Delhi HC stays EFIs proposed Extraordinary General Meeting on Sunday
EFI Secretary General Col Jaiveer Singh had on August 2 issued a notice for the EOGM on August 17 but the Rajasthan Equestrian Association (REA) approached the court for a stay.
The Court on Friday stayed the EOGM, saying, 'There appeared to be no rationale to further confound the uneasy state of affairs in EFI by convening an EOGM" and set October 13, 2025 as the next date of hearing.
The agenda items including nomination of an interim president, finalise the 2025 calendar, approval of selection trials for FEI Asian Championship and set the selection criteria for 2025 Youth Asian Games, 2026 Asian Games, and approval of payments.
Among other issues to be discussed were reason behind the creation of a separate e-mail ID for the organisation and acceptance of membership applications.
'We had approached a few days. Col Jaiveer wanted to have a few decisions passed. He wants to run the EFI as a one-man show. There are bogus clubs as members, through which he can get passed any decision," REA President Raghuvendra Singh Dundlod told PTI from London.
'It needs to be seen if the clubs are genuine or not. There are four genuine and major army units — ASC, RVC, 61 Cavalry, and the President's Body Guard. If they come through the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB)they will be welcome as per the NSDC 2011.
'But the bogus clubs need to go before the fresh election. That is the only way forward. The elections have to conducted under the Sports Code," he added.
It may be mentioned that the Sports Ministry had in November 2021 exempted EFI from following two key provisions of the Sports Code including having at least two-thirds of the states and union territories as members.
'These exemption have also been challenged in the court," said Dundlod. Col. Jaiveer Singh said they are considering challenging the court decision.
'It's not a correct judgement. It is against the members. There are important decision to take. We have to finalise the calendar and until we do that events can't be held. The athletes will suffer. We are contemplating next course of action," Col. Jaiveer told PTI.
The Equestrian Federation of India's Executive Committee (EC) was reinstated by a Delhi High Court order on May 29, 2024, which overturned a previous appointment of an Ad-Hoc Committee.
This decision restored the control of the EFI's affairs to the democratically elected 2019 Executive Committee.
The Court-appointed observer SY Quraishi recently mentioned in his report to the court that the endless bickering among the executive committee members was eroding the goodwill of the sports body.
The Delhi High Court had entrusted former Chief Election Commissioner Quraishi with the task of overseeing the functioning of EFI while responding to a petition from REA in November 2019. PTI AT AT KHS KHS

The Maharashtra tehsildar was suspended after a video of him singing a Bollywood song at his office went viral. (This is an AI generated representational image). (Grok) What does the video show? The tehsildar, Prashant Thorat, was recorded singing 'Yara Teri Yari Ko,' a hit track from the1981 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Yaarana. A video of the moment showed Thorat singing the song with those around him clapping. The footage also captured a board behind Thorat with the words 'taluka magistrate' written on it. Slammed on social media: On July 30, he was transferred to Renapur in neighbouring Latur from Umri in the Nanded district. Since both areas are in the same division, he took charge of his new posting the same day. Thorat sang the song at his send-off party, which was organised on August 8 in Umri. The video of the farewell, once shared on the internet, didn't sit well with social media users. Many slammed Thorat, claiming that singing songs while sitting in the official chair is inappropriate and undermines the seriousness of his position. What happened next? In light of the controversy, the Nanded collector shared a report with the higher authorities about the matter. It stated that Thorat's conduct had tarnished the administration's image and violated the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1979. According to an official, Divisional Commissioner of Revenue Jitendra Papalkar acted on the report and ordered Thorat's suspension. (With inputs from PTI)

Sensex, Nifty on course for best day in months: What led to stock market rally today?
The stock market soared on Monday, driven by the promise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to overhaul the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, making a range of essentials and electronics cheaper and triggering a wave of buying across sectors. PM Modi last week announced what he termed as a massive 'Diwali gift' for the people of the country, promising reforms in the GST regime.(PTI) The benchmark Nifty 50 jumped 1.51 per cent to 25,003.90, while the BSE Sensex climbed 1.34 per cent to 81,682.61, setting up both indices for their best sessions in months, according to figures mentioned in a Reuters report. If gains hold, Nifty is on course for its best day in three months while the Sensex was on track for its best session in two months. Broader indices also joined the rally, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks rising 1.5 per cent and 1.3 per cent, respectively. What triggered stock market rally? Modi's GST reform promise In his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Friday, PM Modi announced what he termed as a massive 'Diwali gift' for the people of the country, promising reforms in the GST regime. The stock market rally of Monday follows the above-mentioned announcement of sweeping tax reforms, including the simplification of GST slabs into a two-rate structure of five per cent and 18 per cent, scrapping the 12 per cent and 28 per cent rates currently applied to various goods. The changes are set to take effect from October, the Diwali month. The new structure is expected to make daily essentials, small cars, and electronics more affordable, boosting consumer demand and potentially fueling stronger corporate earnings by FY27. 'Lower rates should boost overall demand and improve the fiscal year 2027 earnings outlook,' Reuters quoted Citi Research as saying in a note. Auto, consumer stocks lead charge Automobile and consumer stocks led sectoral gains on Monday, with the auto index jumping 4.5 per cent and consumer shares gaining 2 per cent. Reports citing sources have said that the government has proposed cutting GST on small cars to 18 per cent from 28 per cent, providing a direct boost to the sector. From the Sensex firms, Maruti, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Trent and Bajaj Finserv were among the major gainers. Larsen & Toubro, ITC, HCL Technologies and Infosys were the laggards. "There are strong tailwinds for the market with potential to take it higher. Declarations by the prime minister on the next major reforms in GST by Diwali are a big positive. S&P upgrading India's sovereign credit rating is another major positive," PTI news agency quoted VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist, Geojit Investments Limited. Financial heavyweights gained ground, rising 1.8 per cent, after S&P upgraded ratings for top lenders HDFC Bank and State Bank of India, citing improving credit metrics and stable economic outlook. Oil slips as geopolitical risks ease Meanwhile, global oil prices eased after the US chose not to impose new sanctions on Russian oil exports following a high-stakes meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Saturday. The meeting, aimed at moving toward a Ukraine ceasefire, was seen by markets as a de-escalation signal, calming energy price volatility.

Asia Cup: Gill mystery continues as selectors spoilt for choice
New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) How to fit in a brilliant batter like Shubman Gill in a well-oiled T20 set up will be the biggest challenge for India's national selection committee when it gathers on Tuesday to pick the 15-member squad for next month'sAsia Cup in UAE. As of now, the prolific Test captain, who had a dream run in England recently, is not organically fitting into the side which will play the continental showpiece from September 9 to 28. For Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues, the major point of deliberation will be how to fix something that doesn't need to be mended. It's a 'scary" conundrum for the selectors but Indian cricket right now is a T20 talent factory with at least 30 players who are ready to come into the national squad with three to four options available for one slot. For the top three positions, there are six cricketers of similar pedigree available. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been phenomenal in national colours through last season but then the ones who are equally good, if not better, happen to be Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan (the IPL Orange Cap winner). In bowling, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi are jostling for one slot. And the craftiest of them all Yuzvendra Chahal has been ignored for longest time. But then selectors can pick only 15 and those in decision-making positions of T20 team have an interesting perspective. One important member of team management feels that it would be unfair on anyone who has been a first XI regular during the past season to be deprived to accommodate a bigger brand name or star. The other school of thought is that Indian cricket works well with one all-format captain who also becomes the biggest marketing brand — in this case Gill, who is an obvious choice for a lot of stakeholders going forward. But then to assume this will happen smoothly is oversimplification of the issue. Under Suryakumar Yadav's able leadership, the Indian T20 squad has a phenomenal 85 per cent record, winning 17 of its last 20 games. None of these games featured Gill and Jaiswal. But there's a catch too. Before Gill and Jaiswal became busy with Test commitments in the past one year, they were playing T20 Internationals s and were doing well including impressive IPLs. Gill was in fact vice captain to Surya before he had to forego T20Is due to Tests. Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals skipper, became Surya's deputy and performed decently even though he is not considered a long-term leadership candidate. However, Axar will certainly feel shortchanged if Gill supercedes him as Surya's deputy. On Tuesday, if selectors pick Gill in the 15, then they have to play him in the eleven which means one among Sanju, Abhishek or Tilak will have to compromise their batting slots. To include Shubman in the 15could also means dropping Rinku Singh. The big-hitter hasn't done much in head coach Gautam Gambhir's era either for Kolkata Knight Riders or India. In Gambhir's book there's nothing called a designated finisher. So choices won't be easy. Choice of pacers =========== With Hardik Pandya being as good a frontline pacer as one can get and Jasprit Bumrah along with Arshdeep Singh being automatic choices in the line-up, there are three options for the reserve seamer's slot. Harshit Rana looks the favourite as both Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj are being considered red-ball specialists. With hoem series against the West Indies starting October 2, it is understood that Bumrah might not be required against the relatively weak visitors side as Prasidh and Siraj will be fresh and raring to go. Choice of spinners ============ Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are first three choices and Gambhir's affinity for all-rounders is likely to ensure Washington Sundar in the side. The pitches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi won't be as worn out and slow as they were during the Champions Trophy but there is reasonable help for spin bowlers. Finishers and Keeper-batter ================== Nitish Kumar Reddy and Rishabh Pant are yet to recover from their respective injuries. As a result, Shivam Dube will be the second seam bowling all-rounder after Pandya. top videos View all The second keeper's slot is a fight between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jitesh played some good knocks as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL-winning campaign and is more suited for a lower-order role.
