BAM boss inspires Justin and Co before US Open challenge
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's singles ace Justin Hoh and his compatriots received a timely morale boost from BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ahead of the US Open, which starts on Tuesday in Iowa.
Tengku Zafrul, who is also the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, is currently on a working visit in Washington DC and took the opportunity to encourage the Malaysian contingent taking part in the Super 300 event.
World No. 42 Justin will be joined at the US and Canada Opens (July 1-7) by men's singles Eogene Ewe (world No. 101) and women's singles K. Letshanaa (No. 50) and Wong Ling Ching (No. 99) — all making their debut appearances at both tournaments.
Tengku Zafrul revealed via social media that fans had asked him to lend support to the BAM players competing in the United States.
"I've received requests from fans to observe and support the BAM players who are competing at the US Open in Iowa," he posted on Instagram.
"If it were nearby, I'd definitely be there to cheer them on, but the distance from Washington to Iowa is nearly 1,900km.
"To Justin, Eogene, Letshanaa and Ling Ching — do your best and make us proud."
Justin will be aiming to surpass his best result of the year — a quarter-final showing at the Taiwan Open — but faces stiff competition in Iowa.
The tournament is headlined by world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan, the recent runner-up at the Super 1000 Indonesia Open.
Justin is expected to clear the opening hurdle against world No. 61 Julien Carraggi of Belgium, but could face a tricky second-round tie against India's world No. 58 S. Sankar Muthusamy, followed by a potential quarter-final clash with world No. 12 Kenta Nishimoto of Japan.
Eogene opens his campaign in the qualifying round against India's Darshan Pujari on Tuesday.
In the women's singles, Letshanaa faces a tough first-round draw against 2017 world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, while Ling Ching takes on American No. 110 Isabelle Rusli in the qualifying round.

Top umpires aplenty, BAM boss tells curious netizen
KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton fans, take note. Malaysia do have international umpires, and BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has the numbers to prove it. In a short and snappy video posted on his social media, Tengku Zafrul responded to a curious netizen who wondered why no Malaysian officials seemed to feature on the global stage. "I don't see any international badminton umpires from Malaysia although we are a top four badminton country. Does anyone have answers?" Tajuddin wrote on X. Tengku Zafrul, who is known for his data-driven approach, quickly stepped in with the facts. "It's not true that there are no Malaysian umpires on the international stage," he said. "There are several levels to umpiring, and we have representatives across them." Tengku Zafrul outlined the hierarchy of umpiring qualifications — from BAM-accredited (BAM-A) and BAM-certified (BAM-C) officials at the local level, to those certified by Badminton Asia (BA-A and BA-C) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF-C and BWF-A) for international duties. "At the moment, we have 670 BAM-A umpires, who are eligible to officiate at state and national level. "BAM-C is the minimum level needed to umpire in international events hosted by BAM — we have 57 at this level. "But to officiate abroad, you need to be accredited by Badminton Asia or the BWF," he explained. Tengku Zafrul then rattled off Malaysia's current tally: seven umpires with Badminton Asia-A status, three with Asia-C, and one each with the highly coveted BWF-A and BWF-C certifications, bringing the total to 12 international umpires. "Compared to the big boys, we're doing well," he added. "China have 15, Indonesia 14, Malaysia 12, Japan 9 and Korea 7." Zafrul admitted that moving up the ranks isn't easy. "As the levels increase, the difficulty of getting accreditation rises, which is why we only have two at the BWF level."

JDT sign Jon Irazabal from Azerbaijani club Sabah FK
PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have bolstered their backline by signing Malaysian international Jon Irazabal. The 28-year-old from Bilbao, Spain, with Malaysian heritage through his grandparents, joins the 11-time Super League champions from Azerbaijani club Sabah FK. 'There's only one ultimate destination in Malaysia - JDT. Welcome, Jon Irazábal!' said the statement from the club. Irazabal recently made his debut for Malaysia when he helped Harimau Malaya thrash Vietnam 4-0 at the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. Besides Irazabal, the other signings made by the Southern Tigers are Spanish centreback Antonio Glauder, Brazilian striker Jairo Da Silva and defensive midfielder Ibrahim Manusi.
