Leicester to sack Van Nistelrooy and replace him with axed Premier League boss

Daily Mirror21-05-2025

Ruud van Nistelrooy will leave Leicester City in the coming days with Russell Martin, the former Southampton head coach, poised to replace him following the club's relegation from the Premier League.
Van Nistelrooy, 48, was appointed as Steve Cooper's successor back in November following a brief but positive interim stint in charge at Manchester United. But the Dutchman ultimately failed to preserve the Foxes' top-flight status after overseeing just five wins from 26 league matches during his chastening tenure.
The Leicester chief has gone public over his plans for next season in a bid to get the green light from the club's hierarchy to lead a promotion push in the Championship.
But a new report from The Mail claims that Van Nistelrooy will depart imminently with Martin in pole position to replace him after holding talks with Leicester's powerbrokers.
Martin, 39, has been out of work since he was relieved of his duties by Southampton back in December. The Saints were also unable to achieve an upturn in results, though, and will join Leicester back in the Championship next season.
While the report outlines that a deal for Martin to succeed Van Nistelrooy is not yet agreed, it notes that a deal is likely to be concluded in the coming days.
It remains unclear whether or not Van Nistelrooy will take charge of Leicester's final game of the season on Sunday, when they travel to Bournemouth.
While Van Nistelrooy has been open about his thoughts on next season, he made it clear that the club hierarchy had given him little in the way of assurances over his future, admitting he was none the wiser as to whether he would continue in his post or not.
"I know what my plan is to bring the club back but I am waiting on alignment," he said last month after relegation was confirmed. "The quicker the better for the football club."
It emerged earlier this week that Leicester have been referred to an independent commission by the Premier League over an alleged profit and sustainability rule breach relating to the 2023-24 campaign, when the club were in the Championship.

Chelsea issue telling response after Scholes makes bold Caicedo claim

Chelsea issued a telling response after Paul Scholes' comments about midfielder Moises Caicedo caused a stir on social media. After a mixed first season at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has grown into his role at Chelsea, featuring in all 38 Premier League games and thriving in Enzo Maresca's side. The Ecuadorian international was deservedly crowned Chelsea's Player of the Year, having helped guide the club back to the Champions League as well as scoring in the final of their Conference League win over Real Betis. But not everyone was convinced with Caicedo's impact for the Blues this season, most notably former Manchester United midfielder Scholes. Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap with SkyBet, Scholes said: 'I think a lot of people talk about Caicedo. 'He's played 38 games'. Brilliant, what an achievement. Did he control a lot of games for Chelsea? I don't remember that. 'I think there's an era now, with midfielders especially, where you can go through seasons and games without really contributing.' Many fans on social media were surprised by Scholes' comments, and it appears even Chelsea were keen to issue a rebuttal. Posting on the club's X account, the Blues posted a thread of statistics highlighting that Caicedo had made the most appearances (38) and won the most tackles (114) of any Chelsea player in the Premier League last season. — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 3, 2025 Only four players made more tackles than Caicedo in the league last campaign, with Marc Cucurella the next best in a Chelsea shirt with 67. Some fans on social media were less cryptic with their rebutals towards Scholes for his comments. 'This is genuinely one of the worst bits of punditry I've ever seen. And if Paul Scholes has said this he quite simply doesn't watch much football,' one user wrote on X. More Trending Another added: 'You can't watch Chelsea's games, and do even a 30-second stat check, and think Moises Caicedo that was a star for Brighton, and now Chelsea doesn't 'contribute a lot'. The eye test doesn't lie. The stats don't lie. He's wrong'. Even Caicedo's fellow teammates have been vocal with their praise about his consistent levels of performance this season. 'He's a machine. From the start of the season, he has been our best player,' Cole Palmer told Sky Sports last month. 'Wins the ball back all the time. Always 100 per cent everyday. Humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Middlesbrough part ways with manager Carrick

June 4 (Reuters) - Middlesbrough have sacked head coach Michael Carrick, the second-tier Championship club said on Wednesday after a disappointing season in which they missed out on a spot in the promotion playoffs. Former Manchester United and England player Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in 2022 and guided them to a fourth-placed finish and the playoffs in his first season, but the club have finished 8th and 10th in their past two campaigns. "Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick. Michael's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club," the club said in a statement. Carrick made more than 700 club appearances in his career and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League at United under Alex Ferguson. His first stint in management came during an interim spell at United following the sacking of Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

Tierney in Arsenal farewell message ahead of Celtic return

Read more: Tierney initially departed Glasgow's east end for Arsenal in 2019. He has since made 144 appearances for the club, winning an FA Cup and two Community Shields. Tierney recently reflected on his time at the Emirates Stadium, as he sent a parting message to the fans: "Just thank you for everything from day one," said the defender [ "They [the fans] supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well. "I think that's what I'm most grateful for, the times where it wasn't so good or so easy for me is when they probably supported me most, so I'm just very grateful and I feel very lucky to have the support from them. "I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky. "When I first came in, obviously the club is huge, absolutely massive, but in the league table we were probably where we shouldn't be. I think the growth over the last three or four years has been incredible and I think this club and this group of players and the manager are just going to go on to even better things in the future. "It'll be hard but it's a happy goodbye. I've loved it here, loved every minute of it. There are countless memories that are amazing for me; your debut is always special, and winning the FA Cup as well in the first season. "It's a great team, and I'm so close to some of the boys in there. I've been here a long time, so it'll be sad but a happy goodbye." Tierney found the back of the net in his final Arsenal appearance, opening the scoring for his now ex-side in a 2-1 win over Southampton on the last day of the Premier League campaign.
