Local talent on full display at YSU Football Spring Game
Watch the video above for highlights from today's game and to hear from head coach Doug Phillips and quarterback Beau Brungard.
The scoring began when former Niles star and sophomore running back Antuan Gardner plunged his way into the end zone.
'You know, this spring, this a fun time. I said it's time to go out and entertain, we want to make plays today,' head coach Doug Phillips said. 'We've worked hard to really work on that discipline and consistency, and we got to continue to do that because in our league, that's what wins and loses games.'
Later, Beau Brungard would connect with Slippery Rock transfer and Farrell native Kylon Wilson on a 90-yard touchdown. Wilson finished the day with three catches for 148 yards and a touchdown.
'I'm happy with our offense and how far we've come, starting from the ground up, all new terminology, all new plays, all that. I'm really proud of the guys and how they took the extra time to get in the facility, watch extra film and just learn the playbook from the ground up,' Brungard said. 'I'm happy with how far we've come. We're not there yet by any means, but I'm happy with how far we've come.'
Brungard, a three-time Big 22 Player of the Year at Springfield, would add another touchdown pass to Luke Hensley right before halftime.
'I saw our kids grow throughout spring. I saw them get better. I saw them get stronger and we're not done yet. We got to continue to work May, June and July,' Phillips said.
Although the red team would go on to win, the defense won a tiebreaker after the game to be crowned the Spring Champions.

Nebraska volleyball ranked No. 1 in AVCA preseason poll
The first poll of the 2025 collegiate volleyball season has been released, and the Cornhuskers are on top. Nebraska ranks No. 1 in the country in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division I women's volleyball preseason poll. The Huskers received 40 of the 61 first-place votes while No. 2 Penn State had the other 21 votes. Pittsburgh ranks No. 3, with Louisville No. 4 and Texas rounding out the top five. The last time the Huskers were ranked as a preseason No. 1 was in 2022. Nebraska was last ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Poll on Nov. 27, 2023. Nebraska finished 33-3 last season, ending the year in the NCAA semifinals. Now, the team is entering a new era following the retirement of John Cook, with head coach Dani Busboom Kelly at the helm. For the Big Ten this season, the Huskers rank No. 1 in the preseason rankings. Three Nebraska volleyball players were named to an award watch list late last month. Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly were named to the AVCA Player of the Year watch list. Nebraska will begin the 2025 season on Friday, August 22, when the Huskers host No. 3 Pittsburgh at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Cowboys open SLC early
The Cowboys' quest for a historic third straight Southland Conference championship will begin early and a long way from home this upcoming season. McNeese State will travel to San Antonio for the league opener on Monday, December 1, against Incarnate Word. Some consider the Cardinals a dark horse in the league race. It will be the first conference game coached by Bill Armstrong, who replaces Will Wade on the Cowboy bench. Wade went 58-11 with McNeese over two seasons, leading the school to back-to-back titles and NCAA Tournament berths for the first time. 'The standard has been set here, and that's to win championships,' said Armstrong. 'That is our goal.' Only three players return from both those championship teams: senior guards Javohn Garcia and DJ Richards, and junior guard T'Johnn Brown. Garcia was the Southland's Player of the Year last season, while Richards started most games a season ago. 'We want to win it a third time,' Richards. 'We aren't done.' McNeese still has one more game left on its overall schedule to sign. The Southland released its league schedules Wednesday, a day after it was learned the Cowboys will be heading back to play Michigan on Dec. 29 to end 2025, as first reported by the American Press. 'We have some irons in the fire,' said Armstrong. 'I think we are close to being done with our schedule. I hope we are.' After the league opener, McNeese will play a pair of home games against Northwestern State (Dec. 5) and East Texas A&M (Dec. 12). That will be part of a stretch where the Cowboys will be in the Legacy Center for six of seven conference contests. The Cowboys are 23-0 the last two years on their home floor against SLC competition. They are also 40-2 overall against the league, losing just once in each of the previous two seasons. Their only road game during that home run will be at Houston Christian on Dec. 15. McNeese will play rival Lamar, whom they beat in the SLC championship game last season, for the first time on Jan. 3 to start 2026. That will start four straight games in Lake Charles, which will be followed by five of six on the road. 'I think those home games give us an opportunity to get off to a good start in the league,' said Armstrong. 'We still have to win them, though.' The Cowboys will finish the regular season on the road at Nicholls on March 2. A week later, they will host the Southland Conference Championships with the hopes of a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in the making. 'Making the tournament is what's expected with this program now,' said Armstrong.

Iowa football: Three breakout candidates for 2025 season
Like every other sport, college football is a team game. You could argue that more than any other sport, college football requires an entire team to contribute to succeed. And that's most definitely the case for the Iowa football team entering the 2025 season. The Hawkeyes have many well-known and established stars on their 2025 roster. From preseason All-Americans like Logan Jones and Gennings Dunker to fan-favorites like Kaden Wetjen and Rhys Dakin. All of those players will be critical to Iowa's success this season. But, they can't do it alone. They'll need the rest of the roster to step up and match their level. This includes players who may be flying under the radar right now, just waiting to break out. Who exactly are those players for the Hawkeyes in 2025? Let's take a look at three breakout candidates for Iowa football this season. Reece Vander Zee Iowa fans have been waiting a long time for a star wide receiver to break out. The last wide receiver to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a season was Marvin McNutt back in 2011. The Hawkeyes have had great receivers like Matt VandeBerg, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, and Brandon Smith since then, but none of them have passed that 1,000-yard mark. I think Vander Zee could do that at some point during his Iowa career. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound sophomore made some splash plays as a true freshman last season, catching 14 balls for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He only played in nine games due to injury and played with a rotating carousel of middling quarterbacks. Vander Zee has the size and speed to be a matchup nightmare on the outside, and another year in Tim Lester's West Coast system should help. Add in some better and more consistent quarterback play, and I think Vander Zee could be in for a huge 2025 season. Maybe not 1,000 receiving yards this season, but I think he'll establish himself as a great wide receiver with the potential to reach that mark in the coming years. Derek Weisskopf Derek Weisskopf was a stud in high school. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound redshirt freshman linebacker was an Adidas All-American at Williamsburg High School. As a senior, he was the Gazette's Co-Player of the Year and District MVP, as well as being invited to the Shrine Bowl. Weisskopf was a four-star signee in Iowa's 2024 class, the 197th-best prospect in the country and the top recruit in Iowa's class. Weisskopf's resume certainly speaks for itself, but that's not the biggest reason why I'm predicting him to break out in 2025. The linebacking room is thin entering this season following the departures of Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson. While Weisskopf is listed as a backup to Jaxon Rexroth right now, there will be an open battle for playing time. And I think Weisskopf could be on the field more than many fans might expect. With that additional playing time, don't be surprised if Weisskopf shows why he was so highly touted coming out of high school. I think Hawkeye fans have their next great linebacker on the roster in Weisskopf, and he'll get to show off his talent this fall. Zach Lutmer If you asked me the player I'm most confident in to break out this season, my answer would be Zach Lutmer. The 6-foot, 205-pound sophomore safety impressed a ton on special teams last season and will now get the chance for an increased role on defense. Lutmer had 14 tackles last season and snagged his first career interception against UCLA. And I think the sky is the limit for Lutmer. Lutmer is currently projected as the backup to Koen Entringer (who I think will have a great season), with senior Xaver Nwankpa on the other side. I think Lutmer will be hard to keep off the field, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of three-safety sets in 2025 with Lutmer, Entringer, and Nwankpa on the field at the same time. I think Lutmer has the mindset, physical traits, and knowledge of the game to be a great safety at Iowa. I'm predicting a breakout for Lutmer and for him to be the Nwankpa replacement in 2026. The coaches think highly of him, his teammates respect him, and I think many Iowa fans will learn Lutmer's name in 2025.
