Gantry toll project to reduce congestion in Kong Kong, SDE areas of Johor

JOHOR BARU: The construction of a gantry toll structure, expected to be completed by Dec 15, is set to reduce traffic congestion in the Kong Kong area and along the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE).
Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the project has achieved 20.43 per cent progress, ahead of the scheduled timeline.
He said the gantry toll construction is a solution to the long-standing dispute over the opening of a flyover that has already been completed.
"This flyover, built by Meridin East Sdn Bhd, was completed in 2021 and connects the Kong Kong area to the SDE. It was constructed with the objective of dispersing traffic from the Kong Kong residential area to the Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat industrial areas.
"The flyover, which cost RM53 million, helps shorten travel from Jalan J10 to Pasir Gudang/Tanjung Langsat, avoiding congestion that typically occurs during peak hours," he said in a statement.
Fazli said, without the flyover, users would have to go through the Cahaya Baru toll plaza, make a U-turn at the Tiram toll plaza, and return to the earlier toll plaza, adding 40km to the journey and incurring an additional toll charge of RM11.20.
He said the situation also led some drivers to make U-turns at unsafe spots, thereby posing road safety risks.
He added that with the flyover's opening, commuters from the Kong Kong area can directly access the SDE and continue to the Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat industrial zones, cutting their travel distance to just 7km.

JPJ to audit 500 ‘high-risk' bus, lorry operators

A collision between a lorry and an FRU truck on May 13, which left nine police officers dead and two critically injured, was among recent accidents that made the headlines. (Bernama pic) BUTTERWORTH : Audits will be conducted on 500 operators of public service vehicles and high-risk goods commercial vehicles from Monday, according to the director-general of the road transport department Aedy Fadly Ramli. He said his team had reviewed outstanding summonses, and identified a list of high-risk operators, which includes 300 lorries, 100 tour buses and 100 express buses. The main focus of the operation is to assess the level of compliance on safety, vehicle maintenance, driver management, and regulations under the Road Transport Act. Aedy said the action was taken following the recent accidents involving heavy vehicles, including the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris on June 9. Strict action will be taken against any operator found to be violating regulations or neglecting safety aspects, he said.

Transport Ministry names and shames bus and logistics firms with most traffic summonses in crackdown

PUTRAJAYA, June 25 — The Ministry of Transport said today it would begin exposing the names of transport service providers with the highest traffic summonses, as part of a clampdown on offenders triggered by a series of deadly road accidents in the last few months. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the list will be released from time to time as a stern warning to keep bus and logistics operators in line. The offences cited include speeding and reckless driving, failure to meet safety standards, and driving without a licence. The list is divided into two categories — express bus companies and logistics firms. 'This is a drastic measure we are taking after several deadly road crashes, and after the public asks us what we and the Road Transport Department plan to do to address the problem,' Loke told a press conference here. Topping the offenders list under the logistics category was KDEB Waste Management, the project management company hired by the Selangor government to collect waste. The ministry said KDEB has over 22,000 outstanding traffic summonses for various offences. Among commercial bus operators, Cepat Express Sdn Bhd, which services mostly southern and central eastern routes, had the most number of outstanding traffic summonses, at 540. MORE TO COME
