Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Birth Anniversary 2025: Why Shivaji Had Him Imprisoned?
Last Updated:
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's Jayanti: Born in 1657, he ruled the Maratha Kingdom from 1681 to 1689.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Birth Anniversary: Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj 's Jayanti is observed annually on May 14. Legendary warrior Chhatrapati Sivaji Maharaj and his first wife Saibai welcomed Sambhaji into the world on May 14, 1657, at Purandar Fort. Sambhaji lost his mother when he was only two years old. He was thus taken care of by his grandmother, Jijabai.
Following the death of his father, Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, assumed leadership of the Maratha Kingdom. Then, from 1681 until 1689, he ruled for nine years as the second Chhatrapati.
Maharashtra celebrates the day with considerable fervour. To honour his legacy, celebrations often include processions, religious meetings, and cultural events.
Why Was Sambhaji Imprisoned By Shivaji?
Sambhaji Maharaj's life was marked by family feuds and political estrangement, which sprang from conflicts within the Maratha royal family. Following the death of his mother, Saibai, Sambhaji's connection with his stepmother, Soyarabai, soured. She favoured her son, Rajaram, and wanted to elevate him to power, resulting in a rivalry between Sambhaji and Rajaram.
Reportedly, Sambhaji became estranged due to the politics driven by Shivaji Maharaj's second wife, Soyarabai, and someother courtiers.
There are reports that Shivaji Maharaj briefly imprisoned Sambhaji after accusing him of scheming against his father. The claims against Sambhaji were motivated in part by Soyarabai and her faction's political manoeuvres, which tried to damage his authority. Sambhaji, on the other hand, was able to escape from captivity and reportedly sought temporary shelter with the Mughals.
For over a year, Sambhaji left Shivaji's realm to join Aurangzeb's commander, Diler Khan, in politics. This approach widened the divide between Sambhaji and Soyarabai. As a result, Sambhaji was not invited to Rajaram's wedding, nor was he notified of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's death.
Despite internal problems, Sambhaji was able to defeat the plots and establish his power owing to his actions and strategic acumen. In addition to symbolising the continuation of Shivaji's legacy, his crowning emphasised how important it is to have strong, cohesive leadership to protect and grow the Maratha Empire in the face of both internal strife and external threats.

The fact that he has used the term 'final journey' is extremely serious. I urge him to take care of his health." Jarange appealed to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar to urgently address the demands of the protesting farmers. If their voices go unheard, farmers will have no choice but to take to the streets, he warned. Emphasizing unity among communities, Jarange stated, "In this movement, there are no Marathas or OBCs, we must set aside caste differences and stand united as farmers. All farmer leaders must immediately convene a joint meeting and extend support to this protest. A statewide Maharashtra bandh must be announced. Not a single vehicle should move that day. We have the will to act, and we are ready to leave politics aside for this fight. " Kadu thanked Jarange for his unwavering support and reiterated the urgency of the matter. "Every day, 20 to 25 farmers are ending their lives. Imagine the pain when a farmer is forced to sell soybeans for just Rs3,500 per quintal after months of hard labor. This injustice must end," Kadu said. Senior leader Girish Gandhi was also present at the protest site, showing cross-party solidarity for the farmers' cause. Mahadeo Jankar, president of Rashtriya Samaj Party, too criticized Mahayuti govt, accusing it of coming to power through alleged EVM manipulation and being intoxicated by power. He warned the govt not to compel people to sacrifice their lives and called for united action against the administration's neglect of farmers, the underprivileged, Dalits, and tribal communities. Hunger strike enters Day 4 The indefinite hunger strike demanding justice for farmers has entered its fourth day today even as Bachchu Kadu's health has reportedly started to deteriorate. According to the administration, he has lost nearly 4 kg weight and is experiencing high blood pressure. Several farmer organisations, disability rights groups, and public representatives visited the protest site to extend their support to Kadu's cause. The growing support reflects the seriousness of the issues raised. Team of doctors deployed In view of the ongoing agitation, the district administration has taken precautionary measures and deployed a special team of expert doctors to monitor health condition of Kadu and other protestors. The collector's office has directed the civil surgeon and medical superintendent of the Divisional Referral Service Hospital and Super Specialty Hospital to conduct regular health check-ups of Kadu and other protestors. A two-member expert medical team, including a doctor from the Super Specialty Hospital, has been appointed. This team will carry out health examinations twice a day and submit detailed reports with necessary recommendations to the district administration twice daily. Prior to this, Kadu had submitted memorandums to the authorities on May 24 and June 4 regarding the same demands and informed about the agitation. District Collector Ashish Yerekar has instructed the concerned officials to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of the protestors.

HC to hear afresh pleas against Maratha quota law from July 18
Mumbai: A special three-judge bench of Bombay high court will begin hearing afresh the challenges to state's latest iteration of the Maratha reservations on July 18. After the Supreme Court directive, HC, in May, constituted a new three-judge bench to hear the petitions, including those filed as public interest litigations, challenging the constitutional validity of the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2024, which provides 10% reservation for the Maratha community in govt jobs and admissions to educational institutions. The state opposed the request for consideration of any interim relief. The new full bench of Justices Ravindra V Ghuge, N J Jamadar, and Sandeep Marne on Wednesday recorded submissions of advocate general Birendra Saraf. There were detailed arguments heard in 2024 on interim relief, after which there was an interim arrangement that all further admissions to educational institutions and employment would be subject to court orders. Saraf submitted that this has operated for over a year and that the request for fresh consideration of interim relief was unwarranted. Pradeep Sancheti, senior counsel for a petitioner, sought an earlier date. Other lawyers also argued, saying students who took admission last year were also affected and hence, were seeking interim orders. In May, Supreme Court asked HC to expeditiously hear the pleas, including applications by students appearing for the undergraduate and postgraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test of 2025. The students filed pleas seeking interim relief, claiming that a delay in the disposal of pleas was impacting their right to equal consideration in the admission process. The petitions were not fully heard when the then HC Chief Justice was transferred in Jan as Delhi high court Chief Justice. Supreme Court said if Bombay HC cannot hear the matter for final disposal then it may consider interim relief. HC has now fixed a schedule to hear the matter at length on the main challenge. Last July, HC had observed that the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission, headed by former HC judge Justice S B Shukre, was a necessary party to be heard in one of the PILs filed before it.
