Honda latest to sign as LA Olympics sponsor deals gain pace
STORY: The race to sign sponsorship deals for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is heating up.
On Monday, Japanese auto giant Honda was the latest to say it had signed on the dotted line.
It will be the official automotive partner for the Games and Team USA, providing a fleet of vehicles for athletes.
Honda will also partner with the U.S. team at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
LA28 President Casey Wasserman hailed the deal at a news conference:
'Honda's LA roots make this partnership even more meaningful, as we work to deliver a Games that will make Angelenos proud.'
With the deal, the LA Games has now passed $1.5 billion in total sponsorship agreements.
That follows a flurry of deal making in the first half of this year.
Officials at LA28 - the private, non-profit company organizing the Games - told Reuters they were confident of hitting a target of $2.5 billion.
That would more than double the deals done for the Paris Olympics last year.
But it wouldn't beat the $3 billion record set by Tokyo 2020.
LA28 has announced a half dozen deals so far this year.
That includes making Archer Aviation its official air-taxi provider and naming analytics firm Snowflake as its data partner.
LA28 has a roughly $7 billion budget for the event.
Besides domestic sponsorship deals like the one with Honda, it also gets money from the International Olympic Committee and its sponsors.
Other revenue sources include ticket and merchandise sales.
The 1984 LA Olympics turned a profit and became a model for future Games.
However, many subsequent host cities - including Sydney, Athens and Rio de Janeiro - blew way past their budgets.

NBA working on plan for US-vs.-world format at All-Star Game next season, AP source says
Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The NBA is working on a plan to turn next season's All-Star Game into a U.S.-vs.-world competition, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday. It remains unclear how the format will work, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league has not made any final determinations. Speaking to Fox Sports 1 earlier Wednesday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver — who has talked about such a game on multiple occasions — was asked if U.S. vs. the world is possible. 'Yes,' Silver said. Silver addressed the idea on March 27 as well at the league's most recent board of governors meeting, when he revealed that the NBA was scrapping the All-Star mini-tournament format that was used this season. At that time, the AP reported that the 2026 game — to be played Feb. 15 in Inglewood, California, just past the midpoint of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics — will be moved from its traditional prime-time Sunday night slot to one that starts on Sunday afternoon. That's happening because the game will be aired on NBC under the terms of the new 11-year media rights deals that kick in next season. NBC is also the Olympic broadcaster in the U.S. So, NBC could show Olympic events in the morning and early afternoon, then the All-Star Game, then have prime-time Olympic programming. The move comes on the heels of a popular tournament, the 4 Nations Face-off, that essentially took the place of the NHL All-Star Game this year, as well as strong competition at the Paris Olympics, where the Americans won a fifth consecutive gold medal by rallying past Nikola Jokic and Serbia in the semifinals, then topping host France and Victor Wembanyama in the title game — behind a barrage of late 3-pointers from Stephen Curry. 'What better time to feature some form of USA against the world?' Silver said on FS1. 'I'm not exactly sure what the format will be yet. I obviously paid a lot of attention to what the NHL did, which was a huge success. ... But also, going back, last summer, our Olympic competition was a huge success.' There is one big challenge regarding any U.S.-vs.-world format. About 70% of NBA players are American, while 30% are international, so it would in theory be easier for an international player to make the All-Star team — if the rosters are the same size. International players, when asked at this year's All-Star Game if they would want a U.S.-vs.-world matchup, sounded enthusiastic. 'I would love to. My opinion is that it's more purposeful,' Wembanyama said back in February. 'There's more pride in it. More stakes.' Added Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo, who's from Greece: 'I would love that. Oh, I would love that. I think that would be the most interesting and most exciting format. I would love that. For sure, I'd take pride in that. I always compete, but I think that will give me a little bit more extra juice to compete.' The latest format for the All-Star Game — a four-team, three-game mini-tournament in San Francisco with the first team to 40 points winning each — was a miss. It came after years of the league asking players for a more competitive game. The 211-186 final score at Indianapolis in 2024 was the last straw, and the league — for one year, anyway — thought the tournament was the answer. ___ AP NBA: recommended

Nissan (NSANY) CEO Says Deep Cost Cuts Will Revive Struggling Automaker
Nissan (NSANY, Financials) is launching a sweeping restructuring plan to address years of declining sales and chronic overcapacity, according to new CEO Ivan Espinosa. In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Espinosa said the company's near-term focus is internal: We are convinced that the plan is enough and robust, he said, pointing to a multi-year effort that includes deep cost reductions and operational resizing. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 6 Warning Signs with NSANY. The plandubbed Re:Nissancalls for the elimination of 20,000 jobs and the closure of seven out of 17 global manufacturing plants by March 2028. Espinosa, who took over in April, warned the problems at the automaker were structural and long-running. This is a problem that did not start two years ago, he said, adding that Nissan's aggressive expansion targets from nearly a decade ago were never met. Nissan had once aimed for 8 million units in annual sales, but peaked at 5.6 million in 2016 and is now tracking around 3.3 million to 3.4 million units per year. Espinosa said the company would reduce both fixed and variable costs to reset its operations. The Japanese automaker also continues to face stiff global competition from Chinese rivals and pressure from a slow transition to electric vehicles. Compounding the challenge are new U.S. tariffs, including a 50% levy on global steel and aluminum, introduced by President Donald Trump and expected to tighten further when a temporary reprieve expires in July. A proposed tie-up with Honda (HMC, Financials) was also scrapped earlier this year, ending hopes of creating what would have been the world's third-largest automaker by volume. Nissan's Tokyo-listed shares have fallen 24% so far in 2025. The company says it is now focused on aligning output with real demand and improving profitability through reduced overhead and better capital discipline. Check insider trades for Nissan.
