US President Trump made the remarks while answering ANI, on whether he had a number in mind for the penalties on India and if he was going to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The US President said, "I understand that India is no longer going to be buying oil from Russia. That's what I heard, I don't know if that's right or not. That is a good step. We will see what happens..." says, US President Donald Trump on a question by ANI, if he had a number in mind for the penalties and if he is going to speak with PM Modi."
On Friday, during the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, when asked about media reports that some Indian oil companies have stopped taking oil from Russia, had said India has made clear its approach on the issue.

"You are aware of our broad approach to energy sourcing requirements, that we look at what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation. We are not aware of any specifics," he said.
Jaiswal's comments came after a series of statements from the US, including from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, criticising India for continuing to import discounted Russian oil despite Western sanctions over the Ukraine war.
On the front of India-US ties, New Delhi on Friday expressed confidence that its relationship with the United States will continue to move forward and it remains focused on the substantive agenda the two countries are committed to.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Trump announced the imposition of 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods and a penalty for importing Russian oil, even as there were hopes of an interim India-US trade that would have otherwise helped avoid elevated tariffs.
After announcing a 25 per cent tariff and penalties for purchasing Russian oil, US President Donald Trump had said on Wednesday (local time) that Washington is continuing trade negotiations with New Delhi. He emphasised that India is one of the countries imposing high tariffs on the United States.
In response to ANI, if the US remains open to negotiating with India on the tariff front, Trump stated, "We're talking to them now. We'll see what happens. Again, India was the highest or just about the highest tariff nation in the world, one of the highest, 100 points, 150 points or percentages. So India was one of the highest in the world. They had 175 per cent and higher than that."
He emphasised India-US ties, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "friend," while noting the US trade deficit with India. He further stated that it "doesn't matter too much" if the India-US deal reaches a certain tariff.
"As you know, Prime Minister Modi is a friend of mine, but they don't do very much business in terms of business with us. They sell a lot to us, but we don't buy from them. You know why? Because the tariff is so high. They have one of the highest tariffs in the world. Now they're willing to cut it very substantially. But we'll see what happens. We're talking to India now," the US President said.
Meanwhile, in India, the government informed Parliament on Thursday that US President Donald Trump has announced a reciprocal tariff on Indian goods. It is currently examining the impact of these recent events and will take all necessary steps to safeguard the national interest.

He highlighted the nation's progress, saying that during the last 11 years, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been installed under the PM Narendra Modi administration, averaging almost 12 km per day. He described the 1,300 railway stations undergoing renovation as an unprecedented endeavour in the history of Indian Railways. PM Modi's Vision Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that India is implementing this change while maintaining train operations and keeping stations operational, which reflects the scope of PM Modi's vision, in contrast to developed nations, where station redevelopment entails completely stopping services. Adding further, he cited the introduction of contemporary trains such as the Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat Express, and the Namo Bharat Express. According to the minister, passengers have responded favorably to these new trains, which were constructed using cutting-edge technology. ECIs Notice To RJDs Tejashwi Yadav: Poll Body Says This EPIC Number Has Not Been Officially Issued
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent a notice to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and stated that the voter ID card that he showed in the press conference held on Saturday (August 2) is not officially issued. Tejashwi, the former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, had made allegations against the poll body over the draft electoral rolls, and claimed that his name is missing, and added that his EPIC number has been changed. Electoral Registration Officer, Patna, wrote to Bihar Assembly's Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav, requesting him to provide the details of the EPIC card mentioned by him in the press conference, so that it can be thoroughly investigated. "It is to be informed that in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, you stated that your name is not mentioned in the draft voter list. After investigation, it was found that your name is mentioned at serial number 416 of polling station number 204 (Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University), whose EPIC number is RAB0456228," the notice read. "According to you, from the quote of your press conference, your EPIC number is RAB2916120. As per the preliminary investigation, EPIC number RAB2916120 does not appear to be officially issued," it added. "Therefore, you are requested to kindly provide the details of the mentioned EPIC card (along with the original copy of the card) mentioned by you in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, to the undersigned, so that it can be thoroughly investigated," it elaborated. The District Administration of Patna had also clarified the situation and said that his name is included at polling station number 204, Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University. ANI quoted the Patna DM as saying, "It has been learned from some news sources that the name of the Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, is not in the draft voter list of special intensive revision. An investigation was conducted in this regard by the District Administration, Patna. It has become clear in this that the name of the Leader of the Opposition is recorded in the draft voter list." The news agency, on Saturday, reported, citing ECI sources, that Tejashwi Yadav's name is there in the Draft Electoral Rolls published as per SIR, and no records have been found for the second EPIC number yet. Furthermore, according to ANI, ECI sources rejected Tejaswi Prasad's allegation that his EPIC number was changed, saying that the RJD leader used the Electoral Roll with EPIC No. RAB0456228 for filling his nomination papers on affidavit in 2020. The sources added that he had this EPIC number in the electoral roll in 2015, and his name with this EPIC number exists in the draft Electoral Rolls. Meanwhile, Bihar is gearing up for the Assembly elections that are expected to take place later this year.

Could Donald Trump be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?
Claiming that US President Donald Trump had 'ended conflicts', including those between India and Pakistan, and Thailand and Cambodia, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said it was 'well past time' that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. During a press briefing on Thursday (July 31), Leavitt said Trump brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office since January. This is not the first time that Trump supporters have made such calls, even as his track record is debatable, at best. For one, New Delhi has countered his repeated claims of mediation. And would it be unusual for a US President to win the honour? Theoretically, yes, depending on the outcomes of the nomination process. The first stage for any category of the Nobel Prize involves nominations. A range of people — university professors, former Nobel winners in that category, etc. — are deemed eligible by the respective Nobel Committee to submit a nomination for that award. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which is responsible for awarding the Peace Prize, consists of five individuals appointed by the Norwegian parliament, who are often politicians. Heads of state and members of national assemblies and national governments can send nominations for the Peace Prize. The nominations are sifted through to make a list of valid nominations. For instance, Swedish Parliamentarian and Social Democrat, Erik Brandt, sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, nominating Adolf Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939. However, it was meant to be ironic and eventually withdrawn. The Nobel committee then creates a shortlist, external consultants research those candidates, and the committee finally makes its choice after discussions. The entire process takes eight months, and the full list of nominees is made public 50 years after the submission. Officially, the Nobel website states that the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor who instituted the prize, mentioned a broad criterion. The prize was to be awarded to the person 'who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses'. Over time, the definition of peace has included areas such as gender equality and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Yes. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt received the Peace Prize for having negotiated peace in the Russo-Japanese war in 1904-05, becoming the first US President to be honoured with the award. Woodrow Wilson won in 1920, for his efforts in ending the First World War and helping in creating the League of Nations, which was the precursor to the United Nations. Jimmy Carter won in 2002, for working to find 'peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social development.' US Vice President Al Gore (during Bill Clinton's tenure) was awarded in 2007, for his efforts to obtain and spread knowledge about climate change. The next year, then US President Barack Obama won the prize in a controversial decision, as he had yet to complete even a year of his presidency. The official citation said it was 'for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples'. Obama himself acknowledged the elephant in the room during his winning speech, saying, 'I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labours on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who've received this prize… my accomplishments are slight.' In Trump's case, he has frequently lamented not being awarded the prize, and world leaders hoping to develop a deeper relationship with the United States have picked up on the concern. Last month, as leaders of five African nations — Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal — met Trump in Washington to discuss a trade deal, they spoke positively about the possibility of a nomination.
