Child dies in suspected JE case in Dindori
Bhopal/Jabalpur: A six-year-old child died in Dindori in a suspected case of death due to Japanese Encephalitis, which hasn't been reported in more than five years in MP. Health officials say the first lab report indicates the case to be a presumptive JE case. It is only confirmed as JE after a second test, but the child died before the second test, hence it cannot be confirmed. A six-year-old boy, a resident of Bahera village under Amarpur development block of Dindori district, was admitted to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College. He died during treatment on Aug 10. As he had symptoms of JE, laboratory tests were done. The first report confirmed him to be 'presumptive' positive. Chief medical and health officer, Dindori, Dr Ramesh Marawi, said, "Two samples are tested, but only one sample of this child was tested. As soon as I get any instructions, we will follow the required protocols like screening, etc." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Crime against women on rise in Jabalpur
Jabalpur: A spate of violent crimes in Jabalpur, including murders, sexual assaults, and armed attacks inside homes, has sparked concerns over the city's law and order, with residents, especially women, questioning their safety even within their own houses. In the past fortnight alone, police recorded three incidents where women were attacked inside their homes, leaving many fearful that they, too, could fall victim to intruders. On July 30, a man broke into the residence of Neelam Singh, an assistant prof in the medicine department of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, in the Krishna Complex area. Police said the accused entered with the intention to steal but attacked her with a knife when confronted. Locals caught the suspect and handed him over to police. On the night of July 31–Aug 1, a man entered a house in Cheritall area under Kotwali police limits and allegedly raped a young woman. When her 70-year-old grandmother woke up, he strangled her to death, tied up the victim, and fled. The accused, police said, is married and has children. In Sakra village under Patan police station, a 15-year-old girl was hacked to death in the early hours of Aug 4–5 by a 22-year-old man, Rakesh Raikwar, who allegedly loved her one-sidedly. Police said her mother refused his marriage proposal due to age and caste differences. The teen was sleeping alongside her elder sister when the accused attacked her with an axe. In another case under Ranjhi police station, a man stopped a young woman on the road and attacked her with a screwdriver in broad daylight, inflicting serious injuries. Police said the accused, who was arrested, was also obsessed with the victim. Police launched investigations in all cases, but the frequency and nature of the attacks have intensified demands for stronger policing and preventive measures in Jabalpur. HC nod for MTP of minor rape survivor
Bhopal: The MP high court has allowed the medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) for a minor who is 28 weeks pregnant. The case was referred to the high court by the Damoh district court as the pregnancy of the 16-year-old rape survivor exceeded 20 weeks. Hearing the case as a petition, the high court sought a medical report of the girl. Two doctors conducted a medical test on the girl on May 21, 2025, and stated that she was 24 weeks pregnant. They opined that the MTP would be risky. However, the survivor and her mother pleaded that they were ready to take any risk for the termination of the pregnancy. The bench of Justice Amit Seth, in his order, stated that the Supreme Court and the high courts have allowed MTP of a 30-week foetus. The rape survivor in this case has a 28-week pregnancy. The judge, while allowing the MTP, instructed that the girl be sent with her parents to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, where specialist doctors should advise them on the pros and cons of the procedure for medical termination of pregnancy at this advanced stage. The procedure will be conducted by a team of specialist doctors. The parents will take care of the girl following the procedure. If the child is born during the procedure, the state govt will be responsible for its upbringing. A portion of the foetus will be kept safe for DNA profiling. The team of specialist doctors will decide on the date of surgery for MTP. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
