Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China revealed on Wednesday that Iraq continued to be China's fourth-largest oil supplier in the first half of 2025.
According to China's General Administration of Customs, Iraq's oil exports to China during the first half of 2025 reached 32.78 million tons, approximately 239.3 million barrels, marking a four percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, when Iraqi oil exports to China amounted to 31.51 million tons, or 230.023 million barrels, Shafaq News reported.
Iraq ranked fourth among the major countries exporting oil to China, trailing only Russia (49.11 million tons), Saudi Arabia (38.95 million tons), and Malaysia (38.43 million tons).
In 2024, Iraq exported an average of 1.19 million barrels of oil per day to China, according to data issued by the US Institute for Energy Research (IER).
The Chinese Ambassador to Iraq, Cui Wei, revealed in mid-January that the volume of trade exchange between Iraq and China reached $50 billion in 2024.
The Chinese diplomat also indicated that cooperation between China and Iraq is not limited to one field but rather includes energy, electricity, transportation, communications, school projects, and other fields.

Syria's shadow rulers reshape economy

Shafaq News - Damascus In the weeks after Damascus fell to Syria's rebels, a leading businessman got a late-night call to come see 'the sheikh.' The address was familiar, a building where periodic shakedowns of businessmen like him occurred under Bashar al-Assad's economic empire. But there were new bosses in town. With a long, dark beard and a pistol on his waist, the sheikh gave only a fighter's pseudonym, Abu Mariam. Now the leader of a committee reshaping Syria's economy, he asked questions in courteous Arabic with a slight Australian twang. 'He asked me about my work, how much money we made,' the businessman said. 'I just kept looking at the gun.' A Reuters investigation has found that Syria's new leadership is secretly restructuring an economy broken by corruption and years of sanctions against Assad's government, under the auspices of a group of men whose identities have until now been concealed under pseudonyms. The committee's mission: decipher the legacy of the Assad-era economy, then decide what to restructure and what to retain.

Fires erupt across Iraq, hitting a company and school

Shafaq News – Nineveh/Dhi Qar/Al-Anbar A massive fire tore through a commercial company dealing in electrical and construction materials in Nineveh province on Friday, causing financial losses exceeding 300 million Iraqi dinars, according to a security source. Preliminary investigations indicate the fire was sparked by an electrical short circuit. The source added that residents and the al-Shamal municipality were able to extinguish the flames, as civil defense teams were notably absent from the scene. In Dhi Qar province, authorities reported a second school fire on the same day. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, according to a local security official. Meanwhile, in al-Anbar province, emergency crews contained a restaurant fire caused by another electrical short circuit. No injuries were reported. The incident marks the fourth unexplained fire in Fallujah and Ramadi this week. Although there have been no casualties, the fires have resulted in considerable property damage. These latest incidents come in the wake of Iraq's deadliest fire in years, a hypermarket blaze in Kut that claimed over 60 lives.

Iraq offers incentives for solar energy

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq has introduced a low-interest loan program to support the installation of solar panels, part of a wider national effort to cut emissions and reduce the burden on its overstretched electricity grid. Launched in partnership with Region Trade Bank (RTB) and backed by financing from the Central Bank of Iraq, the scheme is open to both residential and commercial users. Loans range from 7 million to 30 million Iraqi dinars ($4,800–$20,700), with repayment periods of up to seven years and an optional six-month grace period. 'This initiative opens a practical path for Iraqis to adopt clean energy solutions and take part in building a more resilient and sustainable economy,' said Ahmed Nowzad, RT Bank CEO, cautioning that applications can be submitted through the government's official portal. While Iraq remains one of the world's largest oil producers, it continues to face persistent electricity shortages—particularly during the summer, when temperatures often surpass 50°C and power demand surges. Iraqi authorities have recently identified solar power as a practical tool to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
