NEW DELHI: With India and England preparing for a series-defining fifth Test at The Oval, the cricketing world has been rocked by an off-field controversy involving India head coach Gautam Gambhir and pitch curator Lee Fortis.
The tension boiled over during India's practice session on Tuesday, when Gambhir reportedly clashed with Fortis over pitch access and conditions. In a heated exchange, Gambhir was seen pointing at Fortis and saying, 'You don't tell us what we need to do.'
The situation escalated to the point where India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had to intervene and pull Fortis aside to de-escalate the confrontation.

The sentiment found support from former India wicketkeeper and current mentor of Outer Delhi Warriors, Parthiv Patel.
Speaking at the jersey launch for the Delhi Premier League (DPL) Season 2, Patel didn't mince words: 'It's frustration for England. I have my sympathy for them. Gautam has every right as coach to see the pitch. It's unfortunate what happened. It is entitled behaviour of the English.'
Patel also took a moment to praise India's young wicketkeeper-batters.
On Rishabh Pant, he said, 'When he met with an accident, no one knew if he could walk again.

Then he made a comeback. That was inspiring. The way he batted despite injury is incredible. Having respect in the dressing room is important. He has earned that.'
He also lauded Dhruv Jurel's progress: 'Dhruv Jurel has stepped in very well. Dhruv Jurel did very well last year against England. It's a good opportunity for him now.'
With Arshdeep Singh likely to make his debut, as confirmed by TimesofIndia.com on Tuesday, and the pitch controversy still simmering, the final Test, set to start on Thursday, promises to be a dramatic finish to a gripping series.

'Did not expect such big reaction from him': Prasidh on how he unsettled a usually composed Joe Root at The Oval

Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna and English batter Joe Root were involved in a heated back-and-forth on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test. AFP Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna enjoyed the back-and-forth he had with Joe Root on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test. Following the end of the the pacer revealed that he took the onus to provoke the ire of England's batting general. Prasidh and Root indulged in a heated confrontation that required interventions from the umpires. The usually calm and composed Root lost his cool when Prasidh hurled something at him following a boundary in the 22nd over. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Prasidh Krishna on heated banter with Joe Root Krishna's words did not sit well with Root, who showcased his animated side to the Indian pacer. After the culmination of the day, Prasidh made it known that it was nothing but just a banter between the two 'good mates' that comes within the confines of the game. 'Well, it was a very small thing. I think it was just a competitive edge among us that was coming out. Both of us are good mates off the field. It was just a little bit of a banter, and both of us enjoyed it,' said Prasidh in the post-day press conference. The Karnataka pacer further stated that bringing out a reaction from Root was not an accident; rather the act was carried out with a purpose. 'That was also the plan. But I didn't really expect a couple of words that I said to get such a big reaction from him. But like I said, I love the guy that he is. He's a legend of the game. 'And for him to come out there, it's great when two people are out there wanting to do their best,' said Praisdh who took a four-wicket haul alongside Mohammed Siraj to script India's impressive comeback after the onslaught of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley in the first session. Prasidh further said that trading barbs with the opposition batter tends to get the best out of him. 'I try and enjoy bowling if it means that I have a bit of a chatter with the batsman. And it does help me when the batsman also is, I can get under the nerves and get a reaction from him. And I think I was just running in well,' said the lanky fast bowler. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Prasidh on how bowlers readjusted after morning beat-down As India suffered a clobbering at the hands of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the morning session, the bowlers decided to brush aside the beating and worked on improving. 'As a team we knew what happened before lunch and the three fast bowlers, I think we got together in a small corner and decided, what's happened has happened. 'And all of us know what we need to be doing and we just said, every time we are on the field, at the mark, we trust each other enough, go speak to each other, tell them if you're not on the right track, and just make sure you're bowling the right lines and take it from there. 'And as a team as well, we spoke about the same thing. Like, if the next three, two hours, if we can show some body language, I think it's going to make a big difference and it made a big difference,' he said. The 29-year-old stated that when the chips were against them, they concentrated on getting the basics right and reaped the results in the form of wickets. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I think they are playing a lot of shots and as a bowling unit, it's very hard for us to keep bowling the same areas, knowing they're going to do all kinds of things and try to score runs. But that's the challenge in itself. 'If you can still come there and know what your lengths and lines are and keep bowling the same good balls again and again, I think it's a matter of time. And that's the challenge, to be able to bowl the good lengths in spite of the aggressive intent of the batsman.' India ended the day at 75/2 after 18 overs, taking a lead of 52 runs. Jaiswal and Akash Deep are currently in the middle. A topsy-turvy day for both teams has set the tone for a thrilling Day 3.

Chandigarh's ‘Swayam' self-defence academy shut down, training now limited to schools

1 2 Chandigarh: In a concerning development for women's safety initiatives in the city, Chandigarh Police's renowned 'Swayam' self-defence academy, which empowered thousands of young girls and women over the past seven years, has remained shut since Aug 2024. The closure marks a significant shift in how self-defence training is now being imparted across Chandigarh. Launched in 2017 with the aim of equipping girls with physical and mental tools to defend themselves, 'Swayam' quickly became a symbol of empowerment in the city. Through martial arts, Wushu, and other practical self-defence techniques, the programme reached every corner of the city, from economically weaker sections to schools, colleges, and the IT sector. Between 2017 and 2024, a total of 978 self-defence programmes were conducted, training 1,33,471 girls and women. Alongside this, 739 awareness programmes were held, reaching 92,560 participants. In total, the initiative reached 1,717 groups with a combined 2,26,031 attendees, making it one of the most expansive public safety training efforts in the region. Under the 'Swayam' banner, participants didn't just learn to protect themselves, many went on to excel in sports and competitions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Yaroslavskaya Oblast - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo From 2018 to 2024, girls trained through the program brought home 917 medals, including 319 gold, 298 silver, and 300 bronze, even clinching 3 gold and 1 silver medal at international levels. However, since the academy's closure in Aug 2024, the format of the programme has been scaled down. Now, training is being conducted only in schools by police personnel, raising concerns about accessibility and outreach, especially for those outside the formal education system. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said, "Around 1,500 girls have been trained under this programme so far this year." While the commitment of the police force to continue the training is evident, the absence of a dedicated academy limits the programme's scale and impact. Players have expressed disappointment over the academy's closure, calling for its revival. Many fear that without a centralised hub for structured training, the consistency and quality of the programme could suffer. As Chandigarh continues to promote safety and empowerment for women, the future of 'Swayam' now hangs in the balance, a once-celebrated initiative now functioning only in fragments.

Amari Cooper fooled the internet as fake retirement post sends fans into chaos (Image via Getty) A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) recently claimed that Amari Cooper had retired from football. The post rapidly caught internet attention. One parody account purporting to be ESPN reporter Adam Schefter shared it. The message had been viewed over 250,000 times in a few hours, which puzzled supporters. Amari Cooper has not declared his retirement despite the excitement. He is still a free agent and hopes for the ideal squad to contact. Here is what started the gossip and where things stand today. Amari Cooper shuts down rumors of retirement Born on June 17, 1994, Amari Cooper of Alabama was picked fourth overall in the Raiders' 2015 NFL Draft. He collected seven 1,000-yard seasons and five Pro Bowl nods with the Raiders, Cowboys, and Browns. In October 2024, he was moved from Cleveland to the Buffalo Bills. In eight games for Buffalo, he concluded the 2024 season with two touchdowns, 20 catches for 297 yards. On August 1, 2025, online fans saw a post, timestamped around 10:47 a.m., from a parody account claiming Cooper retired. Todd Archer, who reports for ESPN on Cowboys news, retweeted that post, helping it reach over 250,000 views in under four hours. News outlets confirmed the story was false: Cooper has not retired. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 60 Year Old Actress Reveals 3 Foods That Help Her Look & Feel Years Younger Terra Marre Learn More Undo He remains an unrestricted free agent and is still looking to keep playing. Teams in need of veteran depth at wide receiver are reportedly interested. The Dallas Cowboys have been linked to a possible reunion, as they did not draft any receivers in 2025 and could use experience behind CeeDee Lamb. The Buffalo Bills may also look into Cooper's comeback following the 2025 draft, which would reduce their receiving depth. Writers and experts, meanwhile, note his potential match with teams like the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, which would gain from his red zone presence and leadership. Sources say Cooper is still training and open to offers before or during training camp. He hasn't ruled out playing again even as teams make rookie moves and depth charts shift. Amari Cooper did not retire. He continues to be a free agent, still looking for possibilities in the NFL. Though a fake post started the internet rumor, facts prove he still trains and looks for the perfect team to call.
