Dermatologist shares how to pick moisturiser based on where you live and your skin type for best results

Hindustan Times01-05-2025
Dr Danny Guo, a dermatologist took to Instagram on April 17 to share a video on how to pick a moisturiser that suits you best. He said in the video that by considering your skin type, climate, and specific skin concerns, you can choose a moisturiser that provides the right amount of hydration and protection for your skin. From gels that are lightweight, non-greasy, and perfect for oily skin or humid climates to ointments, which are thicker and more occlusive, often used for severely dry skin or skin conditions like eczema, Dr Gua shared different product types and when to use them.
Dr Gua said, 'First, we need to understand the six thickness categories of moisturisers – water-based, gels, lotions, creams, balms and ointments – going from the lightest to the thickest. In general, the thicker it is, the lower the water content, but the more it prevents water loss from your skin. Contrary to popular belief, having more water in the formulation does not lead to more skin hydration. Moisturisers work by improving the skin barrier and preventing water loss because the majority of the water in your skin comes from your blood and not from the environment.'

Dr Gua added, 'So, we will number the lightest type, water-based, no. 1 and the thickest type, ointment, no. 6. Try to follow along.'
He said:
⦿ If you have dry, sensitive skin, pick 4 ( creams) or 5 (balms).
⦿ If you have oily skin, pick 2 (gels) or 3 (lotions).
⦿ If you live in a hot area, drop your number by 1.
⦿ If you live in a cold area, increase your number by 1.
⦿ If you live in an area with hard water, increase your number by 1.
⦿ If you are using a retinoid, increase your number by 1.
⦿ If you have eczema, increase your number by 1.
He wrote in his caption, 'Skincare is nuanced but not difficult. If you learn the reasoning behind why dermatologists recommend certain things, then you should be able to make those informed choices as well, so let's start with how to choose a moisturiser.'

Tired Of Waxing? Future Humans May Not Have Body Hair! List Of Body Parts That Are 'Disappearing'

Last Updated: Future humans could see a world without body hair, wisdom teeth and other quirky features as evolution gradually phases them out over thousands of years. If the thought of waxing your body hair makes you groan, there's good news for future generations. Humans may not need to worry about it at all. According to an Instagram Reel by content creator Sam Beres, several body parts are gradually disappearing from the human population, and humans may be next in line for some evolutionary surprises. 'Here are some body parts that are disappearing, so enjoy them while they last," Beres says, highlighting just how much our anatomy is changing over time. One of the most familiar examples is wisdom teeth. These third molars are vanishing worldwide, with 35% of people born today missing them entirely. 'This is because our jaws are becoming smaller due to changes in diet. Full disappearance will happen within 10 to 20,000 years," Beres says. Body hair, long considered essential for warmth and camouflage, is also slowly fading. 'We're expected to lose that in about 20,000 years," Beres notes, meaning future humans might be permanently smooth-skinned. Tiny toes are also shrinking with each generation, and male nipples, of which only 0.0001% can lactate. 'Both are expected to leave us in about 100,000 years," he says. Small, quirky features are disappearing too. Darwin's point, which is a little fold on the top of the ear found in about 10% of people, is likely to be gone in around 100,000 years. Meanwhile, the palmaris longus muscle in the forearm, once used for climbing trees, is missing in 65% of Indians today and absent in 15% of people globally, suggesting it may vanish soon. Here's the clip: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sam Beres (@sambucha) Evolution is relentless, and these changes remind us that our bodies are always adapting. While it might be sad to say goodbye to these features, the reel leaves one message clear, that is to enjoy them while they last. So, the next time you gripe about waxing or stubby little toes, remember that future humans may not have to deal with these at all. Skip Melatonin, Nutritionist Recommends These 7 Foods And Drinks For Better Sleep

We have all been there: lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, while our minds refuse to switch off. A restless night leaves you feeling tired, drains your energy, makes you irritable and affects your focus the next day. Over time, lack of sleep can also impact your mood, memory, and overall health. Nutritionist Lovneet Batra suggests a simple solution before turning to melatonin supplements: focus on sleep-friendly foods. These foods naturally calm your nervous system, balance hormones, and support deep, restorative sleep. In a post on Instagram, she has highlighted seven powerful bedtime foods and drinks that can help you relax and improve sleep quality, making restless nights less frequent. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovneet Batra (@lovneetb) The first is pumpkin seeds, which are loaded with magnesium and tryptophan. She mentioned, "Magnesium boosts GABA (your brain's calming chemical), while tryptophan turns into serotonin and indirectly supports melatonin production." So, it calms nerves and supports serotonin. Another food is banana which is rich in B6, potassium and tryptophan. Ms Batra stated that bananas relax muscles, regulate your nervous system, and help your brain convert tryptophan into serotonin (your sleep-starter) and helps you fall asleep. Another magnesium-rich option is almonds. They lower cortisol, the stress hormone and promotes muscle relaxation for uninterrupted sleep. For drinks, Ms Batra recommended chamomile tea, which contains apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to calming receptors in the brain, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation before bed. Another recommended drink is valerian root tea, whose compounds, like valerenic acid, help enhance GABA activity and shorten the time it takes to fall asleep. She further mentioned that having tart cherries is also a good bedtime food, as it is low in melatonin but rich in polyphenols and tryptophan, which helps in serotonin production and reducing oxidative stress, a hidden sleep disruptor. The next powerful, according to Ms Batra is golden almond milk, turmeric and Cardamom. She said, "Turmeric's curcumin reduces inflammation and stabilizes mood, while cardamom soothes digestion and calms the nervous system," adding, "Perfect night-time comfort drink." Ms Batra also suggested beverages like the cinnamon coconut refresher, which helps balance T3 hormone levels while hydrating, and the nigella pomegranate cooler, which boosts T3 and lowers antibodies. She explained that these foods and drinks were chosen because they naturally prepare the body for sleep by calming stress hormones, improving serotonin pathways, and supporting your gut-brain connection.

Serena Williams Reveals She Lost 14 kg Using Weight-Loss Medication: "I Feel Great"

Serena Williams has opened up about her weight loss journey, revealing she lost 31 pounds (14 kg) with the help of a weight loss drug. The 23-time Grand Slam champion started using a GLP-1 medication after her second child, as part of a paid partnership with healthcare company Ro. Williams didn't specify which GLP-1 medication she's taking, but shared that she initially used it inconsistently before becoming fully committed to the treatment. She's been working with Ro to normalise the use of weight loss medications and break down stigmas surrounding them. According to Williams, the medication has not only helped her lose weight but also improved her overall health, with noticeable enhancements in her blood sugar levels and reduced joint pain. "I feel great. I feel really good and healthy. I feel light physically and light mentally," she told People. She also shared a video on Instagram, explaining the reasons behind her decision. "Taking care of yourself isn't a weakness, it's a power. I've never been about shortcuts, not in my career, and not in my health. I'm on a GLP-1 because it was the right tool to help me feel healthy," she wrote. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) The 43-year-old tennis star attributed the start of her weight struggles to 2017, following the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia, which was delivered via emergency C-section. She admitted that she was struggling to lose weight post-pregnancy, despite trying various methods such as intense workouts. She had also tried various diets, including vegan and vegetarian options, and a high-protein diet, as well as exercising regularly, often reaching 20,000 steps per day. "A misconception is that it's a shortcut. As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn't get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place — and believe me, I don't take shortcuts," she told Today. "As a woman, you go through different cycles in your life. … No matter what I did — running, walking, I would walk for hours because they say that's good, I literally was playing a professional sport — and I could never go back to where I needed to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just got even harder. So, then I was like, OK, I have to try something different," she added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ro (@ Williams reported no side effects from the weight loss medication injections. She's now considering staying on the medication long-term, feeling like her body has found balance again. Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, Reddit's co-founder, have two daughters: 7-year-old Olympia and 2-year-old Adira. Notably, Ohanian is an investor in Ro, the healthcare company Williams partners with for her weight loss treatment. How do GLP-1 drugs work? GLP-1 drugs work by mimicking a natural hormone released after eating, leading to reduced appetite, feeling full faster, and slowed stomach emptying. These effects facilitate weight loss and also make the medications useful for treating diabetes by triggering insulin release. Typically, GLP-1 medications are prescribed for obesity or diabetes, often in conjunction with recommended lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
