46th Asean Summit key platform for boosting regional cooperation, says PMO
KUALA LUMPUR: The 46th Asean Summit, which runs for two days beginning Monday (May 26), serves as the main platform for Asean leaders to review the region's progress in its three key pillars -- political-security, economic and socio-cultural.
The Malaysian Prime Minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the summit is also a key forum for discussing increasingly complex regional and global issues, including the South China Sea dispute, the humanitarian crises in Gaza and Myanmar, unilateral trade tariffs by major powers, the challenges of the digital economy and supply chain resilience.
"The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has consistently emphasised that under this year's Asean Chairmanship, Malaysia bears a significant responsibility in shaping a stronger, and more inclusive and resilient Asean Community.
"Malaysia's main focus is to ensure that Asean remains relevant, responsive and people-centred, in line with the Asean 2045 long-term vision that will be launched,' he said.
He was speaking at a Prime Minister's Office (PMO) briefing held in conjunction with the 46th Asean Summit, which was broadcast live on the Anwar Ibrahim and PMO Malaysia Facebook pages today.
In addition to the summit with Asean member states, Tunku Nashrul said Malaysia will also host the 2nd Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit, both scheduled to take place tomorrow and chaired by Malaysia as the Asean 2025 Chair.
He said the Asean-GCC Summit will review the implementation of the Asean-GCC Framework of Cooperation 2024-2028, which includes initiatives in free trade, education, sustainable development, and cultural and digital connectivity.
"The second Asean-GCC Summit also reaffirms the long-term commitment between the two regions, which have maintained relations since 1990.
"Asean and the GCC are two significant economic blocs, with total trade reaching US$130.7bil and GCC investments in Asean amounting to US$390.2mil," he said.
Touching on the agenda for the first day of the 46th Asean Summit, Tunku Nashrul said today's sessions feature a series of key meetings involving the Prime Minister, Asean leaders and representatives from various sectors. - Bernama

Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Xi tells Trump they need to 'correct course' of US-China ties
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump that the two should "correct the course" of bilateral relations, in a Thursday phone call reported by state media. The talks took place at Trump's request, the Xinhua news agency said without elaborating, and come as Washington and Beijing clash over areas such as trade and student visas. Xi told Trump that "to correct the course of the big ship of China-US ties, it is necessary for both sides to set the right direction, and eliminate all kinds of disruptions, even sabotage, which is especially important", according to Xinhua. The call follows officials from the world's two biggest economies accusing each other of jeopardising a trade war truce agreed last month in Geneva. "The US side should take a realistic view of the progress made and withdraw its negative initiatives against China," Xi told Trump according to a readout from state broadcaster CCTV. He said the Geneva talks showed that "dialogue and cooperation are the only right choice", and insisted China had abided by the agreements made in Switzerland. But the Chinese president warned Trump that Washington should tread carefully over the issue of self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory. "Xi emphasised that the United States should handle the Taiwan issue carefully to avoid a small number of 'Taiwan independence' separatists dragging China and the United States into a dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation," CCTV said. The Chinese leader's comments come after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Beijing's military was "rehearsing for the real deal" and preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan. - AFP
