Swiss hiker airlifted from Indonesia's Mount Rinjani after serious fall
Benedikt Emmenegger was descending the Pelawangan trail towards Segara Anak lake on Wednesday when the accident occurred, according to the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR).
"Rescue teams sprang into action after the incident was reported at 11.25am local time," said BTNGR head Yarman in a statement.
A joint operation involving park officials, medical personnel, the Rinjani Squad, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), forest rangers, and volunteers was quickly mobilised.
Yarman explained that emergency responders coordinated with the Mataram Basarnas and Bali Air, which was contacted through the hiker's insurance, to arrange a helicopter evacuation.
Emmenegger was evacuated from the site at 4.58pm and flown to a hospital in Kuta, Bali.
A preliminary medical report stated that he sustained fractures to his thigh and arm, along with bleeding near the eye.
"Safety is our top priority," Yarman said, thanking all involved for their swift and professional response.
Mount Rinjani has come under renewed scrutiny following a series of recent incidents, including the death of 26-year-old Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, who was found in June after falling into a ravine.
In May, 57-year-old Malaysian climber Rennie Abdul Ghani died in a separate fall, while another Malaysian trekker was injured in late June.
Authorities have advised hikers to exercise caution, while the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has urged the use of certified guides and licensed trekking operators. – BERNAMA

Brazilian judge places ex-president Bolsonaro under house arrest
BRASÍLIA: A Brazilian judge on Monday placed former president Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest for breaking a social media ban, escalating a dramatic standoff between the court and the far-right politician accused of plotting a coup. Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, is on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly plotting to cling onto power after losing the 2022 elections to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Raid reveals work permit violations
BUKIT MERTAJAM: An Indonesian domestic worker was among 12 foreign women detained by the Immigration Department during a raid on an entertainment centre here. Its Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said checks revealed that the woman held a valid permit to work as a maid but had violated the terms by working as a guest relations officer (GRO) at night. He said further inspection showed that some of the women who were employed in factories, had overstayed their permits, and several did not possess any identification documents. 'In the operation at 1.30am yesterday, the women – three Indonesians, seven Thais and two Vietnamese – aged between 20 and 35, were found entertaining customers,' he told reporters, Bernama reported. According to him, several of the women tried to escape through the back door but were swiftly detained. Investigations found that all 12 women had been working at the premises for about six months, and were paid between RM150 and RM250 per hour. The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
