AFL 2025; Tom Lynch ban to test Tigers forward stocks

AFL 2025; Tom Lynch ban to test Tigers forward stocks

The Australian9 hours ago
Richmond could place the club's goalkicking fortunes on a bunch of teenagers and a defender who hasn't kicked a goal all year after Tom Lynch was handed a five-match ban for striking.
Already sitting second last on the ladder with just three wins, and coming off a 68-point hiding by Adelaide, the Tigers have no clear goal square presence, with small forward Seth Campbell's 21 majors the most of anyone at the club this season.
A calf injury suffered by key forward Mykelti Lefau in his return from an ACL last weekend will cost him up to six weeks on the sidelines, causing significant front half of the ground headaches for coach Adem Yze.
Last year's No.1 draft pick, Sam Lalor, is set to return for the Tigers this week and along with fellow 19-year-old Harry Armstrong, who could return in round 18, loom as possible forward options for a team that has battled to kick winning scores all season.

Richmond is the only team in the AFL yet to kick 1000 points this season, their total of 963 being 40 points less than even the last-placed West Coast Eagles, who have only won a single game.
Yze flagged that key defender Noah Balta, who went forward late in the clash against the Crows, could be a forward prospect in Lync's absence.
Balta has kicked just 37 goals across his 111 games, and none in seven in 2025, a season impacted by a court-imposed curfew that basically limits him to day games in Victoria.
The Tigers face Geelong at Geelong this week, meaning Balta can play, and Lalor, who burst onto the AFL scene with two goals in round 1 against Carlton and has 11 for the season, should be ready to play.
'Sam passed all of his tests last week, but we made a decision that the best thing for him going forward for his long-term career was to just get a few more football exposures before we throw him back into AFL football,' Richmond high performance manager Ben Serpell said.
Sam Lalor's return is timely. Picture:'He did some extra footy training last week, and he will get through a full session tomorrow, and then we will see him out there this weekend.'
Richmond picked up Seth McDonald in the mid-season draft with a view to helping boost their forward stocks. He kicked two goals in the VFL last weekend.
Armstrong, drafted as a goalkicker having been a key forward in the under-18 competition, could be one more week away.
Despite their flailing fortunes, Yze was adamant his team would not fall off a cliff this season with eight games still to go.
'I've got no doubt that our players aren't just going to look to the end (of the season),' he said.

Dom Sheed: Adam Simpson lauds ‘special connection' with humble 2018 premiership hero

Dom Sheed's first AFL win was also Adam Simpson's first as Eagles coach. Just over a decade later, what turned out to be Sheed's last AFL win was also Simpson's last as Eagles coach. In between, Sheed iced the 2018 kick that made him a premiership hero and earned Simpson premiership coach status, with the latter lauding the 'special connection' the two share after this week's retirement announcement. Simpson was full of praise for the outgoing midfielder, saying his personality had never changed despite the life-changing goal. 'He's just such a quality person,' Simpson said on AFL 360 of Sheed, who played all bar one of his 165 games under the coach's tutelage. 'He's stayed as humble as you can be after achieving something like that.' Reflecting on Sheed's pinpoint kick from deep in the MCG pocket to give West Coast a late lead they would never surrender against Collingwood, Simpson said he 'wasn't surprised' that it had sailed through – despite not watching the moment as he focused on how his team needed to set up in the seconds that followed. 'The race at Subiaco was exactly there,' Simpson said of the south-east pocket location tying in with the raceway at their former training venue. 'We can't get them off the track (without taking shots from there), and when they come on the track, we can't get them on to do proper skills – they're just having shots from that pocket. 'So if there was ever going to be a pocket, it would be that one.' Simpson said Sheed's ascension to grand final hero almost didn't happen, with the left-footer's role in the side in late 2018 only formalised after Andrew Gaff's lengthy suspension for his hit on Andrew Brayshaw. 'It wasn't a smooth first three or four years. He actually, in the '18 season, was playing reserves football through form,' Simpson said. 'After what happened to Gaffy, when he got rubbed out for eight weeks, there became a spot available for a particular role. He came in and never looked back. 'It would have been a really interesting discussion if Gaffy was available coming into that game.'

Wallabies' simple plan to get Suaalii firing against Fiji and Lions

Ikitau was confident their partnership would continue to evolve and improve after the four Tests in the UK, adding it didn't matter what position Suaalii played, he had the talent to adapt and succeed. 'He's a natural footballer,' Ikitau said. 'He knows how to play whatever position he gets put in. But for us, it's just trying to get combinations in our training and trying to defend together, attack together … we saw on the spring tour there just the kind of plays that he comes up with.' As well as his athletic ability, Ikitau said Suaalii had shown in his four Test appearances that he was 'smart in defence and attack' and was his own harshest critic. Ikitau believes the Fijians' unpredictable, flamboyant brand of football – best illustrated by their boilover 22-15 win against Australia at the last World Cup – would be the ideal preparation for the blockbuster campaign against the Lions. 'You don't know what to expect from Fiji when you play them,' he said. 'Anything can happen. And I think with the Lions, they've got four different countries coming together and playing for the one team. 'So it's just making sure that you're ready for whatever. And it's no different with the Fiji team this week. So just preparing for whatever and just making sure that we're on our game.' Recalled lock Darcy Swain had a chance to run his eye over the Lions last weekend when he played in a Western Force side outgunned 54-7 by the tourists. Swain, who debuted for the Wallabies in 2021 and has appeared in 17 Tests, said the Lions were a level above most international teams. Loading 'It was pretty tough,' he said. 'They're a very skilful side and they're big, they're physical. They're just a really good side. 'Just think of any sort of northern hemisphere side, they're just a little bit better, obviously, because they're a combination of all four nations. They're obviously a lot better and they dusted us up.' Meanwhile, Wallabies forwards Rob Valetini and Will Skelton are reported to be in doubt for the clash with Fiji after suffering calf strains. The first Test against the Lions is on July 19 in Brisbane.
