Two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber returns to Cleveland as Guardians special assistant
CLEVELAND (AP) — The only two-time Cy Young Award winner in franchise history has returned to the Cleveland Guardians.
Corey Kluber was hired as a special assistant for pitching Wednesday, rejoining the organization that he played for from 2011-2019 as part of a 13-year career in the majors. He also spent one season apiece with the Rangers, Yankees, Rays and Red Sox.
Kluber compiled a 98-58 record and a 3.16 ERA with 1,461 strikeouts for Cleveland, ranking second in team history with a .628 winning percentage. The right-hander retired prior to the 2024 season with a 116-77 overall mark, a 3.44 ERA and 1,725 strikeouts over 1,641 2/3 innings.
A three-time All-Star with Cleveland, Kluber won the American League Cy Young Award in 2014 and 2017. He started three games for the then-Indians in the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. He went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six postseason starts.
The Cy Young Award was first handed out in 1956, the same year Cleveland great Bob Feller retired from baseball.

In 2019 he was 14-7 with a 3.25 ERA and threw three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win in Game 7 of the World Series against the Astros. The Rangers put two runners on in the sixth, but Soroka escaped the jam when Marcus Semien flied out. Texas has lost nine of its past 10 road games overall. It has dropped six straight road series openers. Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (5-2, 2.34 ERA), who has allowed two runs or fewer in nine consecutive starts, opposes left-hander Mitchell Parker (4-5, 4.71 ERA) in the middle game of the series on Saturday. ___

Guardians' ace Bieber will not throw for 7 days after setback in comeback from Tommy John surgery
CLEVELAND -- Guardians ace Shane Bieber will not throw for seven days and will have his right elbow rechecked next week after experiencing soreness during a bullpen session on Tuesday. Bieber met with team doctors and consulted with specialist Dr. Keith Meister on Friday. The right-hander was scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday before the setback. The seven-day shutdown started on Wednesday. He will be rechecked on June 13 before deciding the next steps. Experiencing soreness during rehab is not uncommon. Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2024. He began his rehab Saturday by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five. Bieber pitched 12 scoreless innings in two starts last season, was limited to 21 starts in 2023 due to elbow issues and 16 starts in 2021 because of a shoulder strain. He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026. Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 136 appearances since debuting with the Guardians in 2018, when he was 11-5 with a 4.55 ERA.

Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut
CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of baseball's top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher singled, walked twice and scored in a 7-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in his major league debut. Advertisement Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own.
