Nagaland farmers' involvement key to water mgmt: Study

Dimapur: A Nagaland University-led study found that local farming community involvement is vital in long-term water management initiatives.
The research said the long-term water management initiatives like Aquafer Recharge and Recovery (ASR) require sustained involvement of the local farming community to succeed, a varsity release said on Monday.
The study found that the ASR initiatives could be a game-changer for hilly terrain and the water-scarce region of Nagaland and other northeastern parts of India. Collaboration with govt agencies, NGOs, and the private sector will be essential to mainstreaming ASR into broader water resource management strategies, the study said.
A pilot study conducted in south Bihar with a grant from Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research demonstrated socio-environmental impacts in terms of higher potential for groundwater recharge, improved irrigation reliability and longer availability of groundwater and socio-economic benefits for farmers due to diversification of cropping, availability of water for cropping and reliable yields.
The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Societal Impacts during June 2025.

India's space regulator has picked a consortium led by Google-backed startup PixxelSpace to build a commercial home-grown constellation of earth observation satellites, with an investment of more than 12 billion rupees (nearly $137 million) over the next five years, it said on consortium, comprising local space tech firms Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India and Dhruva Space, will design, build, and operate the satellites, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) PixxelSpace-led consortium won the project, outbidding Indian defence equipment makers Astra Microwave and Bharat Electronics. The Indian government wants to reduce its dependence on foreign systems, including the widely used U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), and says its regional navigation satellite system, called NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), provides more accurate domestic navigation and that its use would benefit the economy. This is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's drive for self-reliance, which has also expanded the use of NavIC. India has also been pushing tech giants to make smartphones compatible with its home-grown navigation system within months, worrying the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi and Apple.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) on Tuesday announced the selection of the PixxelSpace India-led consortium to design, build, and operate India's first fully indigenous commercial earth observation (EO) satellite constellation under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Bengaluru-based PixxelSpace India consortium comprises Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India, and Dhruva Space. IN-SPACe said the selection of the PixxelSpace India consortium was done following a competitive bidding process which involved two more consortia. It is for the first time in the history of the Indian space sector that a private consortium would invest more than ₹1,200 crore over the next five years to launch a constellation of 12 state-of-the-art EO satellites equipped with panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors. The constellation will deliver Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and Value-Added Services (VAS) for applications in climate change monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, marine surveillance, national security, and urban planning, while also catering to the global demand for high-quality geospatial intelligence. IN-SPACe said that by generating high-resolution, indigenous satellite data, the initiative will significantly reduce India's reliance on foreign sources, ensure data sovereignty, and position the country among the global leaders in space-based data solutions. 'This initiative signals the coming of age of India's private space industry in the space sector. It demonstrates the capability and confidence of Indian companies to lead large-scale, technologically advanced, and commercially viable space missions that serve both national and global markets. The EO -PPP model fosters an ecosystem where public and private capabilities reinforce each other to drive growth, innovation, and self-reliance,' Pawan Goenka, chairman, IN-SPACe, said. Under the PPP framework, the Union government will provide strategic, technical, and policy support, while the PixxelSpace India-led consortium will own and operate the EO system, including satellite manufacturing, launches from Indian soil, ground infrastructure, and commercialisation of data services. IN-SPACe further added that the EO constellation will be deployed in a phased manner over the next four years to ensure continuous service upgrades and expanded coverage. Once operational, it will be among the most advanced EO systems in the world, designed, built, and operated entirely in India by Indian talent.

Union Cabinet's approval on Tuesday (August 12) for two projects in Odisha and one each in Punjab and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, together entailing an investment of ₹4,600 crore, under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is bound to raise hackles in Telangana. Coming amid a intensive pitch of Telangana to host such projects, the development is set to become the latest tool for the Congress-ruled government to voice concerns over alleged discrimination against the State. Providing credence would be the presumable interest semiconductor companies have been evincing in anchoring the projects in Telangana. At another level, Chief Minister's Reddy's government is also likely to face heat from principal opposition BRS over the development. How much of fodder it will provide to the Rao-led party is anyone's guess, especially since it had also in the past questioned Centre's decision over the location of some projects. Hours after the Union Cabinet decision, highly placed sources in State government reiterated Telangana remains a highly favourable environment for semiconductor manufacturing. Blaming the Centre of maintaining a bias against Telangana, they said such an approach will eventually result in concentration of semiconductor ecosystem in BJP-favoured States and in the process negate Telangana's policy attractiveness, infrastructure robustness and political stability. During their Delhi visits, Chief Minister Reddy and Minister for IT and Industries D. Sridhar Babu had met Union ministers seeking Centre's approval for semiconductor projects in the State. As recent as in July, Mr. Reddy had met Union Minister for IT Ashwini Vaishnaw urging the latter to expeditiously approve the semiconductor projects in the State. He had appealed to the Union Minister for approval of the proposed ASIP project and micro LED display fab project by Crystal Matrix. An official note on the Union Cabinet decision showed Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) will be setting up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh, under technology tie-up with APACT Co of South Korea, with an annual capacity of 96 million units. The manufactured products will find applications in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile applications and other electronic products. Sources in the State government said ASIP Technologies was originally meant to set up a ₹890 crore OSAT/ATMP facility in Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Maheshwaram, near Hyderabad. Telangana government had allocated 10 acres at a subsidised rate, along with a package of other fiscal benefits. The plans to setup facility in Telangana were in steady progress as ASIP had applied for incentives under ISM and received clearance from both the Techno financial Advisory Group and the Ministry of Finance, they said. To support their argument of BJP allegedly snatching away projects meant for Telangana, they cited the 46 acres allotted to a Kaynes group company at Kongara Kalan, near Hyderabad, for a ₹2,800 crore OSAT and compound semiconductor facility in which 2,000 direct jobs were envisaged. Telangana offered customised benefits to facilitate the setting up of its semicon plant. An MoU was also signed but the project was relocated to Sanand in Gujarat following what the sources described as intervention and preferential allocation by the Union government. Apart from highlighting the world-class infrastructure, favourable environment and world-class research and development centres, the State government had announced multiple facilitating projects, including plans to a dry port in Hyderabad and connect it to a sea port in A.P. with a dedicated road and rail corridor, they said.
