‘Finally got the go-to man': Calvin Murphy reacts to Houston trading for Kevin Durant
Calvin Murphy is a Hall of Fame legend. When considering the entirety of his journey from an NBA player to the broadcasting realm (now a Space City Home Network analyst), he is currently in his sixth decade as part of the Houston Rockets franchise.
So, it takes a lot to get him particularly excited. Houston's recent trade acquisition of All-Star forward Kevin Durant, who will eventually join Murphy in the Hall of Fame, does the trick.
'Having KD here, it don't get no bigger than that,' Murphy said at Wednesday's NBA draft experience event in Houston. 'This is my 57th year with the Rockets. When you can get something into the organization to excite me, you've done something well.'
Specifically, Murphy is excited for what Durant — long known as one of the NBA's elite scorers — can do for an offense that struggled last season in half-court situations. The Rockets are already an elite defensive team, so pairing a top-five defense with an offensive upgrade could potentially lift Houston to title contention as soon as next season.
'They finally got a player, the 'go-to man' in those last four minutes,' Murphy told reporters, as captured by Sal Maneen of Fox 26 Houston. 'Somebody that has been there, done that. I'm surprised they were able to get him, but I'm glad they got him.'
'Teams are going to try and slow the Rockets down because of their athleticism, but you can't slow them down now, with KD in the halfcourt,' Murphy added. 'That's the perfect offensive weapon. You've got a halfcourt weapon, and you've got those young legs that want to get up and down the floor and put numbers on the board.'
Murphy said he had personally spoken since the trade to Dillon Brooks, who will go to Phoenix as part of the blockbuster trade. Jalen Green is also joining the Suns.
Regarding those departures, Murphy said:
'Dillon the Villain' was my man. I hate to see him go, but it's all about business. I had a chance to say goodbye to him. With Jalen, fourth year, I kind of suspected something was going to happen after that (underwhelming) playoff series. But both of them are very talented, and they're going to do well.
Of course, even with Durant earning All-Star honors last season, there are some who are skeptical of how his game will age during his upcoming stint with the Rockets. In September, the former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and two-time champion turns 37 years old.
But that's not scaring off Murphy, who overcame his 5-foot-9, 165-pound size to become an all-time great during his playing days.
'They told me I was too short to play in this game, and I lasted and got into the Hall,' Murphy said. 'I don't want to hear negativity. This man is a proven champion. Excuse my language, but to hell with those naysayers.'

Fever Coach Stephanie White Gives Major Caitlin Clark Injury Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Indiana Fever fans may have gotten their hopes up just a bit over the weekend when superstar guard Caitlin Clark's official injury status was upgraded to game-time decision ahead of the team's matchup against the Dallas Wings on Tuesday. Clark, who's averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 31.1 minutes per game this season, has been sidelined for nearly four weeks with a right groin injury that forced her to miss the WNBA All-Star Game on July 19, which was held in front of her hometown fans in Indianapolis. This is the fourth major injury Clark has suffered this season. She's missed 19 of the Fever's 32 games plus the WNBA Commissioners' Cup Final while dealing with a left groin injury and a quadriceps injury, plus she missed some time during the preseason with a hand injury. So when fans saw Clark's status had been updated on the WNBA web site, it was speculated she could be nearing a possible return. "No return to practice," White told Peterson. "She's been able to get a little bit more in her full-court running with all of her body weight. It's really building up from doing minimal to then building some endurance to do longer periods of time. She's been able to do a bit more on the court in terms of how she moves but not into practice yet." Indiana (18-14) sits in a fifth-place tie with the Las Vegas Aces, right behind the Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Atlanta Dream, and Phoenix Mercury. With just 12 games left in the regular season, many fans have urged the Fever to consider shutting Clark down for most, if not all of those contests to have her healthy when the postseason starts in mid-september. However, with the recent season-ending injuries to guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, getting Clark back on the court a more pressing matter. How can the Boston Celtics change their play style next season?
After a flurry of off-season moves, the Boston Celtics are looking drastically different from the one that started the 2024-25 NBA season. Brad Stevens is overseeing a retooling process in Boston, and that means taking chances on players who have struggled to cement themselves in an NBA rotation in recent years. The hope is that at least some of them will emerge as candidates to provide depth on the next championship roster. When you look at the current roster, it's clear that there isn't the same level of two-way talent as in recent years. As such, Joe Mazzulla may need to adapt his style of play if he wants to get the best out of his new-look team. After all, Jaylen Brown, who is expected to be the primary offensive option, is at his best when attacking downhill or working out of the mid-block; he is not a catch-and-shoot or pull-up threat from deep. During a recent discussion between "Felger and Mazz" on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti discussed whether Joe Mazzulla will need to adjust his team's style of play for the upcoming season. Because, as currently constructed, it's unlikely that the roster will be able to execute the style of basketball we've become used to watching from the Celtics. Free agent former Mavericks big man working out for East contender
Free agent former Mavericks big man working out for East contender originally appeared on The Sporting News A free agent former Dallas Mavericks power forward/center is auditioning for an Eastern Conference hopeful. It makes sense that Dallas itself isn't interested in bringing the big man back, as the Mavericks currently boast a glut (perhaps a surplus) of frontcourt talent already. Sources inform longtime NBA insider Chris Haynes that Kai Jones is putting in a workout for the Miami Heat on Monday. This story will be updated...
