King Charles Begged Prince William to Not 'Make the Mistake That I Made' as a Royal
Like his father King Charles, Prince William is also spending his years as a father of young kids as the heir to the throne, preparing to be monarch someday.
According to a new documentary and royal biographer Ingrid Seward, the King begged his older son to not make the same mistakes he made as a royal—particularly in terms of how he parented.
Charles's younger son Prince Harry has written about the King's parenting in Harry's 2023 memoir Spare, and how Charles put duty first, writing, 'He wasn't the kind of father who played endless rounds of tag or tossed a ball until long after dark.'It's the hope of most parents that their children do better at this thing called life than they did, and King Charles is no exception.
Particularly when it comes to parenting, the King specifically begged Prince William—his eldest son and heir to the throne—to not 'make the mistake' he did as a royal, and, in particular, as a father.
According to a new documentary William and Catherine: Putting Family First, Charles encouraged William to do just that, and what he did not do—put William's family first. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward said (via The Scottish Daily Express), 'Charles said to William, 'Please don't make the mistake that I made,' and 'I want you to enjoy your family life.''
'Charles was very insistent about this because he said, 'I was so dedicated to duty, I couldn't make way for family life in the way that I should've done'—and that's what William did,' Seward added, referring to William's wife Kate Middleton and their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Of Charles, Prince Harry wrote in his 2023 memoir Spare that 'He'd been an older dad, and I'd always felt that this created problems, placed barriers between us.' The Duke of Sussex added of his father, 'He wasn't the kind of father who played endless rounds of tag or tossed a ball until long after dark.'
But now, former royal butler Grand Harrold said, the King has changed, with Harrold saying Charles has reached 'a turning point' Harrold 'never' saw coming: 'I think for the first time ever you've got a King, who I think deep down if his boys need him, he would probably put them before the Crown,' Harrold said. 'That's what I believe, and that's the first time that would ever have happened in the history of the monarchy.'
While Charles's relationship with William remains strong—as evidenced by a rare joint appearance the two undertook together last week—the King's relationship with Harry is strained, as Harry said in a May 2 interview with the BBC that he isn't in touch with his father, but hopes for reconciliation as he doesn't know how long his father has left to live as Charles continues treatment for cancer.

Kate Middleton's ‘Ruthless Discipline' as Queen Will Line Up With Prince William's ‘Demanding' Reign Amid Reports They Could Ascend ‘Sooner Than Anticipated'
Kate Middleton is prepared to be Queen. Several royal experts have weighed in that the Princess of Wales is ready to take up duties alongside her husband Prince William when he takes the throne. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that Kate Middleton has stepped up to her role as Princess of Wales, and that has prepared her for the biggest Royal duties. 'Her emphasis on a ruthless discipline in her regimented daily routine and commitment to self-improvement has helped her,' Fordwich told the site. More from StyleCaster Prince William Accused of Being 'Pretty Demanding' Amid Reports He's Planning to 'Flex His Muscles When He's King' Princess Diana Made an Eerie Warning About Prince William Before Her Death & It Just Came True 'She divides her time meticulously between parenting, supporting the heir to the throne, and her royal duties and manages to fit in an intense workout regime,' she continued. 'Regarding her three children, she can combine tradition with a modern, more middle-class approach to family. This, on top of her dedication to duty, is seen as essential for the monarchy's relevance and continuity.' Royal author Valentine Low concurred on the statement, saying that Kate has 'developed a toughness' behind palace doors as she supports her husband. She told People, 'She has this public image of being nice and smiley. But she is strong-minded, strong-willed, and prepared to fight for what she wants and what she thinks is right.'The Princess had a hard year battling cancer, but she emerged a stronger woman once she was in remission. 'The onset of a life-threatening illness can make a person tough,' she said. Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital about how she developed thicker skin over time. 'When they have a clear goal, as Kate has, the maintaining of the monarchy and bringing up her family means the experience, although traumatic, can be used to advantage in the years ahead,' he said. 'Kate needed confidence as a public speaker, which she now has,' said Fitzwilliams. 'She is a fashion icon, which she uses to enormous advantage. And she and William are so close, as their PDA clearly shows. They are the monarchy's future. They work brilliantly as a team now, and they will continue to do so when William becomes king.' The news comes after several royal experts believed that William's reign would come 'sooner than expected.' And during the reign, we can expect a different kind of monarchy. Helena Chard told Geo News, 'Prince William's most important role is that of dad and husband. However, he is paving the way to be King sooner than anticipated. He is in tune with the public and the younger generation. He realizes that to justify the existence of the royal family, the heaviest burden will soon fall at his feet. This weight always rests on the king or queen.' In an interview with The Telegraph, the Prince William's secretary for his role as the Duchy of Cornwall, Will Bax, described William—who visits the region once every four to six weeks—as 'pretty demanding' to work with' but in a 'great' and 'ambitious' way. 'He's easy to follow because he's got great conviction and personality, and he really wears his heart on his sleeve in terms of social interest and his desire to have a positive impact in the world,' Bax said. William, 42, will be joined by Sophie, 60, when he travels to Wadebridge, Cornwall, on Friday, June 6, for The Royal Cornwall Show. Both he and Sophie are patrons of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, whose annual event features livestock competitions, food and drinks. William's father King Charles recently attended the show with Queen Camilla in 2022, where Charles was honored for becoming Duke of Cornwall 70 years ago. While there, the King saw the cattle, sheep and goats on display, and was asked to present the Livestock Inter-Breed Championship Trophies. The show, which dates back to 1793, is a popular event in the region, pulling in about 120,000 visitors every year. When they attend the show, William and Sophie are expected to visit the Royal Cornwall Food and Farming Pavilion to sample food and drinks made across Cornwall, including Cornish cheeses, jams, and preserves, as well as gins and other spirits. William will then visit the Duchy of Cornwall hub, which will promote mental health charities including Pentreath Cornwall Rural Community Charity, Georgia's Voice, Kooth, Man Down, PAPRUS and Sunrise. While the Prince is at the Duchy of Cornwall hub, Sophie will visit LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) and the Girl Guides, organizations where she serves as patron. She will also stop by the show's Cattle, Pig, Sheep and countryside area. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! Sophie and the prince have teamed up in the past, appearing together for The Royal Foundation's screening of Rhino Man, a documentary about wildlife rangers, hosted by United for Wildlife at Battersea Power Station in June 2023. Kensington Palace said at the time that Sophie, who is invested in wildlife protection, was "delighted to join the Prince of Wales at the event this evening to show her support for United for Wildlife." The bond between the duo was evident in a sweet moment last year, when Prince Edward's wife placed her hand on William's back during Trooping the Colour in June 2024. Sophie's gesture came as the royal family walked off the balcony of Buckingham Palace and into the royal residence's Centre Room. Read the original article on People

Sony's Wayne Garvie Roasts 'Ridiculous' Channel 4 In-House Plan: 'It Could Be Potentially Disastrous'
The new Channel 4 in-house productions biz is 'preposterous,' 'ridiculous' and 'potentially disastrous' for the nation's irreverent public broadcaster, according to Sony international boss Wayne Garvie. Garvie did not hold back at the Deloitte Conference this morning when queried over the future in-house biz, which is currently seeking a boss. More from Deadline BBC Director General Floats Concerning Vision Of Future Where "People Don't Care" About Nation's Oldest Public Broadcaster Sky Boss Dana Strong Raises Artificial Intelligence Copyright Concerns: "I Can't Fathom How A Small Producer Keeps Up" A24 Teaming With 'How To Have Sex's Molly Manning Walker On Women's Soccer Series For Channel 4 Instead of focusing on owning new IP via in-house, he said Channel 4, which is soon to be without a CEO and a Chair, should concentrate on a future where it comes together with the BBC. 'Those of us who run in-house production businesses know how difficult it is,' said Garvie, who oversees the likes of Doctor Who, Industry and Sex Education via Sony labels. 'If you're starting out and you don't own IP and have no institutional knowledge of how to run a production business it could be potentially disastrous for Channel 4.' Garvie variously described the plan, which came in after Channel 4 avoided privatization and will allow it to own IP for the first time in its 40-year history, as 'ridiculous' and 'preposterous.' Last month, Channel 4 said it plans to take majority stakes in third-party production companies as part of the plan to move into in-house production. Jonathan Allan, Channel 4's COO and incoming interim CEO, declined to reveal the value of the company's indie investment war chest. Channel 4 has cash reserves of £111M ($150M). 'You lose money after the first three years,' added Garvie today. 'Maybe you make money in five years if you have great people but not money that will help Channel 4 really grow.' Instead, he said Channel 4 should be thinking in a blue sky way about how it can combine with the BBC. 'We have five PSBs here in Britain, most other countries have one,' added Garvie. 'The future surely is the BBC and Channel 4 coming together and that should be focus of the new chair of Channel 4 and its CEO.' Garvie was speaking at the Deloitte and Enders Media & Telecoms 2025 and Beyond Conference after Sky boss Dana Strong and before Netflix EMEA chief Larry Tanz and UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy.
