely with the police. He said Jais will conduct an investigation under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 (false doctrine), on suspicion that a ceremony or act related to Islam had taken place which is contrary to Islamic law. "Jais views such matters seriously and will take all necessary measures to prevent and counter any activity that goes against Islamic law and ethical values, which are rejected by all levels of society in Selangor and the country at large,' he said. He also urged the public with information on the programme to contact Jais Enforcement Management Division via its hotline at 1800-88-2424 or to visit the Jais office directly.- Bernama
