Transport minister: Asean rail link vital to weather global supply shocks
PUTRAJAYA, April 22 — The Malaysia-Thailand rail connectivity to the Asian continent, including China, is important in terms of supply chain security and safety, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
He said the development of rail infrastructure is important from a regional perspective, not just domestically, with the aim of connecting Asean member countries through a more strategic railway network.
'When we can connect via rail between these countries, first of all, it is regional connectivity and also very important in terms of supply chain security because the world today is experiencing various uncertainties and disruptions,' he said.
He told the media after the monthly assembly of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Raikan Kasih Madani 2025 event, here today.
Loke said Malaysia, which is located in the middle of the strategic route of the Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea, has the advantage of being a link between western and eastern countries.
Therefore, he said the region should make full use of existing railways to improve connectivity.
'We hope that at the Asean level there is a consensus so that we can improve this connectivity. When we have improved this connectivity, of course other countries will also be interested, especially landlocked countries,' he said.
To realise the Pan-Asian Railway Network, Loke said Malaysia is committed to achieving a policy with Thailand that is more supportive of the development of the rail sector.
Loke said he would meet with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit on May 2 to resolve several issues, including Malaysia's rail cargo services being able to cross borders and become a major mode in the future.
He said, for example, among the existing obstacles were certain restrictions on the movement of goods by rail between Malaysia and Thailand, where there were categories of goods that were not allowed to be transported by rail across borders.
'Things like this must be resolved so that we can reduce these barriers to enhance trade in Asean.'
Loke said Malaysia is the host of the Asean summit next month and the main agenda is to steer the region in facing the current challenges.
'The most important challenge at this time is that the increase in tariffs by the United States has made the global economy increasingly tense.
'What is important for Asean is to ensure that availability or the level of competitiveness remains high and to ensure that trade within Asean can be improved so that we can reduce trade dependence on only one market,' he said.
Therefore, Loke said MOT plays a major role in ensuring that trade between Asean can be improved through the implementation of policy instruments so that democratic red tape and restrictions within Asean can be reduced.
Loke said cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand is established through Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and State Railway of Thailand (SRT) but what is important is government-to-government (G2G) cooperation.
The Pan-Asian Railway Network is also known as the Kunming-Singapore Railway Network, connecting the city of Kunming in China with Singapore, via several South-east Asian countries.
It is a mega project that connects South-east Asia with China and then to the European continent.
Malaysia plays a key role in the Pan-Asian Railway Network, particularly through the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Project which connects the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. — Bernama

Earlier today, Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Mahathir's new platform is nothing more than part of a repeated cycle of failed political experiments. He said Malay politics cannot be built on nostalgic rhetoric and repeated attempts to form new, loosely structured coalitions without a clear struggle or foundation. Besides Tuan Ibrahim, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin were also present at Mahathir's announcement for the new grouping yesterday. Mahathir said the formation of the new Malay alliance is aimed at 'restoring Malay power' in government. He said the coalition, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a formal political party for now but serves as an umbrella platform to protect the political and economic future of the Malay community. He also invited individual Umno members to join the coalition — but not the party as a whole. This marks Mahathir's latest effort to unite the Malays through a political platform, following previous initiatives such as Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Pejuang, ahead of the 15th general election (GE15). However, all candidates linked to GTA were defeated in GE15, including Mahathir himself, who lost his deposit and failed to retain his Langkawi seat. GTA, launched in 2022, was effectively dissolved a year later when Mahathir, its chairman, admitted the movement was not effective at gaining voter support.

(TNB pic) PETALING JAYA : Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has dismissed a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule on WhatsApp as fake, urging the public not to fall for any misinformation. In a statement today, TNB clarified that the schedule, which bears the TNB logo and claims of a tariff hike, is fake and was not issued by the company. 'The false schedule misleadingly suggests a tariff increase that features the TNB logo,' it said. 'The circulation of such false information is creating unnecessary confusion among customers.' TNB stressed that as of today, no official announcement has been made regarding any changes to electricity tariffs affecting consumers. The company also reminded the public to be responsible with the content they share online. 'We strongly advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information,' it said. For accurate and updated information, TNB urged consumers to refer only to official government and TNB platforms for any updates on electricity tariffs. Last December, TNB proposed a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), for implementation from July 1, 2025. The base tariff under RP3 had been set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof then said no decision had been made on the new tariff as the government was still finalising the matter. Fadillah is also the energy transition and water transformation minister.

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.
