Council demands appointment of GVMC Commissioner
Visakhapatnam: The demand for the appointment of GVMC Commissioner for the civic body united not just the YSRCP public representatives but also the public representatives of alliance parties at the council meeting.
Organised for the first time in Visakhapatnam on Friday after Peela Srinivasa Rao took charge as GVMC Mayor, the YSRCP corporators entered the council hall displaying placards highlighting the same demand.
For the first time, the alliance corporators extended support to the YSRCP corporators in appointing the GVMC Commissioner. YSRCP MP Golla Babu Rao raised the issue in the meeting and it was supported by Visakhapatnam north constituency P Vishnu Kumar Raju. 'With Visakhapatnam being one of the most recognised cities across the world, it has been months since the GVMC Commissioner was appointed,' the MLA mentioned.
YSRCP corporators wondered how the city could be considered as a financial capital of Andhra Pradesh if the GVMC Commissioner itself is yet to be appointed. 'It is practically difficult for district Collector and GVMC in-charge Commissioner MN Harendhira Prasad to focus on the corporation as he is quite busy with administration engagements,' they stated.
Speaking at the council meeting, TDP State president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao assured that the appointment of the new Commissioner for the corporation would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and efforts will be taken to appoint in the next few days. 'Compared to the corporation budget in North Eastern states, GVMC is allocated with a higher budget. Efforts will be taken to appoint a young and capable Commissioner for it,' Palla Srinivasa Rao assured. Meanwhile, ward corporators explained issues in their respective wards to Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao and appealed to him to resolve them at the earliest by visiting the wards. During the meeting, Ward 20 corporator Muvvala Lakshmi Suresh protested by climbing on a chair. She alleged that the coalition party leaders had occupied a park in her ward. However, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao warned her that action would be taken if she did not step down from the chair.
Announcing that a council meeting will be held once in every 45 days, the Mayor underlined that equal opportunity will be given to all corporators in the council meeting irrespective of the party they belong to.
'Also, I will be available for the corporators on all working days and they can get their problems resolved,' the Mayor assured.

According to sources close to Balasubramanyam, he was displeased with the party for not appointing him as TDP incharge for the constituency and had distanced him from party activities for quite sometime now. Balasubramanyam's resignation is definitely seen as a jolt for the ruling TDP, which recently conducted its maiden Mahanadu with utmost pomp in Kadapa for three days between May 27-29. It was from this very platform that Naidu, who once again got elected as the TDP national president, gave a clarion call to party leaders and cadres to grow from strength to strength and aim for a clean sweep in Kadapa district in the next general elections.

Andhra Pradesh TDP chief's ex-MLA father passes away
Visakhapatnam: The AP TDP president and Gajuwaka MLA, Palla Srinivas's former MLA father, Palla Simhachalam (86), passed away on Friday following ailments. Palla Simhachalam was well-known as a trade union leader in Gajuwaka and the industrial area in Visakhapatnam. He had led many unions in different factories and industries in and around the city from the 1970s to 2005. Palla Simhachalam was a former MLA of the Visakha-2 constituency in Visakhapatnam. He contested in the Assembly Elections for the first time in 1983 on behalf of Congress and lost the elections. Later, he joined TDP and contested from the Pendurthi segment in 1989 but lost to Gudivada Gurunatha Rao of Congress by a margin of 13,000 votes. The trade union leader, Palla Simhachalam, won the election for the first time in 1994 against Yandrapu Mariadas of Congress with a majority of over 22,000 votes, securing 54.11% of the votes from the largest populated constituency, Visakha-2. He did not contest in the 1999 elections. Andhra Pradesh raises maximum working hours to 10 per day; CPI vows nationwide protest
The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has resolved to increase the maximum working hours from nine to ten per day, aiming to enhance ease of doing business and attract greater investment to the state. Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister K Parthasarathy announced that labour laws will be amended to make them more 'favourable' to both workers and investors. CPI State Secretary K Ramakrishna criticised the decision, accusing the NDA governments at both the Centre and state levels of pursuing 'anti-worker' policies. "Section 54 which allows maximum nine hours of work a day has now been raised to 10 hours per day. Under Section 55 there used to be one hour rest for five hours (work) now that has been changed to six hours," Parthasarathy explained recently, detailing the cabinet's decisions on labour law reforms. Previously, overtime was capped at 75 hours per quarter; this limit has now been extended to 144 hours. "Because of this (amendments to labour laws), investors in factories will (come to our state). These labour rules will be favourable for labourers and they will come to invest more. Globalisation is happening in every state. These amendments were brought to implement global rules," Parthasarathy added. The minister also highlighted that the cabinet has relaxed regulations regarding night shifts to enable more women to work during these hours. According to Parthasarathy, women were previously prohibited from night shifts but can now work with safeguards such as consent, transport facilities, security, and surveillance in place. He emphasised that workplaces for women during night shifts must be fully illuminated. "When you work extra, income will increase. By these rules women can work in the formal sector. They empower women economically and promote gender inclusion and industrial growth. Also contribute to women's empowerment," he stated. Meanwhile, CPI State Secretary K Ramakrishna vehemently opposed the amendments, alleging that the Central and state governments are undermining workers' rights. "For the past 11 years, the Modi government has repeatedly taken measures that infringe upon workers' rights in India," Ramakrishna told PTI on Saturday. To contest the new rules, trade unions have planned protests across India on 9 July, with active participation expected from all sectors. He further remarked that the NDA governments at both the Centre and state levels are pursuing 'anti-worker policies'.
