Listed: Ten most 'AI exposed' jobs AND the roles humans still dominate
One in ten graduates have already altered their career plans due to fears that artificial intelligence (AI) will jeopardise their job prospects. University leavers aiming for careers in graphic design, coding, film and art are particularly worried about the impact of AI, with many fearing the rapidly evolving technology could make their jobs redundant.
These concerns arise as Britain's job market continues to cool, with firms cutting back on recruitment and increasing redundancies in response to the Chancellor's National Insurance increase and a rise in the minimum wage. According to a survey of 4,072 individuals by university and career advisers Prospects, 10 percent stated they had changed their career plans because of AI, a figure that rises to 11 percent among graduates.
The primary reason given was worry that their chosen jobs could become redundant. Opportunities in the creative industries were highlighted as being particularly at risk from AI's rapid progression.
Risks and opportunities
Chris Rea from Prospects noted that while many graduates are avoiding certain careers due to AI, others are exploring new industries because of the opportunities the technology offers, reports the Express.
Jeremy Swan, from the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, said technological advances are forcing graduates to seek roles where they cannot be easily substituted by AI.
He stated: "I think it's about re-framing people's thinking, so that they can see there are opportunities out there that look slightly different than what they're used to."
Mr Swan said AI has left many students and graduates feeling "really uncertain about where they stand".
Data from job search platform Adzuna reveals entry-level positions have plummeted by 32 percent since Chat GPT launched in November 2022.
Mr Swan added: "There's a lot of uncertainty that's come off the back of AI, people worrying how it's going to affect their chosen career paths, and we would just say this is where decent career support matters more than ever."

Recruitment has declined LinkedIn data reveals that UK hiring dropped by 6.7 percent in June compared to May, following a 3.9 percent increase the previous month. Official statistics also show that unemployment rose to a four-year high of 4.7 percent in the three months leading up to May.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey recently suggested that larger interest rate cuts may be necessary if the jobs market continues to slow down. City traders predict rates could be reduced from 4.25 percent to 4 percent at Thursday's Monetary Policy Committee meeting.
University graduates are now facing an increasingly challenging job market as employers reduce graduate recruitment. Data from Adzuna shows that graduate job listings have plummeted by nearly 23 percent in the year to April as rising taxes lead businesses to cut back on entry-level hiring.
Meanwhile, increases to the national living wage mean many graduate schemes now only offer salaries equivalent to the minimum wage, which is currently £12.21 per hour or £25,500 a year for full-time workers.
Major employer KPMG has reduced its recruitment scheme, hiring just 942 graduates and school leavers last year compared with 1,399 in 2023. The company expects to hire around 1,000 this year.
The competition for entry-level roles is more intense than ever, leading many graduates to utilise AI for assistance with job applications. According to a survey by Prospects, 43 percent have used AI to edit or draft a cover letter, while 26 percent have employed it for answering questions on application forms.
However, Mr Swan suspects that students might be under-reporting their use of AI.
He advised students to ensure they use "these tools in an ethical way", even if AI can provide a starting point for CVs or cover letters.

WhatsApp deletes over 6.8million scam accounts but experts say more action is needed
WhatsApp's parent company Meta says it has taken down millions of scam accounts that were targeting users globally. Millions of scam accounts have been removed from WhatsApp. Meta, the popular messaging app's parent company, has claimed it took down 6.8million accounts which were linked to scams in the first half of this year. The tech giant says that many of these suspicious accounts were tied to organised criminals in South East Asia, who often used forced labour to carry out scams targeting users all over the world. It comes as Meta announced new safety measures for WhatsApp, which aim to warn users of potential scams and fraudulent activity. This mass deletion of millions of accounts specifically targeted criminal operations which involve adding users to group chats to promote false investment schemes and other scams. And as AI continues to evolve, these scams have only gotten smarter. In one case, WhatsApp worked with Meta and OpenAI to disrupt scams linked to a Cambodian criminal group. The scammers were offering cash for likes on social media posts promoting a fake rent-a-scooter pyramid scheme, reported the BBC. Meta said scammers had used ChatGPT to create instructions issued to potential victims, who the cybercriminals would first contact with a text message before moving the conversation to social media or private messaging apps. These scams were usually completed on payment or cryptocurrency platforms. But while Meta says it has deleted 6.8million fraudulent accounts in the first half of this year alone, many claim the company should be doing more to prevent cyber crooks from being able to set up their scams in the first place. Consumer law expert Lisa Webb said: "Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users are being inundated with fraudulent ads for everything from fake investment opportunities to dodgy products and non-existent job offers. "Meta needs to ensure that scams are prevented from ever appearing on its platforms in the first place. "Ofcom must now take action to enforce the parts of the Online Safety Act already in effect, and to issue robust rules governing fraudulent paid-for ads, so that tech firms are forced to take full responsibility for the content on their sites." The scam crackdown coincides with the UK's new Online Safety Act, which now requires social media platforms and websites to add age verification features to prevent young kids from accessing inappropriate content or pornography. Back in March, new rules requiring sites to protect all users from illegal content were introduced. And as of July 25, the Act introduced new rules specifically to protect children. The Gov website says: "Platforms are now required to use highly effective age assurance to prevent children from accessing pornography, or content which encourages self-harm, suicide or eating disorder content. "Platforms must also prevent children from accessing other harmful and age-inappropriate content such as bullying, hateful content and content which encourages dangerous stunts or ingesting dangerous substances. Platforms must also provide parents and children with clear and accessible ways to report problems online when they do arise." To adhere to these rules, sites, search engines and social media apps must also use algorithms that can filter out harmful material for younger users. But many people have complained that the new law puts age restrictions on vital content and sites that should not be deemed 'adult', including Reddit forum threads on alcohol and even some Wikipedia sections. US eyes 7% more nuclear power through restarts, upgrades
August 7 - As soaring AI use hikes demand for new power capacity, U.S. utilities are restarting mothballed nuclear plants as well as 'uprating' the capacity and extending the licences of operational reactors. A number of Big Tech companies are seeking nuclear power to provide dispatchable low carbon energy and in May President Trump rolled out several policies to increase existing nuclear capacity alongside measures to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) and larger conventional reactors. Trump wants the U.S. to increase the capacity of existing reactors by 5 GW by 2030. Holtec International and Constellation are restarting two nuclear facilities with a combined nameplate capacity of 1.6 GW. NextEra Energy spoke with regional grid operators and filed notice with federal regulators to potentially restart the 600 MW Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa, NextEra Energy CEO John Ketchum told Reuters in January. Restarts and upgrades could increase the country's nuclear net generation capacity by around 7% from 97 GW today, if Trump's targets are met. MAP: US nuclear power plants in operation Restarting a mothballed nuclear facility offers a faster timeline and lower upfront costs than building a new one from scratch but is still an arduous process that requires several years for planning, licensing, inspections, equipment purchases, refurbishment, workforce training and fuel management actions. Holtec is on track to restart the 800 MW Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan this year following its announcement of the project in the summer of 2022. On July 24, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) moved Palisades from "decommissioning" to 'operating' status, ahead of schedule. Faster regulatory approval and long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with offtakers are important for raising funds from investors such as venture capital and private equity groups, Patrick O'Brien, Director, Government Affairs and Communications at Holtec International, told Reuters Events. Faster approvals lead to shorter project durations and lower costs and in May Trump ordered the NRC to accelerate its licensing processes. The presidential orders have led to 'improved timelines' in Holtec's dealings with the regulator, O'Brien said. The process of switching the Palisades license from "decommissioning" to 'operating' was especially cumbersome for the NRC because it was a first-of-a-kind process, said Katy Huff, Associate Professor and Director, Advanced Reactor Fuel Cycles Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 'I expect the reviews of [Constellation's] Crane Clean Energy Center and [NextEra's] Duane Arnold plant will go more quickly,' she said. Crucial steps Holtec's signing of a long-term PPA in 2023 with Wolverine Power Cooperative in Michigan was 'the key piece' that allowed the company to move forward with the reopening of Palisades, O'Brien said. Long-term certainty helps 'put shovels in the ground and get some of these projects done,' he said. As AI demand soars, power-hungry tech groups are keen to sign long-term deals and can be willing to pay a premium for clean power, O'Brien noted. CHART: Forecast US data center electricity demand Constellation Energy is investing $1.6 billion to reopen the 837 MW Three Mile Island Unit 1 in Pennsylvania in 2027, now called the Crane Clean Energy Center, on the back of a 20-year PPA to supply clean power to Microsoft data centers. The plant could restart as early as 2027, a year ahead of schedule, following 'the approval of an early interconnection request by grid operator PJM and significant progress made on hiring, reactor operator training and major equipment purchases,' Constellation said in June. Re-staffing shuttered nuclear facilities is a 'key challenge' in the restarting process, Huff said. 'Bringing these nuclear plants back online will require a talented pool of technicians and trades workers, such as welders and electricians certified in nuclear-specific codes and standards," she told Reuters Events. "Recruiting and training staff to refurbish and run these plants may require significant effort.' Palisades had around 200 workers while it was inactive and by July Holtec was close to reaching a fully-staffed level of around 600 people. Re-staffing takes time because extensive training is necessary to 'build a culture of safety' among nuclear workers, O'Brien said. Securing community support is also essential but less challenging than in the past, O'Brien said, pointing to a June 2025 poll by the non-partisan Pew Research group that showed that about six-in-ten (59%) Americans now back new nuclear power capacity to generate electricity. Limited number While growing demand has improved the business case for restarts, most reactors that have entered the decommissioning process will not be suitable, Huff said. 'Only reactors which have been shut down recently and retain infrastructure that is largely intact stand a realistic chance of restart," Huff said. "Reactors further along in decommissioning face more substantial hurdles, primarily due to the economic requirements of refurbishment." The NRC approved 6 GW of uprates over the past 20 years and is currently expecting applications for a further 2 GW, she said. Constellation is 'working to secure customer commitments' to increase the capacity of its 2.3 GW Limerick Clean Energy Center in Pennsylvania by 340 MW, the company said on July 15. Duke Energy is seeking to add 300 MW of capacity in the Carolinas through power uprate projects at Catawba Nuclear Station, McGuire Nuclear Station and Brunswick Nuclear Plant, as well as a 45 MW uprate project at Oconee Nuclear Station that was finalized in 2024. 'To help meet growth needs in the Carolinas by the early 2030s, we'll have added the equivalent of a new small modular reactor by increasing the output of our existing nuclear fleet,' Steven Capps, senior vice president New Nuclear Generation and Operations Support at Duke Energy, told Reuters Events. Some 24 of the 94 operational U.S. nuclear reactors have licenses that are set to expire prior to 2035, the DOE said in 2023. Duke Energy aims to extend the operating licenses of 11 reactors it has at its six nuclear facilities – three in North Carolina and another three in South Carolina. Constellation is pursuing license renewals across its fleet of 21 nuclear reactors, including a 20-year extension for the 1.1 GW Clinton nuclear facility in Illinois, which is currently being reviewed by the NRC. Constellation's deal with Meta in June includes a 20-year PPA to provide clean power from the Clinton facility. Constellation's CEO Joe Dominguez said the partnership shows 'the relicensing and expansion of existing plants is just as impactful as finding new sources of energy.'
