Syria's Suwayda forms own army amid security concerns
The proposed army could be integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense if a nationwide agreement is reached. One of the primary conditions for such a deal is 'the elimination of jihadist influence in Syria and the creation of a non-ideological, national military,' according to Erem News.
The decision follows recent security threats targeting Suwayda, the agency indicated, noting that volunteering for the new force will be open on an individual basis, with no existing local factions to be absorbed in their current form.
'The key aim behind establishing the army is to move beyond the current factional structure dominating the area.'
Suwayda has witnessed multiple armed clashes in recent months involving local and irregular factions, some of which resulted in casualties. Fighting subsided after a local security agreement was reached with Damascus, allowing for the integration of Suwayda-based forces into the Syrian General Security Directorate to oversee local security.
While this army is designated exclusively for Suwayda, the concerns of other areas with large Druze populations—including Jaramana, Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, Rif Dimashq, and the villages of Mount Hermon—will be addressed separately, in a manner consistent with their unique geographic and local conditions. Details about these arrangements remain preliminary.

KRG to resume oil exports under Baghdad–Erbil agreement
Shafaq News – Erbil On Wednesday, the Kurdish Ministry of Natural Resources and Iraq's Ministry of Oil reached an agreement to restart crude oil exports from the Region. Oil exports from Kurdistan to Turkiye's Ceyhan port have been halted since March 2023, after a Paris arbitration ruling ordered Turkiye to stop loading KRG crude without Baghdad's consent, removing about 450,000 barrels per day from global markets. According to information obtained by Shafaq News, the agreement stipulates that exports will be conducted based on the fields' daily production, with 50,000 barrels allocated to meet Kurdish domestic needs. The remaining quantities will be delivered to the state-run Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). The information also indicated that exports can only resume after discussions between Baghdad and Ankara. Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree to terminate the crude oil pipeline agreement with Iraq covering exports through the Ceyhan port, with the termination set to take effect on July 27, 2026.

After graduating from 12th grade, Dahat Jangi chose a non-traditional path by enrolling in a 45-day mobile phone repair course instead of attending college. 'In the beginning, it was really difficult because I had no experience,' Jangi told Rudaw. 'But with support from the trainers and the Rwanga team, I improved. In the future, I hope to open my own phone repair shop and become the first woman in Kurdistan to do so.' Jangi was one of 40 participants in a vocational training program run by the Rwanga Foundation - an Erbil-based non-profit organization founded in 2013 with a mission to create 'a world where quality education is accessible for all.' The program offered training in two key professions: tailoring and mobile phone repair. Rezhin Mohsen, another participant, chose to study tailoring - a skill she views as essential for personal independence. 'When I learned about the tailoring course, I decided to take it so I could be independent,' she explained. The vocational initiative is a collaboration between the Rwanga Foundation, the Institute for University Cooperation Onlus (ICU), and the Catholic University in Erbil. Govar Haris, Rwanga's director of public relations, explained that the current training is just the first phase. 'The second stage involves three days of training on workplace adaptation and collaboration with business owners,' he said. In the final stage, participants will gain hands-on experience through a three-month internship with local companies. Afterward, 'they will attend additional workshops to apply their skills hands-on within the companies.' Launched in 2024, the two-year project aims to empower youth through practical skill-building and increase their employment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region.
