Chess has long been regarded as a game of strategy and intellect, captivating minds across generations.
At the Midrand Chess Club, a fresh wave of young talent is revitalising the sport, with 14-year-old Arham Khalife leading the charge.
As an exceptional player continuously honing his skills, Arham has been earning accolades and establishing a reputation on the national stage. His recent third-place finish in the U14 category at the 2025 South African Open Chess Championship highlights his emergence as a star in South African chess.

Earlier this year, he claimed three prestigious awards: gold medals at both the JMC Crawford International Tournament and the Mzansi Chess Academy Juniors Tournament, as well as a second-place finish in the B Section at the Chess Powerhouse Youth Day Rapid. Each of these victories has fuelled his passion and confidence.
Recently, Arham competed in the South African Open, held at the University of Johannesburg during the June-July school holidays, which featured some of the country's top young chess players. The tournament consisted of five intense rounds that tested participants' strategic thinking, resilience, and psychological strength.
Arham's performance was outstanding. He tied for third place in the U14 category with eight other players, finishing with four points after a series of challenging matches. His toughest game was against Daniel Mallach, a strong competitor who had previously won the Midrand Juniors League.

Kgosimang Molefe, the club's coach, expressed pride in Arham's accomplishments, stating, 'That game [against Daniel] pushed Arham both strategically and psychologically.'
Molefe emphasised the significance of achieving third place at such a prestigious tournament, saying, 'It is a major achievement and showcases the hard work and discipline Arham has put in. I always believed in his potential to excel against tough competition.'
Arham's composure under pressure and ability to capitalise on small advantages stood out. He played mature, principled chess and demonstrated excellent tournament discipline. 'He is more methodical now. His opening choices are prepared, he calculates deeper in the middlegame, and he's grown more confident in tough positions. His overall maturity at the board has improved significantly.'

Molefe added that this achievement was a major morale boost and a clear sign that the club was on the right track. 'It shows our players can hold their own at the national level, and it gives the entire club something to celebrate and rally around.'
The club's goal is to build on this momentum, keep players sharp, and push for qualification into more elite-level events. 'Arham's performance shows that hard work and focus pay off. It sends a message to other young players in our community that they, too, can compete and win medals at national tournaments.'

Confirmed: Chiefs secure extended loan deal for Pirates' Mofokeng!

Orlando Pirates youngstar, Tefo Mofokeng will be playing for Mochudi Centre Chiefs in Botswana. Another Mofokeng, another young talented starlet from Orlando Pirates grabbing headlines. Tefu Mofokeng will be leaving Mayfair and flying off to Botswana. Pirates academy has the world on high alert. First, Mohau Nkota went to Saudi Arabia. Now, young starlet, Mofokeng (Tefo) is off to Botswana. 'Botswana Premier League side Mochudi Centre Chiefs have extended the loan deal for Orlando Pirates promising youngster Tefo 'Chippa' Mofokeng,' the report read on Goal . So, he will be plying his trade in Botswana for another season. Mofokeng joined Chiefs (in Botswana) back in February. However, they have been so impressed by his performances that they have decided to extend his loan for the whole of the next season. Chiefs signed the Bucs youngster in February this year after impressive performances with Pele Pele FC, Pirates' junior side in the ABC Motsepe League, Gauteng Division. 'Chiefs were probably excited by Mofokeng's skills and were hopeful he was going to sharpen their striking department,' 'During the 2024/25 season, Mofokeng scored crucial goals for Chiefs, and in April, he managed to score in two straight games,' they added on the same publication. As mentioned, Mofokeng is going to continue playing in Botswana next season. Additionally, Nkota went from playing in the academy to earning millions in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Relebohile Mofokeng trialled for Wolves in England last season. Furthermore, he has attracted interest in the Middle East with millions tabled for the Pirates superstar. Finally, Mbekezeli Mbokazi is now a fully-fletched Bucs first team player. Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Kaizer Chiefs signings: 'From Pirates to Europe' - Where they come from

Kaizer Chiefs have signed half a dozen players from the likes of Orlando Pirates and even Europe. Kaizer Chiefs are changing and they're changing rapidly. In fact, Amakhosi has signed SIX new players so far. Meanwhile, Chiefs have released EIGHT players. Let's take a look at all the new Amakhosi stars and where they came from. Nkanyiso Shinga (FC Alverca) Flavio Silva (Persebaya Surabaya) Ethan Chislett (Port Vale) Thabiso Monyane (Orlando Pirates) Paseka Mako (Orlando Pirates) Siphesihle Ndlovu (SuperSport United). Chiefs have signed players from all over the world. Shinga (Portugal) and Chislett (England) were signed from Europe. Meanwhile, Silva joins Chiefs from the Middle East (Indonesia). However, it is back at home where Amakhosi have everyone talking. Chiefs have recruited a trio of stars from PSL rivals. The Soweto giants signed not one but two Orlando Pirates players. Mako and Monyane are now officially Amakhosi stars. Finally, Ndlovu was signed from SuperSport United who have now been sold. So, of the SIX new signings Ndlovu is the man likely to start the most games for Chiefs. Silva will be given a fair chance at the start of the season too. However, he has come under scrutiny following below-par performances during Amakhosi's pre-season tour of the Netherlands. Meaning, he will have to perform much better if he is to become Chiefs regular striker. Meanwhile, Amakhosi are still in the market for an attacker or two. Therefore, if another striker is signed than Silva might have an even tougher start to his Chiefs career. Mako has a good chance of starting after Edmilson Dove was released. Meanwhile, Monyane is a quality player who could be rotated with Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons. Finally, Chislett faces stiff competition in the midfield with Ndlovu, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Nkonsigiphile Ngcobo, Samkelo Zwane and Mduduzi Shabalala. Therefore, I think Ndlovu will start regularly. Silva's appearances will depend on his form and who is signed next. Monyane and Mako will be rotated but Mako faces less competition at left back. Whilst, Shinga could be benched. She also placed second in the Junior Large Group Commercial and received a coveted Golden Ticket to an elite masterclass after finishing fourth in the Junior Commercial Solo. 'It was a great experience. The highlight for me was getting Gold. After I danced for this one group, I was in pain and I had to go to the first aid room. I was backstage before going to the first aid room and I heard everyone screaming and happy. I felt really good about it, I felt like I really deserved that gold,' said Peyton. On her passion for dance she said: 'Dancing is coming into a group with people that you love and sharing a talent and sharing a hobby that you all have and having a connection with everyone you dance with.' The feat however did not come easy, with daily practices even through school holidays. She encouraged other young people, 'if you want to do well, just be confident and dance like nobody's watching'. Local businesses and restaurants donated vouchers and prizes. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to hold raffles every month to raise funds. 'Survé Philanthropies gave us a very generous donation of R10,000. That money was heaven-sent. We were stranded for one night. IOL had published an article about Peyton, and my contact details were included. They saw the article, called me, and about two weeks later came back with that donation. We were very lucky.'
