Foreign Secretary Misri arrives in Nepal for two-day visit

Kathmandu, Aug 17 (PTI) Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Nepal on Sunday for a two-day official visit during which he will call on the Himalayan nation's top leadership to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Misri, who reached the Tribhuvan International Airport here around 9 am, is visiting at the invitation of his Nepalese counterpart Amrit Bahadur Rai.
He will call on President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and pay a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, according to foreign ministry sources.
Misri will also hold a bilateral meeting with his Nepalese counterpart Rai at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singhdurbar, later in the day, sources said.
He will also meet top leaders of major political parties including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday that connectivity, development cooperation and other issues will be discussed during his visit.
Misri will return home on Monday after wrapping up his visit.
People familiar with the matter said the main focus of Misri's engagements in Kathmandu will be on preparing the ground for Nepal Prime Minister Oli's trip to New Delhi next month.
Oli is likely to visit India around September 16, according to diplomatic sources. However, the official announcement is yet to be made. PTI SBP GRS GRS GRS GRS

Announcing his arrival, the Indian Embassy said: "Foreign Secretary of India Vikram Misri arrives in Kathmandu for an official visit, which reflects the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Nepal, and reaffirms the commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy." In a statement issued on Friday ahead of Misri's visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said: "India and Nepal share strong and friendly ties, which have seen concrete progress in recent years in diverse areas of cooperation. India attaches high priority to its relations with Nepal under its Neighbourhood First policy. Foreign Secretary's upcoming visit continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and will be an opportunity to further advance our bilateral ties." According to Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the visit, the two Foreign Secretaries will hold discussions on various aspects of the Nepal-India partnership, with a focus on connectivity, development cooperation, and other matters of mutual interest. Foreign Secretary Misri was also scheduled to call on other high-level dignitaries in Kathmandu.

He is a two-time MP from Coimbatore (1998 and 1999) and won with massive vote margins. During his stint as the Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2004 to 2007, he undertook a 93-day statewide yatra. He was also incharge of the Kerala BJP unit from 2020 to 2022) as a member of BJP national executive. When it comes to governance, he became the governor of Maharashtra in July 2024. Before that, he was the governor of Jharkhand in 2023. He also held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry. In Bihar, Rahul lets Tejashwi be in the driving seat
Patna, Aug 17 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday made it clear that in Bihar, where his Voter Adhikar Yatra was kicked off, he would like Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD to be in the driving seat. At one point of the rally, Yadav drove a jeep with Gandhi on the passenger seat. Yadav, the INDIA bloc's de facto chief ministerial candidate in the elections due later this year, joined Gandhi at Sasaram where the Yatra was flagged off and the two leaders were together till they retired for the day in Aurangabad. In his speeches, Yadav, a former deputy CM of Bihar, referred to the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha as 'hamare bade bhai (my elder brother)". For most part of the day, the two leaders sat together atop an open vehicle, waving at the crowds that stood on both sides of the road. However, at one place, Gandhi decided that they move forward in a jeep with Yadav behind the steering wheels. The picture was complete with junior alliance partners, CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya and Vikassheel Insan Party president Mukesh Sahni, settling on the rear seat. The sight was reminiscent of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which passed through Bihar last year, barely a month before the Lok Sabha polls. Yadav, on his part, seemed pleased with the way things were going. He shared a picture of himself driving along his allies, all of them his senior in terms of age, on his X handle.
