This Adorable Sea Lion Can Keep a Beat Better Than Some Humans
A feel for the groove isn't restricted to humans, but it does seem pretty limited across the animal kingdom. Chimpanzees can keep a beat, but their ability to do so is low compared to Homo sapiens. One species of lemur is better.
A 16-year-old California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) named Ronan blows them all out of the water – even some humans. A new study shows that her ability to bop along to a rhythm isn't just a learned response to some tempos: she can synchronize her movements with new rhythms, suggesting that, once she was trained in what to do, she could adapt and keep a beat to multiple tempos.
"She is incredibly precise, with variability of only about a tenth of an eyeblink from cycle to cycle," says comparative neuroscientist Peter Cook of the University of California Santa Cruz and New College of Florida.
"Sometimes, she might hit the beat five milliseconds early, sometimes she might hit it 10 milliseconds late. But she's basically hitting the rhythmic bullseye over and over and over again."
Ronan, a resident of UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Laboratory, was the subject of a paper published in 2013 that described her remarkable ability to keep time. At three years of age, when just a juvenile, she was trained to bob her head along with a ticking metronome, and later music, adjusting her beat-keeping as the tempo of the metronome changed.
Later studies questioned whether Ronan's abilities could be as accurate as those of a human, since the initial results showed slightly higher variability in timing than is typically seen in human studies. Other scientists also queried the extensive training Ronan underwent, and whether her time-keeping is the product of the same neurobiological mechanisms as human rhythm.
In the intervening 12 years, Cook and his colleagues occasionally gave Ronan a little practice at the boogie – not much, just 10 to 15 seconds at a time, now and again, for a total of around 2,000 sessions.
"She definitely wasn't overtrained," Cook explains. "Realistically, if you added up the amount of rhythmic exposure Ronan has had since she's been with us, it is probably dwarfed by what a typical one-year-old kid has heard."
Now, as a mature adult, her ability to keep the beat has not only improved – it has outstripped that of some humans. In a follow-up study, the researchers tested Ronan's ability to bop in time with a snare drum tapping at tempos of 112, 120, and 128 beats per minute – the higher and lower of which were tempos to which she had not previously been exposed.
They then tested 10 undergraduate university students with the same sounds, tasking them to keep the beat with movements of their forearms.
"We compared Ronan's performance to that of the adults we tested," the researchers write, "providing the first apples-to-apples comparative assessment of rhythmic entrainment between humans and non-humans with established beatkeeping ability."
Not a single human outperformed Ronan in all of the tests. Her tempo interval, movement interval, and phase-angle – the measures of how close her movements were to the beat – were closer to perfect synchronization than at least some of the humans in all tests. Her time-keeping was noticeably more accurate at faster tempos, too.
At 112, 120, and 128 beats per minute, Ronan's performed average tempo was 113.1, 121.6, and 129.0 beats per minute. The humans' average tempos for the same were 112.4, 119.3, and 126.2, respectively.
The results suggest that non-human animals can be trained to keep a rhythm, if they feel motivated to do so. Many of them probably have little reason to do so in the wild, but doing it in a lab where treats and praise are dispensed can help scientists understand animal intelligence and the way they process information, particularly as they grow into adults.
"One of the most important outcomes of the study is the fact that maturation and experience matter," says animal behaviorist Colleen Reichmuth of UC Santa Cruz. " It's not just a test of rhythmic performance. It reflects her cognitive behavior and her ability to remember and refine it over time."
It's important to note that Ronan was well rewarded for her participation in the study: "When the test session was complete, human participants were thanked and given further details on the nature of the study. Ronan received a toy filled with fish and ice."
The research has been published in Scientific Reports.

Traces of Mysterious Ancient Human Population Discovered in Colombia
Colombia sits on the land through which Homo sapiens first spread from Central America to South America more than 14,500 years ago, making it a crucial population gateway. Researchers have now found evidence of a previously unknown people who once lived there. Specifically, an international team has traced back 6,000 years of history, based on DNA analysis of 21 sets of carefully chosen human remains. The remains were collected from five sites across the Altiplano plateau, in central Colombia. These DNA records reveal a fascinating timeline, including the existence of an ancient population with genetics unrelated to any modern descendants – a group of people who may have been some of the earliest settlers in South America, but who subsequently disappeared completely. "We couldn't find descendants of these early hunter-gatherers of the Colombian high plains – the genes were not passed on," says anthropologist Kim-Louise Krettek, from the University of Tübingen, in Germany. "That means in the area around Bogotá there was a complete exchange of the population." DNA contains the genetic instructions we need to grow into the people we are, with contributions from parents, grandparents, and generations before them. By studying it, scientists can work out links between generations – and see how these generations moved and evolved over time. While one group was settled in the Colombian region around 6,000 years ago, a different community, with completely separate genetics, called the area home starting about 2,000 years ago. These people, who would've most likely spoken Chibchan languages, do have known genetic links to modern groups from the lower part of Central America. This later group also represents a cultural shift, from the hunter-gatherers of the original population, to people who were skilled in pottery-making and more sophisticated types of agriculture. It seems that these people stayed in place until settlers from Europe started arriving in the 16th century. "That genetic traces of the original population disappear completely is unusual, especially in South America," says geneticist Andrea Casas-Vargas, from the National University of Colombia. What happened to this newly discovered group, established 6,000 years ago, is something the researchers don't speculate on – though the usual causes of conflict or disease may be responsible. It's something future studies could look into. Even with many questions remaining unanswered though, the research offers some valuable insight into the history of South America and some of the earliest people to venture down from the north. Earlier studies have suggested that the story of indigenous people in the region may be more complex than previously thought, and genetic links to South America have connected its people to places as far away as Australia. With Colombia sitting right on the land bridge between South America and the continent to the north of it, however, it's a particularly important place to study – and it likely has more secrets to give up yet. "These are the first ancient human genomes from Colombia ever to be published," says anthropologist Cosimo Posth, from the University of Tübingen. The research has been published in Science Advances. Farmers Dug Up a 300,000-Year-Old Skull. It's Unlike Any Human Ancestor We've Ever Seen.

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: The fragmented Maba 1 skull, which had previously been described as belonging to a Neanderthal, is not so Neanderthal after all. Researchers reassessed the skull and found resemblances to Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo sapiens, but it didn't exactly fit into any of these species. It is most similar to other debatable hominin specimens. Maba 1 also suffered trauma before death, but the specific cause of the trauma remains unknown. In 1958, in a narrow trench of an eroded limestone cave near Maba Village in Shaoguan City, China, local farmers were digging up bat guano for fertilizer when they came across something unusual. Fossilized fragments of bone surfaced that looked somewhat human, and were later determined to be part of a skull (and several facial bones). But which of our ancestors this skull belonged to has remained a mystery. At a glance, Maba 1 seems like any other skull fragment—and that is the whole problem. Because no other parts of the skull were ever found, it was nearly impossible to positively identify the fragment as having come from a particular species of hominin. The only thing researchers knew for certain is that the bone dates back to the late Middle Pleistocene and is about 300,000 years old. While it had previously been determined to belong to a Neanderthal, a team of researchers who previously studied the skull have now reevaluated it and found contradictory features that aredifficult to ignore. '[Maba 1] is well-known for the Neanderthal-like face, while its neurocranium shows affinities with many hominin taxa, which makes the taxonomic status of Maba 1 controversial,' they wrote in a study recently published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology. Until now, the skull fragments had been observed externally, but much about their internal structures was still unknown. So, the skull was reconstructed using data from micro-CT scans, which can image the inside of a fossil without damaging the actual specimen. The scans made one thing very clear: the skull probably wasn't from a Neanderthal. Channels in the sinuses that veins once used to ferry blood through spongy diploid bone were connected to the parietal foramen towards the back of the skull by tubular structures—a very rare occurence in Homo neandertalensis. The inside of the skull's frontal lobe turned out to be morphologically closer to Homo erectus than Neanderthals or Homo sapiens (though Homo erectus had a smaller brain than its two counterparts), and the cranial capacity of Maba 1 was more like that of Neanderthals and modern humans. But while the researchers agreed that Maba 1 seemed closest to H. erectus, differences from the morphological standards of the species were too obvious to ignore. The frontal lobe was short in comparison, and the bregma—where the coronal (lengthwise) and sagittal (crosswise and perpendicular to the coronal) sutures meet—was thicker than that of H. erectus. Maba 1 also shows signs of trauma—a dark, semicircular lesion on the external right side of the frontal bone, which spans the area from the middle of the head to the bridge of the nose. Signs of healing suggest that the individual suffered this injury while still alive, though it is unclear whether the lesion healed completely and what exactly caused it. There were no signs of infection. While it could have been left behind by an impact such as a fall, it is also possible that such a lesion was the result of anemia, or even a tumor. Strangely enough, the researchers concluded that Maba 1 is more similar to other debatable hominin skulls, such as the LH18 specimen found in Tanzania, which is thought to be an early Homo sapiens skull. There are also resemblances to the Djebel Irhoud skulls from Morocco (first assumed to be Neanderthal remains but now thought to be from some of the earliest known Homo sapiens) and Zambia's Broken Hill skull (a Homo heidelbergensis specimen now at the Natural History Museum in London). 'The internal structures of Maba 1 show a combination of morphological features found in various species,' the researchers concluded. 'These findings further evidence the high morphological variability among Asian hominins in the late Middle Pleistocene. Maba 1 currently cannot be definitely classified in any known hominin taxon.'
