Rod Stewart set for Abu Dhabi return before world tour retirement

The National16-04-2025
Rod Stewart will return to Abu Dhabi for his first UAE concert in eight years. The legendary British singer, 80, will perform at the Etihad Arena on December 17. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member will perform hits from his six-decade career, including Maggie May, Forever Young, and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You. Stewart announced his retirement from major global tours in November, although he does not plan step away entirely. 'This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire. I love what I do, and I do what I love,' he said on X. The singer will also perform in the legends slot at England's Glastonbury Festival in June. His 33rd album, Swing Fever, hit number one on the UK charts in 2024. Organised by Live Nation Middle East, the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi and Miral, the concert will be Stewart's second in Abu Dhabi after his performance in 2017. The National's Saeed Saeed wrote in his review at the time: 'With Rockin' Rod, it always comes down to that voice. That winning combination of full-throttled roar and raspy whisper served him well. It allowed his five-decade career to encompass various styles ranging from pop, rock and folk to his relatively recent foray into the great American songbook.' Presale tickets will be available through Stewart's website on Thursday, April 17 at 8am, with another presale starting at noon through Live Nation Middle East, before a general sale on Friday.

Terence Stamp, who portrayed General Zod in Superman, dies at 87

Tributes are being paid to British actor Terence Stamp, who has died at the age of 87. Stamp will be remembered for playing the role of a villain, including that of General Zod in the early Superman films, and for a successful 60-year career in show business. His death on Sunday prompted a wave of tributes from fans and those close to him within the industry, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). Stamp started his film career with seafaring Billy Budd in 1962, for which he earned Oscar and BAFTA award nominations. Highlights of his career include his portrayal of the transsexual Bernadette in 1994 film The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the second of his two BAFTA nominations. Edgar Wright, who directed Stamp in his final feature film, Last Night in Soho (2021) remembered the actor as 'kind, funny, and endlessly fascinating'. Bill Duke, who starred with Stamp in director Steven Soderbergh's 1999 crime drama The Limey ' said he was 'deeply saddened' to hear of his death. 'He brought a rare intensity to the screen, but off-screen he carried himself with warmth, grace and generosity,' he said. Born in the East End of London in 1938, Stamp rose to acting fame in the 1960s after he won a drama school scholarship.

Gordon Ramsay Academy to make its international debut in Saudi Arabia

Academies are set to open across the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia's dining scene has been on a roll lately, attracting some of London's most celebrated names. The likes of Gymkhana, Zuma, and others have been delighting diners. Now, something a little different is crossing over from the United Kingdom. The Kingdom is all set to welcome the very first international branch of the Gordon Ramsay Academy. The Gordon Ramsay Academy will make its international debut in Riyadh. Scheduled to open before the end of the year, it will occupy a prime spot at the upcoming Narjis View Mall. This new outpost marks Gordon Ramsay's third academy worldwide. The Riyadh academy will offer a wide range of culinary courses and diplomas for all skill levels. From beginners who've never picked up a knife to seasoned cooks, there is something for everyone. Expect hands-on classes covering everything from British classics to Asian favourites, along with dedicated training in bakery and confectionery. The move to establish the Gordon Ramsay Academy here comes at a time when Saudi Arabia's interest in gastronomy is soaring. With more people eager to explore professional cooking, baking, and pâtisserie — and with the growing demand for homegrown talent in the Kingdom — the academy's arrival feels perfectly timed. Partnering with Saudi Arabia's education and training leader, Alkhaleej Training and Education, there will also be openings in Jeddah and Al Khobar. The Gordon Ramsay Academy is backed by Gordon Ramsay himself — one of the world's most recognisable culinary figures. A renowned restaurateur and TV personality, he has built an empire of restaurants across the globe. From mentoring contestants on MasterChef to publishing bestselling cookbooks, he has earned a reputation within the culinary world and beyond. The Gordon Ramsay Academy in Saudi Arabia will soon welcome its inaugural students.
