Crime against women on rise in Jabalpur
In the past fortnight alone, police recorded three incidents where women were attacked inside their homes, leaving many fearful that they, too, could fall victim to intruders.
On July 30, a man broke into the residence of Neelam Singh, an assistant prof in the medicine department of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, in the Krishna Complex area. Police said the accused entered with the intention to steal but attacked her with a knife when confronted.
Locals caught the suspect and handed him over to police.
On the night of July 31–Aug 1, a man entered a house in Cheritall area under Kotwali police limits and allegedly raped a young woman. When her 70-year-old grandmother woke up, he strangled her to death, tied up the victim, and fled. The accused, police said, is married and has children.
In Sakra village under Patan police station, a 15-year-old girl was hacked to death in the early hours of Aug 4–5 by a 22-year-old man, Rakesh Raikwar, who allegedly loved her one-sidedly.
Police said her mother refused his marriage proposal due to age and caste differences. The teen was sleeping alongside her elder sister when the accused attacked her with an axe.
In another case under Ranjhi police station, a man stopped a young woman on the road and attacked her with a screwdriver in broad daylight, inflicting serious injuries. Police said the accused, who was arrested, was also obsessed with the victim.
Police launched investigations in all cases, but the frequency and nature of the attacks have intensified demands for stronger policing and preventive measures in Jabalpur.

Devotees scammed in online booking for Srirangam Yatri Nivas
Trichy: Planning to visit the famed Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam and spend a couple of days at the HR&CE-run Yatri Nivas there? By all means go ahead, but steer clear of "online booking" offers. For, the guest house doesn't take reservations on the internet, but cybercriminals have been busy duping unsuspecting pilgrims who go for it. Since December, several people who made 'online reservations' for lodging through these fake websites have been scammed, according to complaints registered with cyber police, accessed by TOI. HR&CE sources said they have so far filed seven complaints in connection with the scam, which involves amounts ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹16,500. Police and temple officials have been left in a tizzy. The budget-friendly lodging complex controlled by the HR&CE department was opened in Jan 2015 and serves as a major spot for devotees travelling from across the country to Srirangam temple. Speaking to several of the victims, TOI learned that the modus operandi of the scamsters was to lure people who begin searching online for 'guest house bookings in Srirangam.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! Back Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo The fraudulent websites often appear at the top of the search results with a 'sponsored' tag. Drawn in by the serene images of the lodging, unsuspecting victims then enter their phone numbers on the fake site. "Thereafter, I received a WhatsApp message from a number directing me to pay ₹5,000 and ₹1,450 in two instalments via UPI. After paying it, I waited for a while but did not receive a booking confirmation," says Amaresh K from Nandyala in Andhra Pradesh, who was scammed on July 21. When he called the number, strangely a man spoke to him in Hindi. "And when I asked for a refund, I was told to pay another ₹4,000 to process it," he told TOI. "When I visited the temple, I went straight to the lodging, where it was confirmed that it was a scam and there was no system for online reservations," he said. A senior HR&CE official said the matter has been raised with the commissioner of police. Police have so far filed only CSRs, not FIRs, and have not tracked down anyone operating the scam. They said they have blocked multiple websites linked to the fraud. "But the scamsters operate much like those sending hoax bomb threats. They work on different botnets, and the website domains keep mushrooming," a senior police official at Trichy district cybercrime wing said. The official added that they have advised HR&CE department to publicise the fact that no online reservations are taken. HR&CE sources said they have pasted instructions at the lodging and are flashing the warning on the temple website regularly. "Police say they have not filed FIRs because we have not been able to bring the victims in person, instead of us (HR&CE) lodging complaints on their behalf. We have asked the victims to register their complaints from their respective places at their local police stations," said the HR&CE official. A senior city police official told TOI that an investigation is underway. It was difficult to go beyond a point as the victims are mostly in another location, sometimes even outside the state, when they are scammed, he said. Two 9-yr-old girls gang-raped at pool construction site in Narela
New Delhi: Two nine-year-old girls were allegedly gang-raped late last week by two men, a contractor and a caretaker, near an under-construction swimming pool on a private property in outer Delhi's Narela. Both men have been arrested. Police said the girls, who are neighbours, were lured to an area near the pool on some pretexts. Anil Kumar (37) and Munil Kumar (24), residents of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, respectively, were also said to have threatened the girls after the alleged assault. On Aug 8, the mother of one of the survivors filed a complaint, alleging that her daughter and another girl were sexually assaulted at a swimming pool in Narela. A case was registered under sections 70(2) (gang rape), 127 (wrongful confinement) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 6 and 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act at Narela police station. Police arrested Anil and Munil after following the due procedure. Police didn't find their involvement in any previous criminal cases. An officer said a group of girls had found the gate to the pool area open and entered the premises to go for a swim. The two men noticed them and cunningly lured the two girls away from the pool and assaulted them, he added. According to police, it was confirmed that though the pool was not operational or ready for use, people frequently came to swim or bathe there without any charge or formal permission. "The pool is located on a private property. One of the accused, Anil, is a contractor responsible for the property's maintenance while Munil serves as the caretaker. Both girls come from economically weak backgrounds," police said. According to Delhi Police data, 932 cases of rape and Pocso offences were registered till June this year compared to 1,040 such cases during the same period last year. In 2024, a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old aunt were allegedly gang-raped by five men in southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar. All the accused were arrested. Five held for stealing life-saving injection from PGI's ENT ward
Chandigarh: In a shocking breach of hospital security, five individuals were arrested for allegedly stealing a life-saving injection from the ENT ward of PGI. The stolen drug — a fibrin sealant priced at Rs 14,900 — was meant for a two-year-old boy from Punjab who had undergone two surgeries. The theft forced the child's parents, who had borrowed money to purchase the injection, to buy it again. The incident came to light after the boy's family filed a complaint at the PGI police post on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off and growing suspicions, PGI security personnel laid a trap and apprehended the culprits on Tuesday. CCTV footage helped identify the accused, all residents of Himachal Pradesh, who were reportedly using a cab from Punjab and planning to target more patients. Sources revealed that the stolen medicines were being sold to a chemist in Gol Market, near PGI's advanced cardiac centre, suggesting a larger racket being operated within the hospital premises, involving touts and unauthorised individuals. Hospital staff, speaking anonymously, confirmed the presence of outsiders who move freely in wards and OPDs. "They take commissions for arranging surgery dates, refer patients to private labs, and supply medicines inside the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo It's an open secret," said one staffer. Another added that the ENT department or PGI administration should have taken responsibility and ensured that the injection was provided to the admitted child. The incident has reignited concerns about PGI's security protocols, which were supposedly tightened after a tragic case in 2023. That year, a patient died after being injected with toxic substances by an unauthorised woman who had gained access to the gynaecology ward. Following that, PGI had mandated staff uniforms and promised stricter access control — promises that now appear to have been poorly enforced. Despite repeated attempts, PGI's spokesperson did not respond to queries from TOI. Meanwhile, the arrested individuals remain in custody, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the racket.
