Max Scherzer, Blue Jays hold off Royals
Scherzer (2-1) allowed one run, five hits, and no walks with five strikeouts.
Bo Bichette had three hits and an RBI to help Toronto gain a split of the first two games of a three-game series.
Salvador Perez hit a solo home run for the Royals.
The Blue Jays scored three in the third against Noah Cameron (5-5). Myles Straw bunted to the right side for a single. Tyler Heineman was hit by a pitch. The runners advanced on Joey Loperfido's sacrifice. Davis Schneider blooped a two-run single to right center and took second on right fielder John Rave's error. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked, and Bo Bichette stroked an RBI single to right.
Ali Sanchez took over in the fourth at catcher for Heineman, who took a hard foul off his mask in the third. The Blue Jays said that he had a head contusion.
Nick Loftin batted for Jonathan India in the fifth. India was hit on the arm by a pitch in the third. Loftin grounded out to Scherzer to move Kyle Isbel, who had doubled with one out, to third. Bobby Witt Jr. flied out to center to end the inning.
Perez hit a curveball to left with two out in the sixth for his 20th homer of the season. He is the first Royals player with nine 20-homer seasons.
Adam Frazier led off the Royals seventh with a double against Brendon Little, took third on a groundout and scored on Isbel's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.
For the game, Cameron allowed four runs, six hits, and one walk with one strikeout in 6 1/3 innings.
With one out and one on in the home seventh, Steven Cruz replaced Cameron. He walked pinch hitter Nathan Lukes and allowed Ernie Clement's RBI single. Cruz left with shoulder discomfort with a 0-2 count on Guerrero. Taylor Clarke took over and induced a double play grounder.
Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save.

August 5 - Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado apologized to his team and its fans Tuesday as he nears his return from an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. He has 25 strikeouts versus four walks over 20 innings. Alvarado is 19-26 with 52 saves and a 3.40 ERA in 400 career games (one start) with the Tampa Bay Rays (2017-20) and Phillies. The Phillies (64-48) entered play on Tuesday holding a 1 1/2-game lead over the second-place New York Mets (63-50) in the National League East. Philadelphia acquired closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins prior to the trade deadline last week. Report: Unrivaled salaries to rise; 90 percent of '26 rosters set
August 5 - The Unrivaled women's basketball league has already signed nearly 90 percent of its player pool ahead of its second season in 2026. "We have a few spots left open to fill and then we're pretty much ready to go," Unrivaled co-founder Alex Bazzell recently confirmed to Front Office Sports. With the 3-on-3 league expanding its pool from 36 to 42 players in 2026, the math adds up to about 35 to 37 spots already being filled across the six teams. The six additional players will form a developmental pool and will sub in for injured players throughout the season, as needed. Unrivaled has not officially announced any new players. Notable absences from the league's 2025 debut campaign included Caitlin Clark, A'ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum. Paige Bueckers was still in college in 2025 but is expected to join on a $350,000 salary for 2026, per reports. That's more than her entire four-year WNBA rookie deal. Unrivaled co-founder Napheesa Collier told the podcast "A Touch More" last week that salaries are expected to rise in 2026 from the average of $220,000 last season. Bazzell, who is married to Collier, confirmed the salary hike to Front Office Sports, although without providing any specific figures. "The numbers are going up because the business outperformed every metric that we had," Bazzell said. "It's part of our business model that we built from the ground up, which is that as the business continues to drive more revenue, the revenue is going to get funneled back into the players." Rain-shortened MLB Speedway Classic tops Saturday sports ratings
The 2025 MLB Speedway Classic was the most-watched sporting event on Saturday, despite being rain-shortened. FOX's rain-delay coverage of the game out-performed all competitive prime-time telecasts that night with 1.78 million viewers, FOX Sports said Tuesday. Game-play coverage from 9:42-10:32 PM ET on Saturday peaked at 2.4 million viewers. A record crowd of 91,032 for a regular-season Major League Baseball game got to see all the hype leading up to the event at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, before rain washed out the game in the bottom of the first inning. The complete MLB Speedway Classic on FOX averaged 1,601,000 viewers over Saturday and Sunday. Atlanta beat Cincinnati 4-2 when play resumed on Sunday. ___
