Dragon Boat Festival: Hong Kong set for 3.2 million cross-border trips

About 3.2 million trips are expected to be made across Hong Kong's borders during the Tuen Ng Festival long weekend, with a peak of about 540,000 arrivals at land crossings on Sunday.
The Immigration Department said on Thursday that most of the cross-border traffic would pass through land checkpoints from neighbouring Macau and Shenzhen, accounting for 85 per cent, or 2.73 million, of the trips.
Hong Kong will be hosting citywide dragon boat races over the weekend, with authorities anticipating a peak of 570,000 outbound trips on Saturday and 540,000 inbound ones on Sunday.
The department said the Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line and Shenzhen Bay control points were set to be busy, forecasting daily averages of about 230,000, 200,000 and 140,000 trips, respectively.
The holiday, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, runs from Saturday to Monday on the mainland this year.
'To avoid congestion and longer-than-usual waiting times for immigration clearance, the Immigration Department advises all land boundary passengers to plan in advance, avoid making their journeys during busy periods, and keep track of radio and TV broadcasts on traffic conditions at various control points,' a department spokesman said.

Former in-laws of slain Hong Kong model Abby Choi ‘didn't pay a penny' for children

The mother of slain Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung has claimed her former in-laws' family 'didn't pay a penny' towards her two grandchildren's living expenses, while alleging the model's ex-mother-in-law took up to HK$80 million (US$10.2 million) from the deceased for investment. Testifying for the prosecution, Cheung Yin-fa on Monday recalled her encounters with Jenny Li Sui-heung, who is being tried in the District Court trial for allegedly obstructing a police investigation into her son, Alex Kwong Kong-chi, who was Choi's ex-husband, after the model went missing on February 21, 2023. Li has denied the charge. Parts of her dismembered body were found in a three-storey village house in Tai Po's Lung Mei Tsuen village on February 24 of that year. She was 28. The 30-year-old Alex Kwong, his 67-year-old father Kwong Kau and 34-year-old brother Anthony Kwong Kong-kit are awaiting a murder trial behind bars. Li, 65, was charged with perverting the course of justice for allegedly urging Alex Kwong to abscond, knowing he was wanted by police for a 2015 theft case involving HK$6.3 million in gold and jewellery. The prosecution also accused Li of misleading the theft investigation and asking Cheung to remain silent if interviewed by detectives.

Macau's Galaxy boss: hotel shortage ‘must be addressed' with Hengqin Island policy

A shortage of hotel rooms is hindering Macau 's growth, and further policy breakthroughs to facilitate the development of nearby Hengqin Island – three times the size of Macau – are needed to solve the problem, according to the chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group 'As Macau shifts towards a more mass-market and event-focused model, the question of hotel rooms must be addressed,' said Francis Lui Yiu-tung in a briefing with Hong Kong reporters on Monday. With visitor arrivals growing, demand for hotel accommodations would continue to increase, and there was an urgent need for Macau to address the issue, he said. Macau had about 45,000 rooms and welcomed 35 million visitors last year. In comparison, Las Vegas has about 160,000 hotel rooms for 40 million annual visitors. According to Galaxy's estimates, Macau needs at least 15,000 more hotel rooms, especially mid-priced ones with daily rates below HK$1,000. Lui said policy breakthroughs to promote the development of nearby Hengqin Island would increase hotel capacity and help Macau's economic diversification. Mid-priced hotels in Hengqin would allow visitors to stay there but come to Macau for conventions, concerts and gaming, he said.

The new prices will take effect on June 10, but residents can purchase tickets at the original rate until August 31 by presenting an identity card or birth certificate.
