Sindh CM, Islamic Development Bank discuss housing, women empowerment projects
ISLAMABAD: The chief minister of Pakistan's southern Sindh province discussed housing for flood affectees and women empowerment projects with a high-level delegation of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), state-run media reported on Thursday.
The IsDB is financing $200 million for the reconstruction of houses for those affected by the catastrophic 2022 floods. Torrential rains and melting glaciers triggered flash floods across the country that killed over 1,700 people and caused damages worth $33 billion, according to Pakistan's estimates.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah met an IsDB delegation led by its Regional Director, Dr. Walid Abdelwahab, to discuss the Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project (SFEHRP) and the Sindh Integrated Health and Women Empowerment Project. Both projects involve collaboration with the World Bank, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.
'The chief minister welcomed Dr. Abdelwahab and expressed gratitude for the IsDB's support in rebuilding homes for the flood-affected population,' APP reported.
Shah said the Sindh government, in partnership with international collaborators and NGOs, is actively implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects in various districts to improve public health, particularly in flood-affected and underserved communities.
'In response to the chief minister's request, the IsDB agreed to provide additional support for the WASH project,' the report said.
Shah stressed that the SFEHRP and WASH projects have been designed to enable owner-driven, multi-hazard-resilient reconstruction of core housing units following the 2022 floods.
The Sindh Integrated Health and Women Empowerment Project is a $280 million initiative that includes financing of $50 million from the IsDB, $30 million from the Sindh government, and $200 million from foreign fund assistance (FFA).
Shah explained that the project aims to enhance the utilization and quality of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent, and nutrition (RMNCAH+N) services for poor and vulnerable populations, particularly adolescents and women, in targeted areas of the province.
'The process to hire a third-party firm to oversee the skill development of 6,000 eligible women has begun in consultation with the IsDB,' the APP said.
As part of the program, 124 government dispensaries will be rehabilitated and upgraded, with diagnostic and preliminary design reports already completed, the state-run media said.

Islamic Development Bank supports Pakistani project to reactivate out-of-work women doctors
KARACHI: Pakistan's Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and health and education tech platform EDUCAST on Wednesday launched a telemedicine initiative aimed at reviving the careers of out-of-practice Pakistani women doctors in a project funded by the Islamic Development Bank. Originally launched in 2018, the eDoctor program was born out of a national need to reclaim licensed but inactive female doctors who had exited the medical field due to social, familial, or logistical barriers, resulting in estimated Rs. 35 billion losses to the public exchequer. As many as 35 percent of female medical doctors are unemployed in Pakistan, according to a Gallup Pakistan survey in 2023. The first phase of the project successfully trained and reactivated over 1,500 female doctors across 27 countries through a self-paced, digitally-enabled certification program in partnership with Germany's Lecturio and Standford University's Digital Medic platform. The second phase of the project, Doctor 2.0, launched this week will offer advanced online certification in clinical practice and telemedicine, hands-on clinical observation opportunities at partner clinics, access to Al-powered virtual clinics via smartphones and integration into national initiatives such as ElderCare, polio eradication, MCH support, and rural telehealth. 'This is more than a training program, this is a movement to empower Pakistani women doctors through technology, purpose and dignity,' said Prof. Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, Acting Vice Chancellor of DUHS. 'With Doctor 2.0, we're giving them a toolkit to reclaim their profession and serve their people.' She added that Doctor 2.0 was positioned to become a 'global model' for female-led, Al-powered, digital health, with plans to export the model to conflict-affected and underserved countries through partnerships with humanitarian agencies. 'This program embodies what modern, resilient, and inclusive health care should look like,' EDUCAST CEO Abdullah Butt said. 'We're proud to be the digital backbone of this transformative initiative.' Past work of the eDoctor project include managing over 500,000 patients through EDUCAST's COVID home care program in Sindh during the coronavirus pandemic. In Afghanistan, the program provided teleconsultation services across 20 Afghan provinces, enabling cancer care, maternal health, and urgent second opinions, while in Yemen, through partnerships with NGOs like INSAN, it offered digital support in areas with no access to on-ground health services. The program was also used to mobilize tele-triage and digital support during emergencies such as floods in Pakistan and is the backbone of Pakistan's first elderly home health care platform, BRIDGE, supporting hundreds of senior citizens remotely.

Pakistan says 44 million vaccinated in ongoing anti-polio nationwide campaign
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have administered polio drops to over 44 million children in the country's ongoing nationwide vaccination drive, state-run media reported this week. Pakistan launched a nationwide campaign from Apr. 21-27 to vaccinate over 45 million children against polio. The country reported 74 cases in 2024 and has planned three major vaccination drives in the first half of this year. The current campaign is the second of 2025, with a third set to begin from May 26 to June 1. 'The government has successfully administered anti-polio drops to over 44 million children across Pakistan in five days during ongoing vaccination drive,' the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on Saturday. Pakistan's National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) said the ongoing polio vaccination campaign is being conducted simultaneously in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The APP report said the ongoing vaccination coverage has reached 97 percent in Punjab and Sindh provinces and 99 percent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. 'In the federal capital Islamabad, 99 percent of the target has been achieved while Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported 100 percent coverage, and Gilgit-Baltistan achieved 99 percent,' it added. The report said the NEOC expected another one million children to be vaccinated by Apr. 27. 'Parents have been urged to fully cooperate with polio workers and ensure that all children under the age of five receive polio drops during every campaign,' the APP said. Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan remain the last polio-endemic countries in the world. In the early 1990s, Pakistan reported around 20,000 cases annually, but by 2018, the number had dropped to eight. Six cases were reported in 2023 and only one in 2021. Pakistan's polio eradication program, launched in 1994, has faced persistent challenges, including vaccine misinformation and resistance from some religious hard-liners who claim immunization is a foreign conspiracy to sterilize Muslim children or a cover for Western espionage. Militant groups have also repeatedly targeted and killed polio vaccination workers.
