Egypt Welcomes Election of Sidi Ould Tah as African Development Bank President

Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation of Egypt, extended her warm congratulations to H.E. Dr. Sidi Ould Tah on his election as the new President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group. The election took place during the Bank's Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, marking the beginning of Dr. Ould Tah's five-year term at the helm of Africa's premier development finance institution.
The Minister welcomed the appointment, describing it as timely and significant for the continent. 'We wish the AfDB President success in supporting Africa's development journey, which is undergoing a crucial phase,' she stated.
Dr. Ould Tah, a seasoned Mauritanian economist with over 35 years of experience in African and international finance, was elected by the Bank's Board of Governors — comprising Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors from the AfDB's 81 regional and non-regional member countries.
H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized that Dr. Ould Tah assumes leadership of the Bank at a time of mounting challenges for Africa, including the ongoing impacts of climate change, global economic volatility, and the growing pressures on multilateralism amid protectionist global trade trends. She expressed full confidence in his ability to steer the Bank forward and contribute to the realization of the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Highlighting his decade-long leadership of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Dr. Al-Mashat noted the significant achievements under Dr. Ould Tah's tenure. These included quadrupling BADEA's balance sheet, achieving top-tier credit ratings — including an Aa1 rating from Moody's and AAA from Japan's JCR — and advancing strategic development initiatives in food security, energy transition, and infrastructure.
The Minister also voiced Egypt's commitment to deepening its partnership with the African Development Bank Group in the coming period. 'We look forward to strengthening cooperation with the AfDB to support our national development priorities and to empower the private sector, especially as we focus on resilience and sustainable growth,' she said.
In her remarks, Dr. Al-Mashat extended appreciation to outgoing President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina for his decade of service (2015–2025), during which the AfDB significantly expanded its footprint across Africa, including deepening collaboration with Egypt on infrastructure, energy, and policy support.
The African Development Bank Group consists of three entities: the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Development Fund (ADF), and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF). The Group comprises 81 member countries, including 54 African regional and 27 non-regional member states.
With this new chapter under Dr. Ould Tah's leadership, Egypt reaffirms its commitment to supporting Africa's development vision and enhancing its active role in international financial cooperation frameworks.

Madbouly witnesses alliance signing between Arab Contractors, China's CSCEC
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed the signing of a cooperation protocol between Egypt's Arab Contractors Company and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), establishing a strategic alliance to implement major projects in Egypt and across the African continent. The agreement was signed by Hassan Mostafa Kamel, Senior Vice Chairperson of Arab Contractors, and CSCEC Chairperson Zheng Xuexuan. The ceremony was attended by Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; Dong Jian Guo, China's Vice Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development; Abdel Khalek Ibrahim, Assistant Minister of Housing for Technical Affairs; Hesham Sheta, Chairperson of INCOME (CSCEC's representative in Egypt); and Heba Abou El-Ala, Vice Chairperson of Arab Contractors. Following the signing, Prime Minister Madbouly affirmed that the protocol reflects deepening strategic ties between Egypt and China, highlighting expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors. He emphasized that the current momentum in Egyptian-Chinese relations provides a strong foundation for advancing joint initiatives and shared interests. Housing Minister Sherif El-Sherbiny described the agreement as a key outcome of Egypt's recent high-level visit to China, which included extensive meetings with Chinese officials. During the visit, the proposed collaboration between CSCEC—one of the world's largest construction firms—and Arab Contractors—Egypt's leading state-owned construction company—was advanced to capitalize on their shared expertise and regional reach. In a related development, Prime Minister Madbouly also attended the signing of a comprehensive operation and maintenance agreement for the Central Business District (CBD) in Egypt's New Administrative Capital. The agreement, signed between the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and an Egyptian-Chinese alliance represented by Horizon Management and Operations Company, aims to ensure world-class service delivery and infrastructure sustainability. The agreement was signed by Amin Ghoniem, NUCA Vice President for Real Estate Affairs, and Qi Zhang, Managing Director of Horizon Management and Operations Company. Minister El-Sherbiny explained that the agreement introduces a modern 'Cost + Margin' management model—balancing service quality with operational sustainability. It enables the state to maintain full oversight through budget controls and regular reviews of technical and financial performance. The agreement covers the maintenance and operation of critical infrastructure such as electricity and water networks, fire safety systems, and other essential facilities. It also includes cleaning, security, landscaping, and environmental monitoring services. All operations will adhere to strict technical specifications and legal standards, with ongoing performance monitoring and financial oversight. El-Sherbiny noted that this approach reflects a shift toward integrated, high-efficiency urban management aligned with Egypt's vision for modern, sustainable cities. He stressed that the agreement sets a new benchmark for managing public utilities, protecting state investments, and delivering services that meet the expectations of residents, visitors, and investors in the CBD. He added that the contract underwent rigorous institutional review, overseen by a ministerial committee tasked with ensuring full compliance with legal and technical standards throughout the pre-contract and implementation phases. 'This marks a pilot model for smart, integrated urban management that we aim to replicate across the New Administrative Capital and other new cities,' El-Sherbiny concluded. 'It represents a shift from traditional service models to sustainable frameworks based on performance, accountability, and governance.'

Al-Azhar Grand Imam Receives Gambian Foreign Minister to Discuss Expanding Educational, Religious Cooperation
Mohamed Mandour Dr. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, received Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gambia, at Al-Azhar headquarters to discuss ways of boosting Al-Azhar's religious and educational support for Gambian students and communities. During the meeting, the Grand Imam reaffirmed the deep-rooted relations between Al-Azhar and Gambia and expressed Al-Azhar's readiness to increase scholarships for Gambian students to study at Al-Azhar in alignment with the country's societal needs. He also pledged to train Gambian imams at Al-Azhar's International Academy for Training Imams and Preachers to equip them with the skills necessary to address contemporary issues, including Islam's stance on coexistence, women's rights, and confronting extremist distortions of Islamic teachings. The Grand Imam emphasized that 'the Palestinian people are enduring the worst genocide and ethnic cleansing for nearly two years, abandoned to face their fate amid an unprecedented international failure and a deeply weakened global response.' Egyptian ambassador to Slovenia partakes in Africa Day 2025 ceremony
CAIRO/LJUBLJANA, June 1 (MENA) – Egypt's Ambassador to Slovenia Nahla el Zawahry has participated in the Africa Day 2025 ceremony organized by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The first day featured the Slovenian-African Economic Forum, hosted by the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in cooperation with the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The participants discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Slovenia and African countries, especially in light of the noticeable growth in economic and trade cooperation between the two sides. Egypt is ranked among the top four African partners for Slovenia. The forum also reviewed major developments and rapid economic transformations across African countries, as well as prospects for cooperation between Slovenia and African nations in fields such as digitization, smart infrastructure, e-governance, healthcare, circular economy, and agricultural technologies. On the second day, the Africa Day 2025 conference was opened, with this year's edition focusing on issues of natural resources and sustainable development, highlighting them as a key link between Africa and other world regions. The conference sessions, attended by over 100 participants—including representatives from African countries and experts in politics, development, economics, natural resources, and the environment—featured in-depth discussions on environmental challenges, the role of natural resources in peacebuilding, and relevant alternative approaches and practical solutions.
