CAS upholds bans on Uruguay players after Copa America brawl
LAUSANNE, Switzerland: The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal on Tuesday by several Uruguay players and the country's football association (AUF) against disciplinary sanctions imposed by CONMEBOL following a brawl during last year's Copa America semi-final against Colombia.
The South American football governing body fined the AUF and the players for their involvement in a fight between Colombia fans and Uruguay supporters.
After Colombia sealed a 1-0 victory in the Copa semi-final, Uruguay players climbed into the stands and exchanged blows with opposition fans.
CAS dismissed the appeal to cancel or reduce the suspensions, ruling that the players' self-defence argument — they claimed to have intervened to protect family members present near the confrontation — did not constitute legitimate defence.
"The panel found that, in this case, the principle of self-defence does not apply, and that the players' conduct constituted voluntary, violent, and unjustified action," CAS said in a statement.
CAS noted that in October it accepted a request from Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and the AUF for the sanctions to be provisionally suspended.
Nunez missed two South American qualifiers in September before the sanctions were provisionally suspended. He now faces the remainder of his five-match ban and a US$20,000 (RM86,000) fine.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was handed a four-match ban, which he has served, and a US$16,000 fine.
Matias Olivera, Ronald Araujo and captain Jose Maria Gimenez were given three-match suspensions, which they have also served, and fines totalling US$12,000.
The AUF was also fined US$20,000 and players Sebastian Caceres, Brian Rodriguez, Matias Vina, Emiliano Martinez, Santiago Mele and Facundo Pellistri were each fined US$5,000. - REUTERS

Government staff scammed of RM13,000

The victim, aged around 30, received a call from an unknown number claiming to be from the Ministry of Communications and Digital, on May 27. Advertisement Ranau District Police Chief Supt Mursalin bin Mahmud said the caller alleged that the victim's phone number was involved in spreading fake messages related to investments, job offers and gambling. He said the call was then connected to another individual who was supposedly a police officer from the Perak Police Contingent (IPK) Headquarters. 'On May 29, the victim was ordered to transfer RM13,000 into an account in the name of Muhammad Azlan, supposedly for the purpose of 'account protection'. 'The victim was also ordered to send photos and personal information every three hours as a 'self-report',' he said when contacted on Wednesday. According to him, the victim finally realised that it was a scam and then lodged a report at the Ranau Police Station, Tuesday. The case is currently under investigation by police under Section 420 of the Penal Code. 'The public are advised not to panic if they receive a call from an individual claiming to be a police officer or any government agency,' he said. He added that the public is reminded not to disclose personal information, bank account numbers, identity card photos or carry out any financial transactions on instructions to make a phone call. 'The step that needs to be taken is to check the validity of the call immediately through the District Police Headquarters (IPD) or the nearest police station. Horrific Gerik crash exposes dark truth behind bus permit leasing
KOTA BARU: Thousands of express and tour buses are operating illegally nationwide using leased permits, a practice that contravenes the Land Public Transport Act 2010, the Bumiputera Express Bus Operators Association of Malaysia (PPBBM) said. PPBBM chairman Zainal Abidin Mehat said the issue of leasing public transport bus permits has been ongoing for some time. However, it only came to light following the recent fatal crash involving a tour bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) along the East–West Highway near Gerik, which claimed 15 lives. Zainal said some bus operators conduct business without any valid permit by purchasing second-hand buses and operating them under permits obtained from various other companies. This, he said, is because many bus operators, most of whom are former bus drivers, are unwilling to apply for permits due to the high upfront cost and the numerous procedures required by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) or the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). "There are even companies that own dozens or hundreds of permits and take advantage by leasing them out, whether for express or tour buses, at a rate of RM500 per month per permit, raking in tens of thousands of ringgit monthly," he said. Zainal said that the practice of leasing express and tour bus permits has been going on for years. "I often receive complaints about this issue, but it remains unresolved because there is both supply and demand in the permit leasing market. "The modus operandi involves bus operators purchasing second-hand buses over 10 years old for between RM70,000 and RM100,000, repainting them to appear new and attractive, and using them as tour or express buses. "To avoid dealing directly with APAD or MOTAC, they simply lease permits from companies offering such services, paying RM500 a month," he told Berita Harian. Zainal said that due to high demand, some bus companies that have more than 100 express or tour bus permits lease out nearly all of them. These companies retain only a few permits for their own use to avoid detection. "Imagine a company with 100 permits earning RM500 per permit every month, they can easily make tens of thousands of ringgit monthly," he said.
