CF Montreal announce rebuild in letter to fans
Montreal has been in a downward spiral since losing in the conference semifinals of the 2022 MLS playoffs, 3-1 to the New York City Football Club.
The club has the worst record of the 30 MLS teams this season at 3-15-6 (15 points) with just 20 goals scored against 45 allowed.
Last season, Montreal finished 11-13-10 (43 points) and lost to Atlanta United in a wild-card round match on penalty kicks.
The 2023 team finished 12-17-5 (41 points) and out of the playoffs.
"We share your dissatisfaction with the Club's results, and it is our responsibility to build a winning team that we can be proud of," read the letter, signed by club president and CEO Gabriel Gervais, as well as Luca Saputo and Simone Saputo, the children of team owner Joey Saputo.
"That is why we have decided to undertake a rebuild and launch a new chapter of CF Montreal. A chapter based on ambition and pride. A new era with victory at the heart of our sporting ambitions, while also honoring our rich history and the connection with you, our 12th player."
The trio vowed in the letter to take "concrete steps" during the transfer window toward that rebuild.
On March 24, head coach Laurent Courtois was fired after an 0-4-1 start.

Max Scherzer, Blue Jays hold off Royals
August 2 - Max Scherzer pitched six efficient innings, Davis Schneider had two RBIs, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. Perez hit a curveball to left with two out in the sixth for his 20th homer of the season. He is the first Royals player with nine 20-homer seasons. Adam Frazier led off the Royals seventh with a double against Brendon Little, took third on a groundout and scored on Isbel's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. For the game, Cameron allowed four runs, six hits, and one walk with one strikeout in 6 1/3 innings. With one out and one on in the home seventh, Steven Cruz replaced Cameron. He walked pinch hitter Nathan Lukes and allowed Ernie Clement's RBI single. Cruz left with shoulder discomfort with a 0-2 count on Guerrero. RFA F Nicholas Robertson avoids arbitration, signs with Leafs
August 2 - Restricted free-agent forward Nicholas Robertson avoided arbitration and signed a one-year contract extension worth $1.825 million with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced Saturday. Robertson was scheduled to have his arbitration hearing on Sunday, Sportsnet reported. He recorded 22 points (15 goals, seven assists) in 69 games last season for Toronto. He signed a one-year, $875,000 contract ahead of training camp last year on the heels of requesting a trade from the team. Robertson, 23, has totaled 56 points (32 goals, 24 assists) in 156 career games since being selected by the Maple Leafs in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft. --Field Level Media

Former Nottingham Forest defender undergoing medical ahead of MLS move which will see him link-up with Wilfried Zaha and Dean Smith
Former Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo is undergoing a medical ahead of joining MLS side Charlotte FC. The 29-year-old, a former England U20 international, is a free agent after his contract at the City Ground ran out this summer. Toffolo made just seven appearances for Forest last season, including four in the Premier League, and has been looking for a new challenge. Leicester City were also interested in Toffolo but he has opted to go Stateside and join up with former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith. Toffolo has agreed a three year contract but will not be in contention for face Guadalajara in the Leagues Cup on Monday as he will need to wait for his work permit. Forest are moving closer to signing Fulham winger Adama Traore following the arrival of Dan Ndoye from Bologna and they are keen on Southampton 's Matheus Fernandes and Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.
