
Hero MotoCorp Struggles in Scooter Market Despite Aggressive Launch Strategy

Hero MotoCorp, one of India's top two-wheeler manufacturers, is grappling with a surprising downturn in scooter sales in FY25, even as the broader scooter segment recorded double-digit growth. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), Hero's scooter sales dropped by 2.3 per cent, slipping from 4,00,453 units in FY24 to 3,91,419 in FY25.
This slump stands in stark contrast to the 17.4 per cent growth the overall scooter market experienced during the same period, with rival manufacturers making strong gains. Bajaj Auto saw its scooter volumes surge by 139.7 per cent to 2,77,183 units, while Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) posted a 12.4 per cent rise, reaching 2.84 million units. TVS Motor and Suzuki Motorcycle India also logged notable growth at 24.9 per cent and 14.8 per cent, respectively.
Hero's decline comes despite the company's aggressive strategy of launching several new scooter models. The Xoom 110 debuted in January 2023, followed by the Destini 125 Prime in August 2023 and the Pleasure Plus Xtec Sports in March 2024. In January 2025, Hero introduced three more models—the Destini 125, Xoom 125, and Xoom 160. But the expanded portfolio has not translated into lasting traction in the market.
While the new models briefly lifted Hero's scooter sales—showing 34.9 per cent growth in January 2025, 12.1 per cent in February, and 22.5 per cent in March—the momentum was short-lived. By April 2025, sales plummeted 43.3 per cent year-on-year, from 31,712 units to 17,978. Though the steep drop is partly due to a high base effect, the result remains starkly out of sync with the broader industry trend.
Competitors continued to gain ground in the same month. Bajaj Auto reported a 73.2 per cent increase in April scooter sales, TVS rose 23.5 per cent, and Suzuki climbed 9 per cent. Even Ather Energy, the electric scooter company in which Hero has invested, grew its volumes by 44 per cent, delivering 155,405 units.
With total scooter sales rising to 6.85 million in FY25, up from 5.84 million in FY24, and motorcycles growing at a slower pace of 5.1 per cent, the market signals a clear consumer pivot toward scooters.

EVs Are Rewiring Risk For Manufacturers
The internal combustion engine (ICE) has been steadily improving for more than 100 years, giving us cars that are almost unrecognisable from those early, groundbreaking days of the Ford Model T. This, in turn, has made driving a faster, safer, more fuel-efficient, and more enjoyable experience for everyone. Now electric vehicles (EVs) mark a fundamental shift. One that not only paves the way to innovative changes in how passenger vehicles are designed, built, and maintained, but that will also kickstart a whole new era of risk for manufacturers. Driving this transformation are three key factors, the first of which is consumer dynamics. To date, EV adoption has actually been slower than many projected with only a quarter of car buyers seriously considering going fully electric due to concerns around cost, range and charging time. This has seen the manufacturing industry double down on addressing these concerns with new models that travel further and charge faster. The second factor is battery innovation. Right now, lithium-ion is found in 90% of US EVs, but their performance and safety features don't completely meet all customer requirements. Interest in alternative designs is therefore accelerating too – from iron- and sulphur-based lithium variants to sodium-ion and hydrogen cells. All have their own advantages and disadvantages, leading manufacturers to invest in understanding how they perform in the full life cycle of a user experience. The third and final driver of change is the supply chain itself. EVs use up to three times more chips than ICE vehicles and therefore rely heavily on materials sourced and processed overseas. China alone accounts for 70% of global battery production. Add in geopolitical volatility, tariff controversies, ongoing labor shortages, and localized incidents like the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and it's clear: EV supply chains are more stretched and unpredictable than ever – requiring flexible and proactive risk mitigation frameworks to match. There are new, less familiar threats for manufacturers to counter too. While ICE and hybrid vehicles actually catch fire more frequently, EV fires tend to burn hotter and longer – with several high-profile cases making the news and rocking consumer trust. Responding to this risk requires specialized equipment and training for staff, along with a deeper knowledge of chemistry, housing, and fire suppression. Then there's cyber. EVs are, by nature, software-defined machines that are deeply integrated with networks and cloud platforms. From code-level bugs to coordinated hacks, this opens up new areas of potential vulnerability, all capable of causing costly reputational damage and liability claims. Even product recalls are changing. In contrast to ICE vehicle breakdowns, EV issues can often be fixed with over-the-air updates and patches. Yet while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) still classifies these events as recalls, the cost and customer experience are entirely different. This, in turn, forces insurers and manufacturers to re-examine the way they calculate risk along with how they structure mitigation strategies going forward. So how should the manufacturing industry respond? First and foremost, by empowering risk managers to lead in this evolving environment and become a central part of a broader, stronger, more connected ecosystem within their own companies. One that connects stakeholders across R&D, supply chain, operations, IT, and even government relations to create a comprehensive framework for analysing and responding to risk. The way manufacturers deploy data must evolve too. Unlike with ICE vehicles, firms don't have decades of EV insights to fall back on in their decision-making and planning. So instead, they should lean into forward-looking indicators, using machinery data on the shop floor to identify quality risks and limit the likelihood of product liability and recall. Leveraging smarter building data in areas like fire protection and structural soundness will also be vital, as will utilizing supply chain visibility information and scoring models for business tax. Encouragingly, much of this data is already available today; it now just needs to be viewed with a risk lens. Rather than simply present data at renewal time, manufacturers and brokers should therefore engage in an ongoing dialogue with carriers about emerging threats, evolving mitigations, and the specific steps they are taking to reduce exposure. This will help shape limits and premiums that fit the realities of their operating landscape. In fact, this ability to focus on the future is, perhaps, the most important shift of all. As EVs become an ever more frequent sight on our roads and in our factories, the passenger vehicle market will be defined by both new methods of manufacturing and new approaches to risk. The firms that lead this new era will be those with their eyes on the road ahead, not in the rear view mirror.

Honda's Harrison claims first TT win in six years
Dean Harrison won his first Isle of Man TT race since 2019 with victory in the Superstock TT on Tuesday. Honda rider Harrison overhauled Superbike TT winner Davey Todd in the two-lap sprint around the 37.7 mile course to win by 11.656 seconds. Advertisement The race had been due take place on Tuesday afternoon but wet weather postponed the race until the evening and also saw it reduced to two laps. Michael Dunlop, who won the Supersport race on Monday, finished in third. "I got the hammer down from the start," Harrison told TT Plus. "I really dug deep and the bike was really good. I've been third and second, so to get another TT win is magic. "I can't thank the team enough. It's been a long time coming, I've over the moon." With a two-lap race and no pit stops, emphasis was placed on a fast start and it was Todd who set the early pace. Advertisement The BMW rider led by 0.2 seconds by Glen Helen over Harrison, with James Hillier just ahead of Nathan Harrison and Dunlop in third. Todd's lead was up to a second at Ballaugh, and he doubled his advantage by the time he reached the Bungalow. However, it was over the Mountain that Harrison started to chip away at Todd's advantage. The Yorkshire rider pulled back a second-and-a-half to end the lap just 0.4 seconds behind heading onto the second and final lap. Harrison found 2.3 seconds on Todd in the first sector to Glen Helen, and from there he didn't look back as he moved 3.2 seconds clear by Ballaugh Bridge. Advertisement As Todd battled traffic, Harrison, with clean road in front of him, was able to extend his lead to five seconds by Ramsey Hairpin, and the final margin was 11 seconds. His final lap of 135.692mph was more than enough to claim his fourth victory at the Isle of Man TT and the popularity of his victory was evident by the cheers in the winners' enclosure as he crossed the line. It was a first win for Honda in the Superstock race since Dunlop triumphed in 2013. Dunlop held on to third after battling an electronic issue on his BMW.

2025 Acura ADX Tested: Not Exactly a Taller Teg
Small SUVs are replacing small cars as the entry point for more and more automotive brands, but the differences between them can extend beyond their form factors. At Acura, the Integra, currently $34,195 to $39,195 (not counting the $50K-plus Type S), has served as the brand's entry point. But now it's joined by the ADX, a new subcompact SUV, whose three-level lineup runs from $36,350 to $45,350. Just as the Integra shares its platform with the Honda Civic, the ADX is related to the Honda HR-V. The ADX rides on the same 104.5-inch wheelbase as the HR-V but gets its own suit of sheetmetal, sharing no body panels with its Honda sibling. It's also some six inches longer, putting it within spitting distance (1.6 inches) of Acura's larger RDX. View Exterior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver All ADX models can be had with front- or all-wheel drive—our test car, a top-spec A-Spec Advance model, had the latter. And all are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT. This is the same engine you'll find in the Integra, and while the ADX's 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque are a bit less than the Integra's 200 horses and 192 pound-feet, the output substantially betters the HR-V's 158-hp 2.0-liter four. Look outside the Honda family, though, and 190 horses looks less impressive. The Audi Q3 musters 228 horsepower, the BMW X1 xDrive28i proffers 241, the Volvo XC40 manages 247, the Lexus NX350 corrals 275, and the X1 M35i boasts 312 horsepower. HIGHS: Looks nothing like its Honda relation, nicely finished interior, well-tuned chassis. Lo and behold, the little Acura trails every one of those competitors in the sprint to 60 mph. Its 8.7-second time may be better than the glacial 9.4 seconds we measured with the all-wheel-drive HR-V, but it's well in arrears of the Acura's premium-brand rivals. Even the slowest of that aforementioned group, the Q3, buries the ADX with a 7.4-second time, and it's probably best not to talk about the X1 M35i and its 4.7-second blitz. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver The ADX also trails well behind its sedan sibling, which in our testing of an automatic-equipped model scooted to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. The ADX had the off-the-line traction benefit of all-wheel drive, but it carries 457 pounds more mass than the Integra. Therein, we surmise, lies the issue. The ADX's modest 179 pound-feet of torque is available at a low 1700 rpm, so calls for a bit more speed don't necessarily send the tach needle soaring. But when the 1.5-liter is giving its all, the ADX's slow climb up to speed is accompanied by a nasal honk of an engine note. And whether the engine is in the standard drive mode or (with a slightly different pitch) in Sport, it's vocal. We measured 78 decibels under wide-open throttle—significantly louder than the 74 decibels for the XC40 or the NX350. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver If power is wanting, fuel economy is more in line with segment norms—although here again it's well short of the Integra's numbers. The all-wheel-drive ADX carries EPA estimates of 25 mpg city and 30 on the highway (front-wheel drive bumps those up by 1 mpg). Those numbers exceed the Audi's or the Lexus's and are similar to the Volvo's—the BMWs do a bit better on the highway. In our own 75-mph highway testing, the ADX returned 29 mpg. LOWS: Honking engine note, plodding acceleration, uncomfortable rear seat. The ADX's all-wheel-drive system does not shuffle torque across the rear axle, as in the RDX and MDX. Nor can adaptive dampers be had, as in the Integra. Despite lacking that sophisticated gear, the ADX corners eagerly, guided by quick steering (2.4 turns lock to lock) with spot-on weighting. This car also erases bumps and traverses bad pavement with minimal fuss. No, it's not a funster in the manner of the low-slung, canyon-slaying Integra Type S—note the modest 0.82 g of skidpad grip from the A-Spec-specific 235/45R-19 tires. But for a compact crossover, the ADX's ride and handling should please its audience. Some small degree of customization is possible via the ADX's drive modes (which alter engine response, steering effort, engine sound, and the cluster appearance), and the Advance adds an Individual setting to mix and match. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver Inside, the ADX has a clear Acura family resemblance. Our A-Spec Advance test car was decked out in a lively red and black color scheme; an interesting off-white (Orchid) and blue two-tone combo is also available, as is a more boring all-black. The cabin features a nice mix of materials, plentiful storage, and gimmick-free physical controls. The infotainment screen isn't the biggest out there, but wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are on hand. Seating comfort is fine for those up front, less so for those in back. The issue isn't headroom or legroom—both are adequate, if not generous—it's a low seat cushion. The cargo hold is par for the course in this class. Its 23 cubic feet behind the rear seats (24 in lesser trims) places it neatly between the measurements for the BMW X1 M35i and the Volvo XC40. Same for the 54 cubic feet (or 55 in the base and mid-tier versions) with the rear seatbacks folded. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver We'll grant that subcompact-SUV form factor gives the ADX more interior room than the Integra, and its available all-wheel drive (a $2000 option on all trim levels) is something the Integra does not offer. But there are clear trade-offs in performance and fuel economy. We're glad that—for now, at least—the ADX isn't the only choice at the affordable end of the Acura spectrum. VERDICT: The entry-level Acura for those not in a hurry.
