A British backpacker was the target of a frenzied attack after refusing to pay for overpriced drinks at a bar in Thailand.
Nine bar workers have been arrested for attacking Cameron James Wilkins, 26, after he refused to pay a £460 bill for his drinks at the Diamond Karaoke Bar in Chiang Mai.
The outraged holidaymaker, from Solihull, reportedly refused to pay the gouged bill. As he was walking outside to take a taxi, the employees launched an attack.
Disturbing footage showed the workers restraining Cameron near the entrance of the venue, before others took turns kicking him.
'I'll pay in cash. I swear. I'll come to pay in cash,' Cameron repeated.
Police said they launched an investigation after video of the brutal attack emerged online.
Colonel Pratchaya Thisala said: 'The British tourist was travelling alone. According to the initial medical examination, he only sustained minor injuries, and nothing was broken.
'There is a lot of witness testimony and evidence. The security camera footage shows that an argument started inside the bar.
'The foreigner wanted to return to his accommodation first and suggested they talk again later, but the other party didn't agree. The altercation then escalated outside the bar.'
Theerasak Rattanaboontawee, 24, Siladol Charoenchai, 20, Naruerong Mueanchan, 28, Apirchart Kiatnet, 22, Adisarn Surin, 22, Sakda Tawong, 22, Santi Khamnang, 18, and Somsri Armo, 28, have been arrested.
A ninth worker, Worapoj Sukittikul, 23, called police to surrender himself, they said.
The suspects were charged with assault, operating an unlicensed entertainment venue, and selling alcohol beyond legal hours. The bar has also been closed following the incident.
Locals said the bar had been operating for only two months under new management, after the previous owner had sold the business.
Police were often called to the bar after arguments between staff and patrons, often over allegedly inflated bills.
Most of the customers were tourists, usually dropped off by hired drivers or vans who were reportedly paid with commissions by the bar.
Overcharging and adding hidden fees have become common practices in Thai tourist hotspots, where staff inflate bills to fleece cash from unsuspecting foreign visitors.
Last year, a dispute left one British tourist in a coma after a security guard at a bar in Thailand kicked him in the head.
The bouncer, who has apologised for his actions, was working alongside two others when an argument broke out between the bar's hostess and three British men.
The hostess said the men insulted her when she told them some of their bill hadn't been paid and refused to hand over any money, saying they were being scammed.
She called security and CCTV shows the tourists settled their bill, but one of them then pushed one of the bouncers, causing a brawl to break out in the street.

Abusive woman stabbed ex in heart on Christmas Day after seeing his Tinder page

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Chilling CCTV footage shows a dad-of-six clutching at his chest after his abusive ex-partner stabbed him in the heart on Christmas Day. Kirsty Carless, 33, will be jailed for life later today for murdering 31-year-old Louis Price during an attack 'motivated by anger and jealousy and fuelled by cocaine and alcohol' after seeing his Tinder profile. She tried to claim she wasn't a violent person during her trial but jurors at Stafford Crown Court were told Mr Price was considered by police to be 'at very high risk of domestic abuse' before his death. They were shown separate footage of him sobbing to police officers after he called 999 to report another attack by Carless just weeks earlier, saying: 'It's f****** embarrassing… it can't keep happening, man.' In a witness statement after the incident, Mr Price said the relationship, which started in 2021, had been 'on the whole, abusive', that she had stopped him doing things he liked, such as playing football and had physically abused him. His friend, Demi-Louise Deakin, told jurors he had confided in her that he was 'scared of Kirsty' and feared 'something bad would happen' if he did not leave her. The court heard Carless messaged Mr Price the day before his death on December 25 last year saying: 'I hate u… I wish you was dead.' She spent that evening at the pub drinking double vodka and cokes with a male friend before going back to his home and having sex. But prosecutor Jonas Hankin KC told jurors 'things changed' when a friend sent her a screenshot of Mr Price's Tinder profile. Carless then left the male friend's home, took a taxi back to her house, where she picked up a kitchen knife and got another taxi to Mr Price's parents' address in Elm Road, Norton Canes, where she expected to find him with a woman. Mr Price's relatives wept at CCTV showing her running up the front path into the house and then 'stalking' him around the garden. He was later found with a single stab wound to the chest on the conservatory floor. Carless had called Mr Price 45 times between 2.15am and 2.44am while she waited for the taxi to take her to the address where he had been staying since their relationship ended. The only break in what Mr Hankin called the 'barrage' of calls was when she rang the cab firm to check where her taxi was. After arriving at the address, Carless asked the taxi driver to wait outside while she went into the property to stab Mr Price at around 3am. The taxi driver reported that around 30 seconds after Carless let herself into the property with a key, he heard a 'very loud and prolonged' scream from a man and that he 'sounded scared'. Less than two minutes after arriving at the scene, Carless was 'anxious and sweating' as she got back into the taxi and demanded the driver take her to her parents' home, where she admitted what she had done and 999 was called. More Trending 'The evidence shows, the prosecution say, that Kirsty Carless was manipulative, emotionally volatile and jealous,' Mr Hankin said. 'Her harmful use of alcohol and cocaine worsened her behaviour, and the effects of intoxication intensified the negative traits of her personality.' Carless was found guilty of murder and possession of an offensive weapon by the jury of seven men and five women after around a day of deliberation on Wednesday. She was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by a majority of 11 to one in connection with an incident in November 2024. British brother and sister, 11 and 13, drown off Spanish beach

A British brother and sister aged 11 and 13 have drowned off a beach on the north-eastern coast of Spain. Emergency services were called to Llarga beach in Salou, near Tarragona, shortly after 8.45pm local time on Tuesday evening, Catalonia's Civil Protection agency said. The children's father, who had also entered the water, was rescued alive by the services. Local police, medical and fire services all attended the incident, while a team of psychologists were also at the scene to assist the victims' family. The children, who were swept away from the beach by powerful currents, received immediate treatment but died at the scene, according to local media. Their father remains in hospital after being pulled from the water unconscious, it was reported. Catalonia's Civil Protection agency initially said two brothers died, but Jose Luis Gargallo, the head of the local police force in Salou, later said it was a brother and sister. At a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Gargallo told reporters: 'There were three people who were having serious difficulty getting out of the sea. 'There was a father with his son and daughter, of British nationality. 'When they got out, both of them, the boy and girl, aged 11 and 13, showed no signs of life. 'Attempts were made to resuscitate them with CPR, but they were unsuccessful. 'The father, fortunately, was able to be saved. He had swallowed a lot of water, he was exhausted, very fatigued, but the father was able to be saved thanks to the emergency services.' A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.' The deaths come after several other British people died while abroad in southern Europe this month. Scots Gary Kelly, 19, and Evan Thomson, 26, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza, while King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Liasu, 27, both from Ipswich, died after drowning in a hotel swimming pool in Albufeira, Portugal. Woman who threatened to carry out 'another Dunblane' fined

Rennie took to the popular social media app on November 10 last year and shouted at the camera 'I hope a terrorist blows up' the schools in Prestonpans and Musselburgh and that 'children will die'. The shocking social media footage was recorded by a concerned member of the public who was watching the livestream and reported the incident to the police. Rennie was subsequently arrested and charged, and she pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by uttering threats to blow up a school and make reference to the Dunblane massacre when she appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in December last year. Read More Sentence had been deferred and Rennie returned to the dock for sentencing on Monday, where Sheriff Frances Gill issued her with a fine of £335. Previously, the shocking TikTok footage was played to the court and showed a wide-eyed Rennie, of New Street, shouting at the camera and stating: 'I'll get fireworks and blow up your school.' She was heard to say: 'It'll be another Dunblane, bang, bang, bang, bang. I'll go to the school and blow it up. 'I hope a terrorist blows up the [Musselburgh] Grammar School and the Pans school [Preston Lodge High School] for doing that to my f***ing windows. 'I can say that when kids do that to my windows and come here every f***ing night they will die. 'Your children will f***ing die for smashing my f***ing windows cos I'll blow all the f***ing bairns up, blow them up. 'Blow every single one of them up cos you don't deserve to be living today or walk and breathe. 'They don't deserve to breathe this world. They don't deserve to be here.' Following the TikTok rant, social media users described Rennie's comments as 'despicable' and 'horrendous'. One said: 'I can understand her being angry but to mention the Dunblane murders in that way is totally despicable. She deserves everything she gets for saying that.' A second user said: 'This is totally out of order. What kind of person says stuff like that about innocent children dying? 'These comments are totally horrendous and I am glad she has been arrested.' A third added: 'I hope they throw the book at her for what she said about those poor wee children. 'What kind of person says that she hopes children will die and that she hopes a terrorist blows up a school? 'She sounds like she needs medical help.' The Dunblane massacre took place at the town's primary school near Stirling and saw gunman Thomas Hamilton kill 16 pupils and one teacher, and injure a further 15 others, on March 13, 1996. Hamilton then killed himself and the incident remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history. Rennie pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by repeatedly uttering threats to blow up a school, making intimidating gestures and making a reference to the Dunblane massacre via a TikTok livestream at her home address on November 10 last year.
