Train derailed near Bletchley during journey to rail depot

BBC News10-07-2025
Investigators are to look into an incident in which a broken-down train derailed on its way to a depot. The out-of-service London Northwestern train derailed at Denbigh Hall South Junction shortly after leaving Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, at about 12:27 BST on 26 June.A recovery process meant some lines running through the junction were out of use until 16:05 BST on 29 June.Initial findings by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) reveal the train encountered a fault preventing it from departing southwards from platform 4 at Bletchley station.
The train still worked even driven northwards but a fail machine blocked the normal signalled route north, investigators say.Because of this, the train was instructed to travel in the wrong direction on the southbound line - without the usual protection from the signalling system. It had been travelling at about 15mph when the front bogie derailed on a switch diamond crossing. There were no passengers on the service or any reported injuries to the four members of staff on board. The RAIB said it would publish its full findings and any recommendations to improve safety once the investigation was completed.

DEAR CAROLINE: I'm concerned about my grandson, who was taken out of school aged five to be home-schooled.

Q I am deeply concerned about my grandson who is ten. He was taken out of school by his parents aged five due to being bullied. His mother decided she wanted to home-school him. After a short time he grew tired of this and wouldn't concentrate or listen. During lockdown she gave up teaching him, taking him skateboarding instead. I was so relieved when his younger brother started school (without problems) but I'm upset with their reluctance to sort my eldest grandchild's education. His mother claimed he had ADHD but now says he doesn't, and, worst of all, she now works part-time to fund her expensive tastes, leaving him alone for large parts of the day. His father works away during the week, and I work full time so I can't help during the day.

Plane lands in cornfield near Cromer after hitting turbulence

A plane landed in a cornfield after hitting turbulence, an investigation found. On 10 June 2024, an Aeroprakt A32 Vixxen, G-RASP, had been flying from Nottingham City Airport to Northrepps Airfield in Cromer, Norfolk, when it encountered difficult conditions while passing over trees. An investigation led by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) found the aircraft had experienced turbulence, and despite the pilot trying to correct its path, it started to rapidly descend. The plane had been carrying a 69-year-old pilot and passenger who were able to evacuate from the plane and were left with minor injuries. The aircraft was left with substantial damage to the airframe and propeller. The pilot said he had landed "many times" at the airfield in Cromer before; however, despite applying power and rudder to correct the disturbance, he was unable to stop it from landing heavily on its nosewheel. While he could have diverted to an airfield with a longer and more "in-to-wind" runway, he was concerned that any damage to the nose leg would make the plane collapse on touchdown, leading to unpredictable consequences. While the aircraft was fitted with a ballistic parachute recovery system, he was unwilling to use it due to an unknown outcome. Due to the passenger becoming distressed, the pilot said he conducted an immediate precautionary landing on the "softest soil and springiest crop" that he could find and turned the fuel and battery master off before touchdown. The pilot said that landing as slow as possible in the cornfield had achieved a "more predictable" and safer outcome than diverting or using the parachute system.
