Jumping off The Shark: Winners and losers in WQAM takeover of indie-rock station 104.3-FM

Yahooa day ago
South Florida traffic just got even more frustrating for fans of indie rock as 104.3 The Shark has transitioned into the new FM home of 560 WQAM sports-talk radio.
Station owner Audacy said the abrupt change — which came Thursday afternoon as The Shark was playing Alice In Chains' 'Man in the Box' — was in response to listener demands.
The Shark, based in Miramar, was the least popular of Audacy's five music stations, ranking No. 20 among all metro-Miami radio stations in Nielsen rankings released in July. WQAM was No. 27.
The new WQAM outlet, with call letters WQAM-FM subject to FCC approval, offers a simulcast of programming heard on the original 560 AM station via a stronger, 100,000-watt FM signal, a boon to local sports fans long irritated by balky AM reception.
WQAM is home to Miami Heat, Florida Panthers and Miami Hurricanes games, along with sports talk (Miami Dolphins-heavy) on 'The Joe Rose Show,' 'Tobin & Leroy' and 'Hochman, Crowder & Solana.' Dolphins' radio broadcasts can be heard on iHeartRadio's BIG 105.9-FM and Fox Sports WINZ 940-AM (and WIOD 610-AM when there is a conflict with the Miami Marlins).
A statement from Audacy regional president Claudia Menegus said South Florida sports fans' 'unrivaled passion' was deserving of 'a destination that matches their energy.'
Michael McCullough, chief marketing officer of the Miami Heat, said the expanded FM signal 'will bring even more fans, listeners, and a younger, more diverse audience' to Heat broadcasts.
The move came about three weeks before the Miami Hurricanes open their season with a nationally televised game against Notre Dame at Hard Rock Stadium on Aug. 31. The Dolphins begin their season on Sept. 7 at the Indianapolis Colts.

While sports fans rejoice over a stronger radio signal for games and related banter, alternative-music lovers have lost another provider of songs by the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana and Green Day. Some may turn to BIG 105.9-FM, where music from these bands can be found in a playlist dominated by classic rock hits.
Another over-the-air alternative is WKPX 88.5-FM, a noncommercial, educational radio station operated by Broward County Public Schools. It features a diverse mix of music — Pixies, Pearl Jam, Pet Shop Boys — but at 3,000 watts is difficult to get once you cross the Broward County line.
An Instagram post from one fan of The Shark said: 'For many of us, it wasn't just a station — it was a rare place to listen to alternative music we couldn't find anywhere else. The lack of notice or communication has left us loyal listeners feeling blindsided and unheard.'
Of course, most fans of alternative music get their fix by streaming songs on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other sources.
It remains to be seen what effect the death of South Florida's major alternative-music radio station will have on touring decisions of musicians heard on The Shark. Already geographically challenging, is the region now philosophically undesirable, too?
This move comes less than a year after Audacy quietly canceled the 2024 Riptide Music Festival, the two-day, indie-music gathering it had organized since 2016 on Fort Lauderdale beach.
The 2023 Riptide Music Festival that took place that December featured a strong lineup that included headliners The Black Keys and Jelly Roll, joined by Dirty Heads, Sublime with Rome, Awolnation, Silversun Pickups and others.
The cancellation of Riptide 2024 came as Audacy was emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a process completed in January. No word yet from Audacy on any plans to resurrect Riptide, but it would seem even more unlikely with the demise of The Shark, which promoted Riptide heavily.

John Daly's son among winners in first round of US Amateur at Olympic Club

SAN FRANCISCO -- The son of two-time major champion John Daly was among 32 players who won their matches Wednesday in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur, where five of the top 10 amateurs in the world also advanced at The Olympic Club. John Daly II, a senior-to-be at Arkansas, had a scorecard that looked nothing like the 'wild thing' reputation of his famous father. In a 1-up victory over Cooper Claycomb, Daly won the 11th hole with a birdie and the other 17 holes were halved. Jackson Koivun of Auburn, the No. 1 player in the world amateur ranking, was all square with Ryan Vools until Koivun made par on the 16th for a 1-up lead and closed out his opponent with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 17th. It was Koivun's only birdie of the match. Ben James, the No. 2 amateur in the world and a Virginia senior, had a 2-and-1 victory over Parker Claxton, while fourth-ranked Preston Stout won, 4 and 3, over Pennson Badgett. Two players from the top 10 lost in extra holes. Tommy Morrison of Texas (No. 6) , lost to 18-year-old Mason Howell when Morrison made bogey on the par-5 17th hole with a 1-up lead, and then made double bogey on the 19th hole. Filip Jakubcik (No. 5) lost to Eric Lee in 19 holes. Other top-10 players from the amateur ranking to advance were Jace Summy (No. 7) and Christiaan Maas (No. 9). Tim Wiedenmeyer of Germany staged the biggest comeback. He lost five of the opening seven holes to Reed Greyserman and won his final four holes for a 2-and-1 victory. In one of the most roller-coaster matches of the opening round, the son of a former British golf writer rallied to beat the son of a Ryder Cup stalwart. Niall Shiels Donegan of Scotland, whose father Lawrence was a longtime golf correspondent for The Guardian, birdied the last two holes for a 1-up victory over Luke Poulter, a junior at Florida and the son of Ian Poulter. Donegan was among 17 players who advanced from a 20-man playoff Wednesday morning to determine the final 64 for match play. ___

Rays earn first road series win over Athletics in three years with 8-2 win

Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit two-run home runs, Drew Rasmussen threw six innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics 8-2 on Wednesday night. Lowe's second-inning home run off J.T. Ginn (2-5) — his 24th of the season — made it 6-0. Caminero homered in the ninth. Rasmussen (10-5) reached double-digit wins for the second time in his career, but saw his AL-best scoreless streak end at 17 1/3 innings when Lawrence Butler hit a two-run homer in the third. It was the first extra-base hit allowed by Rasmussen in his last four starts. Caminero, Josh Lowe, and Jake Mangum each had RBIs in the top of the first, and Mangum scored on a throwing error. Ginn allowed six hits and six runs — five earned — in two innings. Lowe's two-run homer to left center extended the Rays' lead. The Rays won their first road series against the A's since May 2-4, 2022, at the Oakland Coliseum. Both teams are off Thursday. The Athletics host the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, with RHP Jack Perkins (1-2, 4.08) to to start opposite Los Angeles LHP Yusei Kikuchi (6-7, 3.37). The Rays are at San Francisco on Friday night. RHP Joe Boyle (1-2, 3.82) was set to face Giants RHP Landen Roup (7-6, 3.11).

Panthers want to hear 1 thing from Taylor Swift's ‘New Heights' appearance

The post Panthers want to hear 1 thing from Taylor Swift's 'New Heights' appearance appeared first on ClutchPoints. The entire galaxy will be completely surreal on Wednesday, with birds flapping in the distance, extinct flowers suddenly blooming, and rainbows appearing from every horizon. Because Taylor Swift will appear on the 'New Heights' podcast—and the Florida Panthers are all for it. Swift's boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and his brother, former NFL star Jason Kelce, announced on Monday that the pop icon will join their podcast. Fans have long been waiting for the life-changing, cataclysmic, and watershed event that obviously rivals the creation of man. Even the Panthers are eager for the latest episode of 'New Heights.' A fan said the 35-year-old Swift should talk about a very specific experience. 'If Taylor is on 'New Heights,' I need her to talk about the Panthers game she went to,' said the fan. The Panthers reposted it and agreed: 'For real.' Swift and Kelce attended Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers at Amerant Bank Arena in South Florida. The award-winning singer-songwriter was even spotted cheering for Carolina from a suite. The Panthers, however, lost in overtime, 5-4, as the Oilers tied the series at 2-2. Carolina eventually claimed the crown in Game 6. Swift and Kelce have been very public about their relationship, and watching the Panthers in action was another example. Going to sports events has become a regular date for the celebrity couple. They went to the US Open last year, and of course, Swift has been a fixture at Arrowhead Stadium to cheer for the Chiefs. Before the reveal on Monday, Kelce had been teasing Swift's appearance on 'New Heights,' making Swifties as giddy as a 14-year-old watching the 'Eras Tour.' Now, it's finally happening. 'We're about to do a f****** podcast!' said the 'Cruel Summer' singer in the announcement video. Truly, the Earth is healing.
