Reeta Chakrabarti: ‘I love dancing in a really bad disco mum kind of way'

The Guardian15-03-2025
My parents came to the UK in 1960 from Calcutta, as it was then, in India. My father was a doctor. In Birmingham, I was often the only Indian girl in my class. There are ways that you're marked out in the playground. There was quite a lot of teasing. You had to navigate your way – you learn to be pleasing to people. That's how I coped.
The UK in the 1970s was a harder place when it came to race. I was aware of the far-right, football hooliganism, racism on the streets. On occasion, somebody, usually a man, would scowl at me or make a face, unprovoked. I sort of understood – but sort of didn't.
I absolutely loved Oxford University. It opened me up. I'm very fond of Birmingham, but it's not a place of beauty, and Oxford really is.
There weren't many British-Asian students like me. That didn't stop me having a good time. There was prejudice from certain individuals, but it was more their problem than mine.
When I started out in journalism I had more of a black-and-white view of things. Doing my job for so long has made me see the enormous complexity of everything. I've come to understand it's a very difficult world to understand.
The advice I give to people? Say 'yes' to things in your career. Even if you're quaking with fear, put a bright, brave face on. You won't regret it.
I don't like resentful people. I deliberately don't remember bad things people have said to me. If you harbour these things, you only do yourself harm.
My husband, Paul, and I met at university. I think the secret to a happy marriage is each allowing the other person to be themselves and understanding that, as you grow older together, you're going to become different people. It sounds so easy – but it's really not.
I love dancing in a really bad disco mum kind of way. That happens in the kitchen, when I'm cooking – which is not often, as my husband does most of it.
I had appendicitis, dramatically, in the autumn of 2021. I was in Rome, passed out from the pain, and was rushed to hospital. I lay in A&E for a while and couldn't get anyone to help me – I don't speak Italian. I started to think, 'Oh well, I've made it to my late 50s and Rome isn't a bad place to go.' But they sorted me out.
My greatest achievement? My three children. I've had a wonderful career. I'm about to publish a novel. But I don't put any of those things ahead of my family.
I believe in lifelong learning and developing, and in not having regrets or itches that you wished you'd scratched. Writing a novel at this stage of my life has been good for me.

I was so stressed after my dream £6k honeymoon cruise was cancelled my face COLLAPSED & was left PARALYSED

Gail Morgan, 50, suffered a Bell's Palsy attack, paralysing the muscles down one side of her face after the £6,000 cruise was postponed just prior to boarding - and then axed completely. They say, subsequently, their treatment by operator Celebrity Cruises has been "disgusting" - and they've only received a third of the value back as vouchers. Gail told The Sun: 'I was inconsolable. I broke down in tears. 'The heartbreak of losing our honeymoon and my 50th birthday trip, a holiday we had looked forward to for years, was overwhelming. 'And still, not a single word of communication from Celebrity Cruises. 'I recently completed my masters in social care, and this was also meant to celebrate my achievement. 'But the very next day, my facial muscles on the right side of my face stiffened up. 'Since then, my face has been stiff. I'm still going through it.' Upon return to the UK, a doctor's assessment confirmed that the 'emotional trauma and psychological stress' were 'direct contributing factors to the onset of Bell's Palsy'. The cruise was due to depart from Port Miami on July 20. Inside Love Island winners Kai and Sanam's lavish honeymoon in Bali Initially, the cruise was delayed by a day, before it was cancelled due to a 'technical issue' affecting the liner's speed. Morgan added: 'We're working class people from a small village in Wales. 'It took us three years to save for this, skipping out on holidays and life's little luxuries. 'This was meant to be a milestone. 'Celebrity Cruises didn't even inform us of the initial delay and then the outright cancellation. 'We were informed by strangers who overheard our conversations. 'When we finally knew that it was cancelled, we couldn't even make emergency calls and had to borrow people's phones because we had British numbers.' Morgan and Davies were issued with a credit voucher each, both totalling £2,619. However, Morgan told The Sun: 'This is not good enough. 'First of all, you can't use the vouchers together, you can only use one voucher per cruise. 'You can't use the vouchers on special offers either, forcing people like us, who are working class, to pay for more expensive cruises. 'On top of that, they said they can't reimburse us for other charges incurred, like the taxi fee to get to the hotel. 'We didn't ask for any of this, and the way they have treated us has been disgusting.' A spokesperson for Celebrity Cruises said: "Celebrity Cruises is in contact with the guest and their travel agent directly on this matter."

We tried 3D-printed fish at Edinburgh vegan restaurant and were gobsmacked

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Lots of people think going vegan means giving up comfort foods and traditional home-style dishes, but that's not the case. Especially now, with plant-based food science getting better and better, vegan alternatives to your favourite dishes are becoming easier to find and increasingly convincing. That's what brought me to Sora Diana one Saturday August 16 to try 3D printed "fish". Sora Diana, located on Causewayside in city centre serves mouth-watering vegan Italian food. Their menu includes vegan versions of Italian classics like carbonara, ravioli, pizza, and even plant-based steaks. I've been vegetarian for nearly a decade, with three years of veganism in the middle. Vegan food remains one of my favourite types of cuisine but one thing I've always missed is fish. I grew up in the United States fishing off the coast of the Jersey Shore and nothing hits more than a good fillet. When I ordered the 3D-printed fish, I was curious how similar it would be to real fish. Sora Diana is offering the dish for a limited time only while they trial the product on their menu. It comes from Revo foods, which specialises in plant-based, 3D printed "meat" products. They use cutting-edge technology to print plant-based "fish" using an edible "ink". Revo also sells "salmon" and "octopus" products, which includes tentacles and suction cups. I should begin with the slight disclaimer that I haven't eaten fish since I was 16, which was nearly 10 years ago. However, I was shocked to find that the white "fish" bore a striking resemblance to the real thing. The fillet had an uncannily fishy flavour. Even the oils had a similar mouth feel. Internally, it even had the ridges and lines of real fish and had a soft melt-in-the-mouth flavour. (Image: Edinburgh Live) I'll admit, the first bite initially feels a bit foreign but then the fishy flavour really hits and you wonder how they got it to taste that way using only plant-based ingredients The dish was paired with red and yellow tomatoes, sautéed samphire, and fluffy pita, rounding out a really delicious and hearty meal. Overall, I'd say the fillet was not exactly, 100 per cent identical in texture to fish but it was undeniably tasty and definitely the most convincing plant-based meat substitute I've ever tried. It gives a genuine fillet a run for its money and is something I would recommend to non-vegans as a delicious, well-rounded meal. Lots of us who go vegan and vegetarian didn't do so because we didn't dislike the taste of meat, so having plant based alternatives to familiar, homy recipes is comforting. (Image: Edinburgh Live) Sora Diana introduced the white fish today, Saturday, August 16 and it is available while stocks last. The Revo product may make a permanent appearance on the menu if the trial goes well, so try it while you can.

Unlike a lot of his opponents, Jake was unable to put the cake down for the count. But he saw the funny side by having a warm embrace with Logan. Paul hasn't set foot inside the ring since his laboured points victory over former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June. The former Disney actor's representatives recently held talks over a shock showdown with two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Paul and his team are hopeful the mammoth crossover clash will come to fruition and are confident of pulling off an incredible upset against AJ.
