Nebraska make top list for four-star Missouri athlete

Yahoo24-05-2025
Nebraska football made the top seven this week for 2027 four-star athlete Jacob Eberhart. He made the announcement on social media.
Eberhart is the 211th overall player nationally, the fourth overall player in the state of Missouri, and the sixth overall player at his position per Rivals rankings. Alabama, Illinois, LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Oregon also made his top group in addition to Nebraska.

On the Nebraska front, he has taken one unofficial visit to Lincoln. That came on November 2. Since then, he has also taken visits to Ohio State, Miami, and USC.
Currently, the 2026 Nebraska football recruiting class has four commitments overall. That puts them 57th overall in the country per Rivals rankings. Jase Reynolds was the most recent commitment for the program, doing so at the beginning of May.
Eberhart is certainly an intriguing prospect, as he can play both sides of the football. He measures six feet one inch, weighs 210 pounds, and can play at a high level at the safety position. The Nebraska coaching staff seems to like versatile athletes, and Eberthart would give them a player to develop and work with.

Blue Jays 5, Cubs 1: Kyle Tucker shows some fire

If you think you are frustrated with the Cubs' performance of late, consider what Kyle Tucker did after he grounded out with two runners on base in the seventh inning of the Cubs' 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays: The thing about that scene is that Tucker is generally one of the calmest, most collected Cubs. He almost never shows emotion on the field. That ought to tell you where the Cubs' mindset is right about now. As has been the case for so many recent losses, this game wasn't terrible. Cubs pitching was pretty good, just not quite good enough. The Cubs had plenty of baserunners — left 10 on base, and left the bases loaded twice — but simply could not get a key hit at the right time, going 1-for-9 with RISP. The Jays scored first, on three singles in the first inning. Javier Assad pitched out of trouble after that, and also got himself out of a jam in the second inning thanks to this throw by Ian Happ [VIDEO]. View Link The Cubs got the first two men on base in the third. Dansby Swanson singled and stole second and Matt Shaw walked, but the next two Cubs were routine outs. Tucker walked to load the bases, but Carson Kelly struck out to end the inning. Assad made it through the bottom of the third without trouble, but his high-wire act failed in the fourth. He allowed a leadoff single to Daulton Varsho, then hit Ty France with a pitch. Ernie Clement followed with a three-run homer and, well, with the Cubs offense in the funk that it is in, the game was essentially over at that point. Assad wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible either apart from the home run. What are you going to do? The Cubs managed a run in the seventh off old friend Tommy Nance. (How is it that the Cubs keep letting go relievers who can't pitch in Chicago and they become solid contributors elsewhere? Nance entered this game with an ERA of 0.77 in 10 appearances.) Swanson led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Willi Castro. Michael Busch's single scored Swanson [VIDEO]. View Link With the score 4-1, you might have thought, 'Hey, the Cubs could still get back into this game,' and indeed, dear reader, they tried. Another former Cub turned into a leverage reliever, Brendon Little, entered the game after Nance struck out Seiya Suzuki. There was only one out at the time, but Tucker grounded out. That's the scene you see at the top of this recap. Kelly then walked to load the bases. Pete Crow-Armstrong was the next hitter, chance to be a hero, etc. You could have predicted this [VIDEO]. View Link That, as they say, was that. Ben Brown threw pretty well in relief of Assad, four innings with just four hits and one run allowed, a solo homer by Varsho in the eighth. Here are PCA and Swanson talking about the current Cubs offensive woes [VIDEO]. View Link And here are Craig Counsell's postgame comments [VIDEO]. View Link Forget about the NL Central title, that possibility is basically gone. Somehow, the Cubs have managed to hold on to the top wild-card spot despite losing six of their last nine. And if you think things are bad here, consider the Dodgers, who just got caught for the NL West lead by the Padres. The Dodgers were 56-32 and had a nine-game lead in their division entering the action on July 4. Since then they are 12-20 — only one game better than the Rockies over that span. (The Cubs are 15-16 over that stretch.) So could it be worse? Yes, it could be worse. Fact about Tuesday's loss from BCB's JohnW53: Tuesday's loss was the 10th in a row by the Cubs in the first game of a series on the road. Since winning at Washington June 3, they have lost openers at Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Houston, Minnesota, New York vs. the Yankees, South Side vs. the White Sox, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Toronto. This is their longest such streak since at least 2000, when they lost 10 in a row. I don't think I need to remind you how awful the Cubs season was in 2000. This year's Cubs still can turn things around, but doing that rightfreakingnow would be a good idea. Cade Horton will start for the Cubs in the second game of the series in Toronto tonight. Kevin Gausman goes for the Blue Jays. Game time is again 6:07 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

LSU football pushing to flip five-star quarterback from SEC powerhouse

LSU football isn't giving up on the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the class of 2026. Per Rivals' Marcus Benjamin, LSU is still making its case to Texas commit Dia Bell. "They've always been there," Bell said of LSU. "I've always had a great relationship with Coach Sloan. He's still chipping away, trying to get me to come out, but I have not made any plans to visit LSU at this point," Bell said. According to the Rivals' Industry Rankings, Bell is the No. 4-ranked player in the country and No. 1-ranked quarterback. He's the top recruit in the state of Florida. Bell committed to Texas in June of 2024, and that pledge has held firm. The odds are stacked against the Tigers on this one, but Brian Kelly, Sloan, and staff aren't ready to throw in the towel. LSU is without a quarterback in its 2026 class after missing on top targets, including Bowe Bentley and Bryson Beaver. According to 247Sports, LSU's 2026 class ranks No. 8 in the country. LSU has secured commitments from two five-stars, wide receiver Tristen Keys and defensive tackle Lamar Brown, but the addition of Bell could launch LSU's class to another level. The Tigers remain in contention for the No. 1-ranked class in the country.

What could go wrong? The Athletic looks at Alabama football's worst-case scenario in 2025

The Alabama Crimson Tide are breaking in a new quarterback heading into the 2025 college football season Maybe "new" isn't the first word that comes to mind for Ty Simpson, the redshirt junior and former five-star recruit who was officially named Alabama's starter on Monday. Simpson has been with the program since 2022, but his next snap under center will be his first as a starter after backing up Jalen Milroe for two seasons. In recent years, Alabama has had a fairly good run of success when it comes to first-year starting quarterbacks. Milroe's first full season, which included a bizarre Week 3 benching in the Crimson Tide's ugly 17-3 win at South Florida, saw him lead Alabama to 10 straight wins, an SEC championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Young's first season under center in 2021 saw him win the Heisman Trophy and guide Alabama to the SEC title and a berth in the national championship game against Georgia. A year earlier, Mac Jones led a blistering Crimson Tide offense to a perfect 13-0 season and the program's sixth title under Nick Saban. And Tua Tagovailoa became a star even before his first start in 2018 after leading Alabama to a thrilling overtime win over Georgia for the national championship eight months earlier. He won his first 14 starts and guided Alabama to a fourth straight national championship game (the Tide were routed by Clemson, 44-16, in that one). If we go all the way back to 2009, Greg McElroy, A.J. McCarron, Blake Sims, Jake Coker and Jalen Hurts all did fairly well for themselves in their first year as starting quarterbacks. McElroy, McCarron and Coker won national titles, and Hurts finished as runner-up to Deshaun Watson and Clemson. Now that Simpson has officially been named Alabama's starter for its season opener at Florida State on Aug. 30, veteran college football reporter Ralph Russo of The Athletic has a question: What could go wrong? Russo took a look at every team (subscription required) ranked in the top 25 of Monday's preseason AP poll and outlined the worst-case scenario for each one in 2025. For No. 8 Alabama, he brought back an old adage when it comes to quarterback competitions. "If the old saying about having multiple quarterbacks means you have none, Kalen DeBoer's second season in Tuscaloosa could be similar to his first," Russo stated. There are never any guarantees with first-year starting quarterbacks, but with Simpson beating out five-star freshman Keelon Russell and sophomore Austin Mack to start Week 1, I'm willing to trust DeBoer and the head coach's longtime offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. If Alabama's recent past with first-year starters under center is any indication, and DeBoer and Grubb are able to replicate their success from Washington with a different passer they helped improve (Michael Penix), the Crimson Tide are as well-equipped as any team when it comes to breaking in a new quarterback.
