Business Overview and Recent Strategic Focus
U.S. Bancorp is a diversified financial services company with operations spanning consumer and business banking, wealth management, payment services, and corporate banking. It serves consumers, businesses, and institutions across the United States, offering everything from standard checking accounts to treasury services for large companies.
Recently, the company has focused on improving operational efficiency, investing in digital banking, and expanding its payments and wealth management services. These efforts are shaped by changing customer expectations, regulatory requirements, and rapid shifts in technology that impact banking and payments activities. Core success factors for the company include maintaining strong risk and capital controls, growing noninterest (fee) income, and investing in technology to stay ahead of both traditional and new financial technology competitors.
Notable Developments and Drivers in the Quarter
During the quarter, U.S. Bancorp showed improvement in several financial performance areas, most notably in earnings per share and efficiency. Net income (GAAP) rose to $1.815 billion, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same period last year. Fee income businesses—including payment services, trust and investment management fees, and treasury management fees—now represent approximately 42% of company-wide revenue. This broad-based growth in fees was driven by merchant processing services (up 4.4%), card revenue (up 3.3%), and trust and investment management fees (up 8.3%).
Net interest income, which measures the difference between what a bank earns on loans and pays out on deposits, increased by 0.7%. However, the net interest margin—a key ratio showing profitability on banking assets—edged down to 2.66%. This drop was caused by higher competition for customer deposits and shifts toward products with higher yields. The bank also benefited from tight expense control, cutting its noninterest expenses by 0.8% year-over-year. This was achieved while making investments in technology and digital service platforms. Return on tangible common equity, a non-GAAP measure of shareholder profitability, was relatively stable at 18.0%.
Looking at loan and deposit balances, average total loans grew by 1.0% year over year, while deposits declined by 2.1%. Growth in commercial and card loans partially offset ongoing weakness in commercial real estate and residential mortgage portfolios. Deposit declines were most pronounced in wealth and corporate banking, showing a challenging deposit-gathering environment.
Credit quality metrics remained stable. Provisions for credit losses fell slightly as nonperforming assets declined to 0.44% of loans and other real estate. The allowance for credit losses was $7.86 billion, or 2.07% of loans. Although the ratio of net charge-offs—a measure of bad loans written off—remained flat at 0.59%, management noted a rise in loans past due by over 90 days, mostly due to administrative factors and disaster-related delays rather than underlying credit deterioration.
Products, Segment Results, and Key Initiatives
The Payment Services segment, covering merchant processing and card payment solutions, was a highlight this quarter. Merchant processing—services that enable businesses to accept card payments—handled $576 billion in annual global transaction volume, as reported by Elavon, U.S. Bank's merchant services payment provider, solidifying its role as a top-five merchant acquirer in the country. Initiatives included expanding Elavon, the company's payment processing unit, and integrating new card services through industry partnerships. The Consumer & Business Banking segment, providing checking, lending, and savings products, saw net income decrease 6.9% (GAAP), but achieved a sequential gain.
Business banking, corporate, and institutional clients are served through products such as corporate lending and treasury management. Profit from these operations declined 7.2% compared to Q2 2024. The Payment Services segment delivered a 12.5% increase in net income. Treasury and Corporate Support, which houses activities not attributed to other segments, reported a reduced net loss from the previous year. The company also highlighted the first fully digital, blockchain-based trade finance transaction by a U.S. bank, indicating growing investment in digital-first banking.
From a balance-sheet perspective, the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio remained strong at 10.7%. This is a regulatory metric that measures the bank's core capital strength, important for navigating potential stress in financial markets. Management continued limited share buybacks and maintained share dividends, with a declared quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share, compared to $0.49 per share in Q2 2024. The company continues to prioritize prudent capital management due to evolving regulations and market risks.
The quarter contained no material one-time items, but ongoing cost optimization—including real estate, automation, and back-office structure—remained a priority as revenue growth remains moderate.
Looking Ahead: Management Guidance and Areas to Watch
For FY2025, management reiterated guidance of 3% to 5% adjusted net revenue growth, with positive operating leverage of more than 200 basis points for the full year, as adjusted. Leadership projects mid-single-digit fee income growth. The company aims to achieve a medium-term net interest margin above 3% by 2026 or 2027, depending on market conditions. Leadership cautioned that revenue growth may lean heavily on stabilization or improvement of net interest margins and loan growth as the interest rate environment evolves.
Key watch points for upcoming quarters include the trajectory of deposit and loan balances, success of fee-generating businesses like payment services, and the impact of ongoing investments in technology. Management's disciplined expense approach gives it flexibility to match costs with any future shifts in revenue. While dividend payouts and share repurchases remain part of the long-term plan, immediate increases in capital return depend on regulatory outcomes and the broader economic outlook.
The quarterly dividend was $0.50 per share, compared to $0.49 per share in Q2 2024.
Revenue and net income presented using U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) unless otherwise noted.

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, NVIDIA, Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom and Intel
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – July 21, 2025 – announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. TSM, NVIDIA Corp. NVDA, Apple Inc. AAPL, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD, Broadcom Inc. AVGO and Intel Corp. INTC. Here are highlights from Friday's Analyst Blog: 3 Reasons to Buy Taiwan Semi Besides +61% Q2 Profit Surge Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., or TSMC, recently reported a record surge in second-quarter profit as it continues to benefit from the artificial intelligence (AI) megatrend. TSMC is also expected to grow further for three main reasons. Let's examine those reasons and what makes TSMC stock a compelling buy now. TSMC's Positive Q2 Results & Outlook Boosts Share Price On Thursday, TSMC reported that its net income surged 60.7% year over year to NT$398.27 billion in the second quarter, a record high and significantly higher than estimates. TSMC's revenues for the June quarter came in at NT$933.80 billion, up 38.7% year on year, and above projections. TSMC's second-quarter sales rose as demand for AI chips remained strong. The company's high-performance computing division, which includes AI and 5G applications, accounted for 60% of the second-quarter revenues. Strong demand for TSMC's progressive 3nm and 5nm node semiconductor chips also contributed to revenue growth. Banking on the growing demand for TSMC's advanced processors for clients, including NVIDIA Corp. and Apple Inc., the company projected third-quarter revenues between $31.8 billion and $33.0 billion, up 38% year over year. For 2025, TSMC expects revenues to surge nearly 30% when measured in U.S. dollar terms. After the recent positive quarterly results and an optimistic forecast, TSMC stock popped. TSMC's shares have outperformed the Semiconductor - Circuit Foundry industry year to date (+24.2% vs. 20.3%). 3 More Reasons to Be Bullish on TSMC Stock TSMC holds a leading position in the semiconductor industry. It controls nearly 67% of semiconductor manufacturing, giving it significant pricing power. Being the first to introduce the third-party foundry model also grants TSMC dominance in the chip foundry sector. Regarding dominance, all major players in the industry, such as NVIDIA, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and Broadcom Inc., are the key customers of TSMC. Conversely, TSMC's competitor, Intel Corp., has faced recent difficulties. TSMC also faces headwinds from President Donald Trump's tariffs. Taiwan is subject to 32% tariffs, with Trump warning of further tariffs on semiconductors. U.S. export controls also restrict TSMC's business with China. However, recently, NVIDIA and AMD received assurance from the U.S. government to ship products to China, which is a positive development for TSMC as well. Additionally, TSMC is expanding beyond Taiwan, with plans to establish manufacturing plants in Japan, Germany and the United States soon. Manufacturing a semiconductor plant is not easy; it involves a complex and cumbersome process. The technology is not only intricate but also requires significant capital investment. As a result, many advanced companies have chosen not to build their facilities and instead rely on TSMC. This high barrier to entry has helped TSMC keep potential rivals at bay. TSMC Stock to Buy Hand Over Fist While encouraging second-quarter results boosted TSMC's stock price, the company is primed for growth in the years ahead due to its competitive advantages, expansion efforts and significant barriers to entry in the semiconductor industry, where it already holds a dominant position. Brokers are also optimistic about the company's prospects. They predict TSMC stock's average short-term price target at $244.75, reflecting a 3% increase from the last closing price of $237.56. The highest target stands at $270, suggesting a potential upside of 13.7%. Additionally, the $9.54 Zacks Consensus Estimate for TSMC's earnings per share has increased 15.5% annually. TSMC, therefore, rightfully holds a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 (Strong Buy) Rank stocks here. Domino's beats quarterly sales estimate on strong U.S. demand
Domino's Pizza surpassed analysts' expectations for second-quarter U.S. same-store sales on Monday, driven by new items on the menu and promotions, amid persisting macroeconomic uncertainties, sending shares up nearly five per cent in premarket trade. The world's largest pizza chain introduced items such as the parmesan-stuffed crust pizza to its list, and attracted value-conscious consumers through deals under its rewards program. These efforts helped offset the impact from U.S. President Donald Trump's fluctuating tariff policies and the resulting trade tensions. Consumer spending has declined in recent months due to rising inflation and uncertainty surrounding Trump's policies, prompting customers to seek value offerings rather than expensive dine-out options, which has benefited pizza chains like Domino's. 'In the U.S., both delivery and carry out grew, driving meaningful market share gains,' Domino's CEO Russell Weiner said. Domino's posted a 3.4 per cent rise in same-store sales in the U.S. for the quarter ended June 15, exceeding analysts' average estimate of a 2.21 per cent rise, according to data compiled by LSEG. That marked its first beat in five quarters. The company's online sales also grew, helped by discounts and from the success of its partnership with DoorDash, which doubled its share of sales made through third-party delivery channels to roughly five per cent, according to Matt Goodman, analyst at research firm M Science. International same-store sales grew 2.4 per cent, also ahead of the estimate of 1.71 per cent growth, while quarterly revenue rose 4.3 per cent to US$1.15 billion, in line with estimates. Domino's posted quarterly earnings per share of $3.81, compared with the estimate of $3.95. The company said price hikes on the ingredient packs supplied to outlets reduced the gross margin for its U.S. company-owned stores by 2%. Verizon boosts annual profit forecast on demand for premium plans
Verizon above a trading post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, File) Verizon raised the lower end of its annual profit forecast on Monday, as strong demand for its higher-tier plans powered better-than-expected earnings in the second quarter. Shares of the U.S. telecom major rose four per cent in premarket trading. The company posted a 2.2 per cent rise in wireless service revenue as more users opted for its add-ons such as access to streaming service like Netflix. The carrier has launched price-lock promotions and broadband-wireless bundles to retain users as competition intensifies from AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as aggressive offers from broadband providers Comcast and Charter. However, Verizon posted a surprise drop of 9,000 monthly bill-paying wireless subscribers in the April-June period, reeling from user churn after price hikes in January. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting an increase of 13,000 subscribers. To drive growth in the mature U.S. telecom market, Verizon and its wireless rivals have been bulking up on fiber-optic assets that can tap growing data use by customers. Verizon in May won approval from the U.S. telecom regulator for its US$20 billion acquisition of fiber-optic internet provider Frontier, after it agreed to end its diversity programs. The sharper focus on internet services helped it posted 293,000 broadband net additions in the second quarter. Overall, Verizon reported revenue of $34.5 billion, beating estimates of $33.74 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its quarterly adjusted earnings per share of $1.22 also beat estimates. The company now expects 2025 adjusted profit to grow between 1% and three per cent, compared with zero to three per cent previously. It also raised its annual free cash flow forecast to between $19.5 billion and $20.5 billion, from $17.5 billion to $18.5 billion.
