How much will you earn if you invest Rs 5 lakh now?
For risk-averse investors looking for guaranteed returns, fixed deposits (FDs) remain the go-to investment option. Banks are on a spree to reduce the FD interest rate (after the Reserve Bank of India cut the repo rate). The government, on the other hand, has not reduced the interest rate on the small savings schemes, including the Post Office Time Deposit (POTD), yet. If you are looking to book fixed deposits at the highest interest rate, then which one is better in 2025? Here is a detailed comparison to help you make an informed decision.Currently, Post Office 3-Year Time Deposit offers an interest rate of 7.10% per annum, compounded quarterly and paid annually. The current interest is valid till June 30, 2025. For the next quarter (July-September), the government will review the interest rate and can change it.It is a government-backed scheme offering sovereign guarantee, making it one of the most secure investment opportunities available. Post Office Time Deposits provide peace of mind with guaranteed returns and no chance of default. However, the Post Office FD does not provide special rates for senior citizens, and the interest is paid annually. There is no option to get interest from the Post Office FD on a cumulative basis, i.e., at the time of maturity. In comparison, several private banks still offer higher interest rates on fixed deposits. DCB Bank RBL Bank , and YES Bank lead the pack with 3-year FDs offering 7.50% per annum, followed by Bandhan Bank and IndusInd Bank at 7.25% per annum, and Canara Bank at 7.20% per annum. Bank of Baroda also slightly edges out with a 7.15% interest rate per annum. On the other hand, many major banks, including Axis Bank ICICI Bank , and Kotak Mahindra Bank , are offering 6.90% per annum on 3-year FDs for general citizens. This is 20 basis points lower than the interest rate offered by the Post Office FD. Several public sector banks such as SBI PNB , and Indian Bank also offer between 6.25% and 6.75% to the general public. This makes the Post Office FD more attractive in comparison. While the difference in returns may seem marginal over three years, the Post Office's government backing provides an additional layer of safety, especially for conservative investors.Source: Paisabazaar as on April 30, 2025If you invest Rs 5 lakh in the Post Office FD at 7.10% per annum (compounded quarterly), the maturity amount after 3 years will be approximately Rs 6,17,538. This gives you total interest earnings of Rs 1,17,538 over the period. Now, if you invest the same amount in banks offering lower rates, such as SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, or Kotak-all offering around 6.90%, the maturity amount would be about Rs 6,14,598, resulting in Rs 1,14,598 interest. That's nearly Rs 2,940 less than the Post Office FD.On the other hand, banks offering higher interest rates, such as DCB, RBL, and YES Bank at 7.50%, would give you a maturity value of approximately Rs 6,24,487, or Rs 6,949 more than the Post Office FD. Similarly, Canara Bank at 7.20% would give around Rs 6,19,911, slightly higher than the Post Office return. In summary, if you invest Rs 5 lakh:Post Office FD (7.10%): Rs 6,17,538Most large banks (6.90%): Rs 6,14,598Top private banks (7.50%): Rs 6,24,487

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Friday, PGFI declared the commencement of construction work and booking. At the presser, Roy said they were planning to start work on another real estate project in the city this year. The group had announced at its AGM last year its plans to enter the real estate segment. "Our RERA registration was completed last month and 60% of bookings are in process. The total project cost is Rs 500 crore and a portion of the funding may be through a bank loan. This project is IGBC gold pre-certified as it will have EV charging bays, a compactor, water harvesting and solar panels," Roy said. Coming up on 2.6 acres of land, the project will have two residential towers, which will include a total of 71 luxury units. "The commercial side of the project will include a mall and office spaces. We will lease out the commercial spaces," he said. Supriyo Sinha, executive director, business transformation and corporate strategy of the group, said the project had been master-planned by Singapore-based architects. Four-lane spur route to connect B'khand e-way to Chitrakoot
Lucknow: A 15-km-long four-lane spur route will be constructed to link Bundelkhand Expressway to Chitrakoot. The greenfield expressway would span between Gonda and Ahmadganj towns in Chitrakoot and would be completely access controlled, officials said. The spur route would come up as a second option for commuters and transporters who would take up to land in defence corridor in Chitrakoot. Currently, Bundelkhand Expressway originates in Etawah and terminates near Bharatkoop area in Chitrakoot. The expressway will be designed to facilitate movement of motor vehicles at a maximum speed of 120km per hour according to road safety measures. It is estimated that the expressway would cost close to Rs 515 crore. The right of way of the carriageway will be 110 metre while land would be left adjacent to the 15-km long high speed route to add one lane on the either side to upgrade the four-lane expressway to six-lane in future. According to the detailed project report prepared by UPEIDA (Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority), 167 hectare of land will be required to shape up the project. It is crucial to create a spur route to connect the 296-km long Bundelkhand Expressway with Chitrakoot as the district is a part of the UP defence industrial corridor. "To lure investors and entrepreneurs in the region, it is important to provide connectivity link between Chitrakoot and the existing expressway," a senior officer from the authority said. UPEIDA has already initiated the process of awarding the 70 plots that have been developed in the Chitrakoot node of the corridor to defence manufacturing and technology companies. "The reserved rate for one sq mt of land has been pegged at Rs 631 at present. Providing better connectivity and accessibility is crucial to attract investments and the spur route would connect the Chitrakoot defence node directly to Bundelkhand Expressway," the officer said. Answer to Chandigarh-Mohali traffic woes, IT City-Kurali bypass corridor to open by Aug 15
1 2 3 Mohali: After years of anticipation and a few bumps along the way, the IT City–Kurali bypass corridor is finally nearing completion — and it's set to open on Aug 15. Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed the update following a review meeting with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This six-lane, access-controlled expressway, part of the Bareilly–Ludhiana Expressway (also known as the Ambala–Kurali Expressway), is poised to transform travel across the region. Stretching 31.23 km, the corridor will offer a signal-free alternative to Mohali's congested Airport Road, easing traffic and improving connectivity from Delhi to Himachal Pradesh, interior Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. It is also expected to reduce congestion on key urban routes in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Zirakpur. The corridor once completed will be inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister. "The project is already 80% complete," said DC Mittal. "Though originally planned to open by June 30, some unavoidable delays have pushed the launch to Independence Day. NHAI officials have assured us that the remaining work will be completed on schedule." Estimated to cost around Rs 1,525 crore, the project saw Rs 763 crore earmarked for land acquisition and Rs 762 crore for construction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sunteck Presents Luxury 2 & 3 BHK in Mira Road Sunteck Sky Park Learn More Undo A significant delay occurred in 2023 when the project was stalled for nearly eight months due to protests by landowners over compensation rates. In 2023, the project was put on hold for nearly eight months as landowners were protesting against the rates being offered for their land. A total of 450 acres was acquired across 28 villages, including 21 in Kharar tehsil and 6 in Mohali tehsil. The project is part of NHAI's Greenfield initiative, launched after scrapping the earlier Kharar–Banur–Tepla road plan in 2019 due to escalating costs.
