Swiss hiker airlifted from Indonesia's Mount Rinjani after serious fall
Benedikt Emmenegger was descending the Pelawangan trail towards Segara Anak lake on Wednesday when the accident occurred, according to the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR).
"Rescue teams sprang into action after the incident was reported at 11.25am local time," said BTNGR head Yarman in a statement.
A joint operation involving park officials, medical personnel, the Rinjani Squad, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), forest rangers, and volunteers was quickly mobilised.
Yarman explained that emergency responders coordinated with the Mataram Basarnas and Bali Air, which was contacted through the hiker's insurance, to arrange a helicopter evacuation.
Emmenegger was evacuated from the site at 4.58pm and flown to a hospital in Kuta, Bali.
A preliminary medical report stated that he sustained fractures to his thigh and arm, along with bleeding near the eye.
"Safety is our top priority," Yarman said, thanking all involved for their swift and professional response.
Mount Rinjani has come under renewed scrutiny following a series of recent incidents, including the death of 26-year-old Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, who was found in June after falling into a ravine.
In May, 57-year-old Malaysian climber Rennie Abdul Ghani died in a separate fall, while another Malaysian trekker was injured in late June.
Authorities have advised hikers to exercise caution, while the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has urged the use of certified guides and licensed trekking operators. – BERNAMA

Content creator claims homeless prank was staged, issues apology
FOLLOWING intense public criticism, one of the Malaysian content creators involved in the controversial homeless man prank has come forward with clarifications and an apology. The creator @aluk_77 took to Instagram, yesterday, to address the widespread backlash, asserting that the viral video showing them giving chicken bones to a homeless individual was not genuine exploitation but rather a staged scenario. According to his explanation, the homeless man had consented to participate in the filming beforehand, with both parties agreeing to the scripted nature of the content. The creator emphasised that the man was not actually left with only food scraps. To support his claims, he shared additional footage showing the homeless individual receiving what appeared to be a complete meal consisting of rice and two pieces of fried chicken, which the man accepted gratefully. 'Please give us a better chance to give back to society. We will do more good deeds later, to help the homeless,' the content creator stated in his Instagram response. He concluded his clarification with a direct apology to viewers: 'I'm really sorry, everyone.' The explanation comes after the original video sparked widespread condemnation from Malaysian social media users, who criticised the creators for what they perceived as cruel and insensitive treatment of a vulnerable individual. READ ALSO: Malaysian content creators face backlash for homeless prank The controversial Instagram post by users @aluk_777, @olympiccc_555, and @kaijie_666, which has since been removed, documented their visit to a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet where they consumed their meals before deciding to 'donate' their leftover bones. In the video, the trio justified their actions by stating they didn't want to waste food, proceeding to pack the chicken bones with pre-packed KFC rice before approaching a sleeping homeless individual on a walkway. The footage shows the homeless man initially appearing grateful upon receiving what he believed was a meal, only to discover the contents were merely food scraps. Despite the humiliating situation, the man accepted the leftovers and thanked the creators.

Brazilian judge places ex-president Bolsonaro under house arrest
BRASÍLIA: A Brazilian judge on Monday placed former president Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest for breaking a social media ban, escalating a dramatic standoff between the court and the far-right politician accused of plotting a coup. Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, is on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly plotting to cling onto power after losing the 2022 elections to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Last month, he was ordered to wear an ankle bracelet and barred from using social media after being accused of trying to disrupt the trial with fiery speeches shared online by his sons and allies. Under the ban, third parties are barred from sharing his public remarks. On Sunday, allies of Bolsonaro, 70, defied the court order by broadcasting a live call between the former army captain and his son at a solidarity rally in Rio de Janeiro, one of several held across Brazil. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes reacted furiously, declaring Monday that the judiciary would not allow a defendant to "treat it like a fool" because of his "political and economic power." Criticising Bolsonaro's "repeated failure" to comply with the court's restrictions, he ordered him placed under house arrest at his home in the capital BRASÍLIA. He also barred the country's former leader (2019–2022) from receiving visitors, apart from his lawyers, and from using any mobile phones. The new measures were expected to be met with fury in Washington. Last week, Trump already imposed massive tariffs on Brazil and sanctioned Moraes for what he termed his "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro. Trump's pressure campaign, including 50 per cent tariffs on a raft of Brazilian goods, including coffee, has endeared him to Bolsonaro's conservative base. At Sunday's rallies, some demonstrators waved US flags or held signs reading "Thank you Trump." Bolsonaro himself did not attend the rallies, having been ordered by the Supreme Court to stay home at night and at weekends throughout the trial. He faces a heavy prison sentence in the trial, which is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks. The crusading Moraes has become a figure of hate on the Brazilian and American right for taking the fight to the far right. He has repeatedly clashed with Bolsonaro as well as X owner Elon Musk, whom he accuses of failing to fight disinformation.

Raid reveals work permit violations
BUKIT MERTAJAM: An Indonesian domestic worker was among 12 foreign women detained by the Immigration Department during a raid on an entertainment centre here. Its Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said checks revealed that the woman held a valid permit to work as a maid but had violated the terms by working as a guest relations officer (GRO) at night. He said further inspection showed that some of the women who were employed in factories, had overstayed their permits, and several did not possess any identification documents. 'In the operation at 1.30am yesterday, the women – three Indonesians, seven Thais and two Vietnamese – aged between 20 and 35, were found entertaining customers,' he told reporters, Bernama reported. According to him, several of the women tried to escape through the back door but were swiftly detained. Investigations found that all 12 women had been working at the premises for about six months, and were paid between RM150 and RM250 per hour. The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
